ITRE: Low-light Image Enhancement Based on Illumination Transmission Ratio Estimation

Yu Wang, Yihong Wang, Tong Liu et al.

Noise, artifacts, and over-exposure are significant challenges in the field of low-light image enhancement. Existing methods often struggle to address these issues simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a novel Retinex-based method, called ITRE, which suppresses noise and artifacts from the origin of the model, prevents over-exposure throughout the enhancement process. Specifically, we assume that there must exist a pixel which is least disturbed by low light within pixels of same color. First, clustering the pixels on the RGB color space to find the Illumination Transmission Ratio (ITR) matrix of the whole image, which determines that noise is not over-amplified easily. Next, we consider ITR of the image as the initial illumination transmission map to construct a base model for refined transmission map, which prevents artifacts. Additionally, we design an over-exposure module that captures the fundamental characteristics of pixel over-exposure and seamlessly integrate it into the base model. Finally, there is a possibility of weak enhancement when inter-class distance of pixels with same color is too small. To counteract this, we design a Robust-Guard module that safeguards the robustness of the image enhancement process. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in suppressing noise, preventing artifacts, and controlling over-exposure level simultaneously. Our method performs superiority in qualitative and quantitative performance evaluations by comparing with state-of-the-art methods.

FrameFusion: Combining Similarity and Importance for Video Token Reduction on Large Vision Language Models

Tianyu Fu, Tengxuan Liu, Qinghao Han et al. · tsinghua

The increasing demand to process long and high-resolution videos significantly burdens Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) due to the enormous number of visual tokens. Existing token reduction methods primarily prune tokens based on importance metrics, such as cumulative attention scores. However, even important tokens may exhibit high redundancy caused by similarity among adjacent video frames and repetitive visual elements. To address this limitation, we propose FrameFusion, a novel token reduction approach integrating similarity-based merging with importance-based pruning. We conduct a thorough study on token similarity characteristics, revealing three key insights: (1) spatially corresponding visual tokens between adjacent frames have higher cosine similarities compared to other token pairs; (2) high token similarities prominently decrease in deeper model layers; and (3) token similarity rankings are highly consistent across different layers. Guided by these observations, FrameFusion computes token similarities exclusively between corresponding visual tokens from adjacent frames, applies token merging at initial successive layers followed by pruning in deeper layers, and adopts a cascaded merging strategy to further enhance efficiency. We evaluate FrameFusion comprehensively across six diverse LVLMs, ranging from 2B to 72B parameters, using five video benchmarks encompassing video retrieval, question-answering, and spatial-temporal understanding tasks. Experiments show that FrameFusion reduces visual tokens by 70%, achieving 1.6-3.6x end-to-end speedups, with an average performance impact of less than 3%. TDR-OBCA: A Reliable Planner for Autonomous Driving in Free-Space Environment

Runxin He, Jinyun Zhou, Shu Jiang et al.

This paper presents an optimization-based collision avoidance trajectory generation method for autonomous driving in free-space environments, with enhanced robustness, driving comfort and efficiency. Starting from the hybrid optimization-based framework, we introduces two warm start methods, temporal and dual variable warm starts, to improve the efficiency. We also reformulate the problem to improve the robustness and efficiency. We name this new algorithm TDR-OBCA. With these changes, compared with original hybrid optimization we achieve a 96.67% failure rate decrease with respect to initial conditions, 13.53% increase in driving comforts and 3.33% to 44.82% increase in planner efficiency as obstacles number scales. We validate our results in hundreds of simulation scenarios and hundreds of hours of public road tests in both U.S. and China. Our source code is available at https://github.com/ApolloAuto/apollo.

287,872 Supermassive Black Holes Masses: Deep Learning Approaching Reverberation Mapping Accuracy

Yuhao Lu, HengJian SiTu, Jie Li et al.

We present a population-scale catalogue of 287,872 supermassive black hole masses with high accuracy. Using a deep encoder-decoder network trained on optical spectra with reverberation-mapping (RM) based labels of 849 quasars and applied to all SDSS quasars up to $z=4$, our method achieves a root-mean-square error of $0.058$\,dex, a relative uncertainty of $\approx 14\%$, and coefficient of determination $R^{2}\approx0.91$ with respect to RM-based masses, far surpassing traditional single-line virial estimators. Notably, the high accuracy is maintained for both low ($<10^{7.5}\,M_\odot$) and high ($>10^{9}\,M_\odot$) mass quasars, where empirical relations are unreliable.

Can AI Understand Our Universe? Test of Fine-Tuning GPT by Astrophysical Data

Yu Wang, Shu-Rui Zhang, Aidin Momtaz et al.

ChatGPT has been the most talked-about concept in recent months, captivating both professionals and the general public alike, and has sparked discussions about the changes that artificial intelligence (AI) will bring to the world. As physicists and astrophysicists, we are curious about if scientific data can be correctly analyzed by large language models (LLMs) and yield accurate physics. In this article, we fine-tune the generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) model by the astronomical data from the observations of galaxies, quasars, stars, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and the simulations of black holes (BHs), the fine-tuned model demonstrates its capability to classify astrophysical phenomena, distinguish between two types of GRBs, deduce the redshift of quasars, and estimate BH parameters. We regard this as a successful test, marking the LLM's proven efficacy in scientific research. With the ever-growing volume of multidisciplinary data and the advancement of AI technology, we look forward to the emergence of a more fundamental and comprehensive understanding of our universe. This article also shares some interesting thoughts on data collection and AI design. Using the approach of understanding the universe - looking outward at data and inward for fundamental building blocks - as a guideline, we propose a method of series expansion for AI, suggesting ways to train and control AI that is smarter than humans.

Multi-UAV Coverage Planning with Limited Endurance in Disaster Environment

Hongyu Song, Jincheng Yu, Jiantao Qiu et al.

For scenes such as floods and earthquakes, the disaster area is large, and rescue time is tight. Multi-UAV exploration is more efficient than a single UAV. Existing UAV exploration work is modeled as a Coverage Path Planning (CPP) task to achieve full coverage of the area in the presence of obstacles. However, the endurance capability of UAV is limited, and the rescue time is urgent. Thus, even using multiple UAVs cannot achieve complete disaster area coverage in time. Therefore, in this paper we propose a multi-Agent Endurance-limited CPP (MAEl-CPP) problem based on a priori heatmap of the disaster area, which requires the exploration of more valuable areas under limited energy. Furthermore, we propose a path planning algorithm for the MAEl-CPP problem, by ranking the possible disaster areas according to their importance through satellite or remote aerial images and completing path planning according to the importance level. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is at least twice as effective as the existing method in terms of search efficiency.

DL-IAPS and PJSO: A Path/Speed Decoupled Trajectory Optimization and its Application in Autonomous Driving

Jinyun Zhou, Runxin He, Yu Wang et al.

This paper presents a free space trajectory optimization algorithm of autonomous driving vehicle, which decouples the collision-free trajectory planning problem into a Dual-Loop Iterative Anchoring Path Smoothing (DL-IAPS) and a Piece-wise Jerk Speed Optimization (PJSO). The work leads to remarkable driving performance improvements including more precise collision avoidance, higher control feasibility and better driving comfort, as those are often hard to realize in other existing path/speed decoupled trajectory optimization methods. Our algorithm's efficiency, robustness and adaptiveness to complex driving scenarios have been validated by both simulations and real on-road tests.
