Segment as Points for Efficient Online Multi-Object Tracking and SegmentationZhenbo Xu, Wei Zhang, Xiao Tan et al.
Current multi-object tracking and segmentation (MOTS) methods follow the tracking-by-detection paradigm and adopt convolutions for feature extraction. However, as affected by the inherent receptive field, convolution based feature extraction inevitably mixes up the foreground features and the background features, resulting in ambiguities in the subsequent instance association. In this paper, we propose a highly effective method for learning instance embeddings based on segments by converting the compact image representation to un-ordered 2D point cloud representation. Our method generates a new tracking-by-points paradigm where discriminative instance embeddings are learned from randomly selected points rather than images. Furthermore, multiple informative data modalities are converted into point-wise representations to enrich point-wise features. The resulting online MOTS framework, named PointTrack, surpasses all the state-of-the-art methods including 3D tracking methods by large margins (5.4% higher MOTSA and 18 times faster over MOTSFusion) with the near real-time speed (22 FPS). Evaluations across three datasets demonstrate both the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. Moreover, based on the observation that current MOTS datasets lack crowded scenes, we build a more challenging MOTS dataset named APOLLO MOTS with higher instance density. Both APOLLO MOTS and our codes are publicly available at https://github.com/detectRecog/PointTrack.

Underactuated Motion Planning and Control for Jumping with Wheeled-Bipedal RobotsHua Chen, Bingheng Wang, Zejun Hong et al.
This paper studies jumping for wheeled-bipedal robots, a motion that takes full advantage of the benefits from the hybrid wheeled and legged design features. A comprehensive hierarchical scheme for motion planning and control of jumping with wheeled-bipedal robots is developed. Underactuation of the wheeled-bipedal dynamics is the main difficulty to be addressed, especially in the planning problem. To tackle this issue, a novel wheeled-spring-loaded inverted pendulum (W-SLIP) model is proposed to characterize the essential dynamics of wheeled-bipedal robots during jumping. Relying on a differential-flatness-like property of the W-SLIP model, a tractable quadratic programming based solution is devised for planning jumping motions for wheeled-bipedal robots. Combined with a kinematic planning scheme accounting for the flight phase motion, a complete planning scheme for the W-SLIP model is developed. To enable accurate tracking of the planned trajectories, a linear quadratic regulator based wheel controller and a task-space whole-body controller for the other joints are blended through disturbance observers. The overall planning and control scheme is validated using V-REP simulations of a prototype wheeled-bipedal robot.

Autonomous Social Distancing in Urban Environments using a Quadruped RobotTingxiang Fan, Zhiming Chen, Xuan Zhao et al.
COVID-19 pandemic has become a global challenge faced by people all over the world. Social distancing has been proved to be an effective practice to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Against this backdrop, we propose that the surveillance robots can not only monitor but also promote social distancing. Robots can be flexibly deployed and they can take precautionary actions to remind people of practicing social distancing. In this paper, we introduce a fully autonomous surveillance robot based on a quadruped platform that can promote social distancing in complex urban environments. Specifically, to achieve autonomy, we mount multiple cameras and a 3D LiDAR on the legged robot. The robot then uses an onboard real-time social distancing detection system to track nearby pedestrian groups. Next, the robot uses a crowd-aware navigation algorithm to move freely in highly dynamic scenarios. The robot finally uses a crowd-aware routing algorithm to effectively promote social distancing by using human-friendly verbal cues to send suggestions to over-crowded pedestrians. We demonstrate and validate that our robot can be operated autonomously by conducting several experiments in various urban scenarios.

Optimal Control of a Differentially Flat 2D Spring-Loaded Inverted Pendulum ModelHua Chen, Patrick M. Wensing, Wei Zhang
This paper considers the optimal control problem of an extended spring-loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model with two additional actuators for active leg length and hip torque modulation. These additional features arise naturally in practice, allowing for consideration of swing leg kinematics during flight and active control over stance dynamics. On the other hand, nonlinearity and the hybrid nature of the overall SLIP dynamics introduce challenges in the analysis and control of the model. In this paper, we first show that the stance dynamics of the considered SLIP model are differentially flat, which has a strong implication regarding controllability of the stance dynamics. Leveraging this powerful property, a tractable optimal control strategy is developed. This strategy enables online solution while also treating the hybrid nature of the SLIP dynamics. Together with the optimal control strategy, the extended SLIP model grants active disturbance rejection capability at any point during the gait. Performance of the proposed control strategy is demonstrated via numerical tests and shows significant advantage over existing methods.

A Unified Stochastic Hybrid System Approach to Aggregate Modeling of Responsive LoadsLin Zhao, Wei Zhang
Aggregate load modeling is of fundamental importance for systematic analysis and design of various demand response strategies. Instead of keeping track of the trajectories of individual loads, the aggregate modeling problem focuses on characterizing the density evolution of the load population. Most existing models are only applicable to Thermostatically Controlled Loads (TCL) with first-order linear dynamics. This paper develops a unified aggregate modeling approach that can be used for general TCLs as well as deferrable loads. We propose a deterministic hybrid system model to describe individual load dynamics under demand response rules, and develop a general stochastic hybrid system (SHS) model to capture the population dynamics. We also derive a set of partial differential equations (PDE) that governs the probability density evolution of the SHS. Our results cannot be obtained using the exiting SHS tools in the literature as the proposed SHS model involves both random and deterministic switchings with general switching surfaces in multi-dimensional domains. The derived PDE model includes many existing aggregate load modeling results as special cases and can be used in many other realistic modeling scenarios that have not been studied in the literature.
