Slice Imputation: Intermediate Slice Interpolation for Anisotropic 3D Medical Image Segmentation

Zhaotao Wu, Jia Wei, Jiabing Wang et al.

We introduce a novel frame-interpolation-based method for slice imputation to improve segmentation accuracy for anisotropic 3D medical images, in which the number of slices and their corresponding segmentation labels can be increased between two consecutive slices in anisotropic 3D medical volumes. Unlike previous inter-slice imputation methods, which only focus on the smoothness in the axial direction, this study aims to improve the smoothness of the interpolated 3D medical volumes in all three directions: axial, sagittal, and coronal. The proposed multitask inter-slice imputation method, in particular, incorporates a smoothness loss function to evaluate the smoothness of the interpolated 3D medical volumes in the through-plane direction (sagittal and coronal). It not only improves the resolution of the interpolated 3D medical volumes in the through-plane direction but also transforms them into isotropic representations, which leads to better segmentation performances. Experiments on whole tumor segmentation in the brain, liver tumor segmentation, and prostate segmentation indicate that our method outperforms the competing slice imputation methods on both computed tomography and magnetic resonance images volumes in most cases.

Semantic-guided Disentangled Representation for Unsupervised Cross-modality Medical Image Segmentation

Shuai Wang, Rui Li

Disentangled representation is a powerful technique to tackle domain shift problem in medical image analysis in unsupervised domain adaptation setting. However, previous methods only focus on exacting domain-invariant feature and ignore whether exacted feature is meaningful for downstream tasks. We propose a novel framework, called semantic-guided disentangled representation (SGDR), an effective method to exact semantically meaningful feature for segmentation task to improve performance of cross modality medical image segmentation in unsupervised domain adaptation setting. To exact the meaningful domain-invariant features of different modality, we introduce a content discriminator to force the content representation to be embedded to the same space and a feature discriminator to exact the meaningful representation. We also use pixel-level annotations to guide the encoder to learn features that are meaningful for segmentation task.We validated our method on two public datasets and experiment results show that our approach outperforms the state of the art methods on two evaluation metrics by a significant margin.

Towards Generalizable Medical Image Segmentation with Pixel-wise Uncertainty Estimation

Shuai Wang, Zipei Yan, Daoan Zhang et al.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) achieve promising performance in visual recognition under the independent and identically distributed (IID) hypothesis. In contrast, the IID hypothesis is not universally guaranteed in numerous real-world applications, especially in medical image analysis. Medical image segmentation is typically formulated as a pixel-wise classification task in which each pixel is classified into a category. However, this formulation ignores the hard-to-classified pixels, e.g., some pixels near the boundary area, as they usually confuse DNNs. In this paper, we first explore that hard-to-classified pixels are associated with high uncertainty. Based on this, we propose a novel framework that utilizes uncertainty estimation to highlight hard-to-classified pixels for DNNs, thereby improving its generalization. We evaluate our method on two popular benchmarks: prostate and fundus datasets. The results of the experiment demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods.
