The Future of Consumer Edge-AI Computing

Stefanos Laskaridis, Stylianos I. Venieris, Alexandros Kouris et al.

In the last decade, Deep Learning has rapidly infiltrated the consumer end, mainly thanks to hardware acceleration across devices. However, as we look towards the future, it is evident that isolated hardware will be insufficient. Increasingly complex AI tasks demand shared resources, cross-device collaboration, and multiple data types, all without compromising user privacy or quality of experience. To address this, we introduce a novel paradigm centered around EdgeAI-Hub devices, designed to reorganise and optimise compute resources and data access at the consumer edge. To this end, we lay a holistic foundation for the transition from on-device to Edge-AI serving systems in consumer environments, detailing their components, structure, challenges and opportunities.

Towards Harmonized Uncertainty Estimation for Large Language Models

Rui Li, Jing Long, Muge Qi et al.

To facilitate robust and trustworthy deployment of large language models (LLMs), it is essential to quantify the reliability of their generations through uncertainty estimation. While recent efforts have made significant advancements by leveraging the internal logic and linguistic features of LLMs to estimate uncertainty scores, our empirical analysis highlights the pitfalls of these methods to strike a harmonized estimation between indication, balance, and calibration, which hinders their broader capability for accurate uncertainty estimation. To address this challenge, we propose CUE (Corrector for Uncertainty Estimation): A straightforward yet effective method that employs a lightweight model trained on data aligned with the target LLM's performance to adjust uncertainty scores. Comprehensive experiments across diverse models and tasks demonstrate its effectiveness, which achieves consistent improvements of up to 60% over existing methods.

Adaptive Processor Frequency Adjustment for Mobile Edge Computing with Intermittent Energy Supply

Tiansheng Huang, Weiwei Lin, Xiaobin Hong et al.

With astonishing speed, bandwidth, and scale, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has played an increasingly important role in the next generation of connectivity and service delivery. Yet, along with the massive deployment of MEC servers, the ensuing energy issue is now on an increasingly urgent agenda. In the current context, the large scale deployment of renewable-energy-supplied MEC servers is perhaps the most promising solution for the incoming energy issue. Nonetheless, as a result of the intermittent nature of their power sources, these special design MEC server must be more cautious about their energy usage, in a bid to maintain their service sustainability as well as service standard. Targeting optimization on a single-server MEC scenario, we in this paper propose NAFA, an adaptive processor frequency adjustment solution, to enable an effective plan of the server's energy usage. By learning from the historical data revealing request arrival and energy harvest pattern, the deep reinforcement learning-based solution is capable of making intelligent schedules on the server's processor frequency, so as to strike a good balance between service sustainability and service quality. The superior performance of NAFA is substantiated by real-data-based experiments, wherein NAFA demonstrates up to 20% increase in average request acceptance ratio and up to 50% reduction in average request processing time.
