The VEP Booster: A Closed-Loop AI System for Visual EEG Biomarker Auto-generation

Junwen Luo, Chengyong Jiang, Qingyuan Chen et al. · cmu, tsinghua

Effective visual brain-machine interfaces (BMI) is based on reliable and stable EEG biomarkers. However, traditional adaptive filter-based approaches may suffer from individual variations in EEG signals, while deep neural network-based approaches may be hindered by the non-stationarity of EEG signals caused by biomarker attenuation and background oscillations. To address these challenges, we propose the Visual Evoked Potential Booster (VEP Booster), a novel closed-loop AI framework that generates reliable and stable EEG biomarkers under visual stimulation protocols. Our system leverages an image generator to refine stimulus images based on real-time feedback from human EEG signals, generating visual stimuli tailored to the preferences of primary visual cortex (V1) neurons and enabling effective targeting of neurons most responsive to stimuli. We validated our approach by implementing a system and employing steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) visual protocols in five human subjects. Our results show significant enhancements in the reliability and utility of EEG biomarkers for all individuals, with the largest improvement in SSVEP response being 105%, the smallest being 28%, and the average increase being 76.5%. These promising results have implications for both clinical and technological applications

ContiFormer: Continuous-Time Transformer for Irregular Time Series Modeling

Yuqi Chen, Kan Ren, Yansen Wang et al. · cmu, tsinghua

Modeling continuous-time dynamics on irregular time series is critical to account for data evolution and correlations that occur continuously. Traditional methods including recurrent neural networks or Transformer models leverage inductive bias via powerful neural architectures to capture complex patterns. However, due to their discrete characteristic, they have limitations in generalizing to continuous-time data paradigms. Though neural ordinary differential equations (Neural ODEs) and their variants have shown promising results in dealing with irregular time series, they often fail to capture the intricate correlations within these sequences. It is challenging yet demanding to concurrently model the relationship between input data points and capture the dynamic changes of the continuous-time system. To tackle this problem, we propose ContiFormer that extends the relation modeling of vanilla Transformer to the continuous-time domain, which explicitly incorporates the modeling abilities of continuous dynamics of Neural ODEs with the attention mechanism of Transformers. We mathematically characterize the expressive power of ContiFormer and illustrate that, by curated designs of function hypothesis, many Transformer variants specialized in irregular time series modeling can be covered as a special case of ContiFormer. A wide range of experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets have illustrated the superior modeling capacities and prediction performance of ContiFormer on irregular time series data. LLM-based Privacy Data Augmentation Guided by Knowledge Distillation with a Distribution Tutor for Medical Text Classification

Yiping Song, Juhua Zhang, Zhiliang Tian et al.

As sufficient data are not always publically accessible for model training, researchers exploit limited data with advanced learning algorithms or expand the dataset via data augmentation (DA). Conducting DA in private domain requires private protection approaches (i.e. anonymization and perturbation), but those methods cannot provide protection guarantees. Differential privacy (DP) learning methods theoretically bound the protection but are not skilled at generating pseudo text samples with large models. In this paper, we transfer DP-based pseudo sample generation task to DP-based generated samples discrimination task, where we propose a DP-based DA method with a LLM and a DP-based discriminator for text classification on private domains. We construct a knowledge distillation model as the DP-based discriminator: teacher models, accessing private data, teaches students how to select private samples with calibrated noise to achieve DP. To constrain the distribution of DA's generation, we propose a DP-based tutor that models the noised private distribution and controls samples' generation with a low privacy cost. We theoretically analyze our model's privacy protection and empirically verify our model.

EEGChaT: A Transformer-Based Modular Channel Selector for SEEG Analysis

Chen Wang, Yansen Wang, Dongqi Han et al. · cmu, tsinghua

Analyzing stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) signals is critical for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications and neuroscience research, yet poses significant challenges due to the large number of input channels and their heterogeneous relevance. Traditional channel selection methods struggle to scale or provide meaningful interpretability for SEEG data. In this work, we propose EEGChaT, a novel Transformer-based channel selection module designed to automatically identify the most task-relevant channels in SEEG recordings. EEGChaT introduces Channel Aggregation Tokens (CATs) to aggregate information across channels, and leverages an improved Attention Rollout technique to compute interpretable, quantitative channel importance scores. We evaluate EEGChaT on the DuIN dataset, demonstrating that integrating EEGChaT with existing classification models consistently improves decoding accuracy, achieving up to 17\% absolute gains. Furthermore, the channel weights produced by EEGChaT show substantial overlap with manually selected channels, supporting the interpretability of the approach. Our results suggest that EEGChaT is an effective and generalizable solution for channel selection in high-dimensional SEEG analysis, offering both enhanced performance and insights into neural signal relevance.

Self-Evolution Learning for Mixup: Enhance Data Augmentation on Few-Shot Text Classification Tasks

Haoqi Zheng, Qihuang Zhong, Liang Ding et al.

Text classification tasks often encounter few shot scenarios with limited labeled data, and addressing data scarcity is crucial. Data augmentation with mixup has shown to be effective on various text classification tasks. However, most of the mixup methods do not consider the varying degree of learning difficulty in different stages of training and generate new samples with one hot labels, resulting in the model over confidence. In this paper, we propose a self evolution learning (SE) based mixup approach for data augmentation in text classification, which can generate more adaptive and model friendly pesudo samples for the model training. SE focuses on the variation of the model's learning ability. To alleviate the model confidence, we introduce a novel instance specific label smoothing approach, which linearly interpolates the model's output and one hot labels of the original samples to generate new soft for label mixing up. Through experimental analysis, in addition to improving classification accuracy, we demonstrate that SE also enhances the model's generalize ability.
