Parameter estimation for linear control valve with hysteresis

Li Liang, Liu Jiannan, Wan Huaqing

The problem of estimating parameters of linear control valve with hysteresis is considered. The hysteretic behavior of control valve is formulated as a switched linear model. An indicator vector, which shows the switching epochs of switched linear model, is explored by subspace decomposition on measurements. With the help of indicator vector, the noisy measurements are classified into separate groups, each corresponding to up-stroke and down-stroke of control valve respectively. The least squares technique is adopted to estimate the parameters of control valve. It is shown that the proposed technique exactly estimates the parameters and switching epochs in absence of noise and exhibits dominant advantage in noisy case.

Delay-Aware Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Cooperative and Competitive Environments

Baiming Chen, Mengdi Xu, Zuxin Liu et al.

Action and observation delays exist prevalently in the real-world cyber-physical systems which may pose challenges in reinforcement learning design. It is particularly an arduous task when handling multi-agent systems where the delay of one agent could spread to other agents. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a novel framework to deal with delays as well as the non-stationary training issue of multi-agent tasks with model-free deep reinforcement learning. We formally define the Delay-Aware Markov Game that incorporates the delays of all agents in the environment. To solve Delay-Aware Markov Games, we apply centralized training and decentralized execution that allows agents to use extra information to ease the non-stationarity issue of the multi-agent systems during training, without the need of a centralized controller during execution. Experiments are conducted in multi-agent particle environments including cooperative communication, cooperative navigation, and competitive experiments. We also test the proposed algorithm in traffic scenarios that require coordination of all autonomous vehicles to show the practical value of delay-awareness. Results show that the proposed delay-aware multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm greatly alleviates the performance degradation introduced by delay. Delay-Aware Model-Based Reinforcement Learning for Continuous Control

Baiming Chen, Mengdi Xu, Liang Li et al.

Action delays degrade the performance of reinforcement learning in many real-world systems. This paper proposes a formal definition of delay-aware Markov Decision Process and proves it can be transformed into standard MDP with augmented states using the Markov reward process. We develop a delay-aware model-based reinforcement learning framework that can incorporate the multi-step delay into the learned system models without learning effort. Experiments with the Gym and MuJoCo platforms show that the proposed delay-aware model-based algorithm is more efficient in training and transferable between systems with various durations of delay compared with off-policy model-free reinforcement learning methods. FedEx: Expediting Federated Learning over Heterogeneous Mobile Devices by Overlapping and Participant Selection

Jiaxiang Geng, Boyu Li, Xiaoqi Qin et al.

Training latency is critical for the success of numerous intrigued applications ignited by federated learning (FL) over heterogeneous mobile devices. By revolutionarily overlapping local gradient transmission with continuous local computing, FL can remarkably reduce its training latency over homogeneous clients, yet encounter severe model staleness, model drifts, memory cost and straggler issues in heterogeneous environments. To unleash the full potential of overlapping, we propose, FedEx, a novel \underline{fed}erated learning approach to \underline{ex}pedite FL training over mobile devices under data, computing and wireless heterogeneity. FedEx redefines the overlapping procedure with staleness ceilings to constrain memory consumption and make overlapping compatible with participation selection (PS) designs. Then, FedEx characterizes the PS utility function by considering the latency reduced by overlapping, and provides a holistic PS solution to address the straggler issue. FedEx also introduces a simple but effective metric to trigger overlapping, in order to avoid model drifts. Experimental results show that compared with its peer designs, FedEx demonstrates substantial reductions in FL training latency over heterogeneous mobile devices with limited memory cost.

Mogao: An Omni Foundation Model for Interleaved Multi-Modal Generation

Chao Liao, Liyang Liu, Xun Wang et al.

Recent progress in unified models for image understanding and generation has been impressive, yet most approaches remain limited to single-modal generation conditioned on multiple modalities. In this paper, we present Mogao, a unified framework that advances this paradigm by enabling interleaved multi-modal generation through a causal approach. Mogao integrates a set of key technical improvements in architecture design, including a deep-fusion design, dual vision encoders, interleaved rotary position embeddings, and multi-modal classifier-free guidance, which allow it to harness the strengths of both autoregressive models for text generation and diffusion models for high-quality image synthesis. These practical improvements also make Mogao particularly effective to process interleaved sequences of text and images arbitrarily. To further unlock the potential of unified models, we introduce an efficient training strategy on a large-scale, in-house dataset specifically curated for joint text and image generation. Extensive experiments show that Mogao not only achieves state-of-the-art performance in multi-modal understanding and text-to-image generation, but also excels in producing high-quality, coherent interleaved outputs. Its emergent capabilities in zero-shot image editing and compositional generation highlight Mogao as a practical omni-modal foundation model, paving the way for future development and scaling the unified multi-modal systems.

PAE MobiLLM: Privacy-Aware and Efficient LLM Fine-Tuning on the Mobile Device via Additive Side-Tuning

Xingke Yang, Liang Li, Zhiyi Wan et al.

There is a huge gap between numerous intriguing applications fostered by on-device large language model (LLM) fine-tuning (FT) from fresh mobile data and the limited resources of a mobile device. While existing server-assisted methods (e.g., split learning or side-tuning) may enable LLM FT on the local mobile device, they suffer from heavy communication burdens of activation transmissions, and may disclose data and labels to the server. To address those issues, we develop PAE MobiLLM, a a privacy-aware and efficient LLM FT method which can be deployed on the mobile device via server-assisted additive side-tuning. To further accelerate FT convergence and improve computing efficiency, PAE MobiLLM integrates activation caching on the server side, which allows the server to reuse historical activations and saves the mobile device from repeatedly computing forward passes for the recurring data samples. Besides, to reduce communication cost, PAE MobiLLM develops an activation shortcut that transmits only the token involved in the loss calculation instead of full activation matrices to guide the side network tuning. Last but not least, PAE MobiLLM introduces the additive adapter side-network design which makes the server train the adapter modules based on device-defined prediction differences rather than raw ground-truth labels. In this way, the server can only assist device-defined side-network computing, and learn nothing about data and labels. Extensive experimental results demonstrate PAE MobiLLM's superiority.

A Multimodal Foundation Model to Enhance Generalizability and Data Efficiency for Pan-cancer Prognosis Prediction

Huajun Zhou, Fengtao Zhou, Jiabo Ma et al.

Multimodal data provides heterogeneous information for a holistic understanding of the tumor microenvironment. However, existing AI models often struggle to harness the rich information within multimodal data and extract poorly generalizable representations. Here we present MICE (Multimodal data Integration via Collaborative Experts), a multimodal foundation model that effectively integrates pathology images, clinical reports, and genomics data for precise pan-cancer prognosis prediction. Instead of conventional multi-expert modules, MICE employs multiple functionally diverse experts to comprehensively capture both cross-cancer and cancer-specific insights. Leveraging data from 11,799 patients across 30 cancer types, we enhanced MICE's generalizability by coupling contrastive and supervised learning. MICE outperformed both unimodal and state-of-the-art multi-expert-based multimodal models, demonstrating substantial improvements in C-index ranging from 3.8% to 11.2% on internal cohorts and 5.8% to 8.8% on independent cohorts, respectively. Moreover, it exhibited remarkable data efficiency across diverse clinical scenarios. With its enhanced generalizability and data efficiency, MICE establishes an effective and scalable foundation for pan-cancer prognosis prediction, holding strong potential to personalize tailored therapies and improve treatment outcomes.
