Prompt Combines Paraphrase: Teaching Pre-trained Models to Understand Rare Biomedical Words

Prompt-based fine-tuning for pre-trained models has proven effective for many natural language processing tasks under few-shot settings in general domain. However, tuning with prompt in biomedical domain has not been investigated thoroughly. Biomedical words are often rare in general domain, but quite ubiquitous in biomedical contexts, which dramatically deteriorates the performance of pre-trained models on downstream biomedical applications even after fine-tuning, especially in low-resource scenarios. We propose a simple yet effective approach to helping models learn rare biomedical words during tuning with prompt. Experimental results show that our method can achieve up to 6% improvement in biomedical natural language inference task without any extra parameters or training steps using few-shot vanilla prompt settings.

Unleashing Potential of Evidence in Knowledge-Intensive Dialogue Generation

Incorporating external knowledge into dialogue generation (KIDG) is crucial for improving the correctness of response, where evidence fragments serve as knowledgeable snippets supporting the factual dialogue replies. However, introducing irrelevant content often adversely impacts reply quality and easily leads to hallucinated responses. Prior work on evidence retrieval and integration in dialogue systems falls short of fully leveraging existing evidence since the model fails to locate useful fragments accurately and overlooks hidden evidence labels within the KIDG dataset. To fully Unleash the potential of evidence, we propose a framework to effectively incorporate Evidence in knowledge-Intensive Dialogue Generation (u-EIDG). Specifically, we introduce an automatic evidence generation framework that harnesses the power of Large Language Models (LLMs) to mine reliable evidence veracity labels from unlabeled data. By utilizing these evidence labels, we train a reliable evidence indicator to effectively identify relevant evidence from retrieved passages. Furthermore, we propose an evidence-augmented generator with an evidence-focused attention mechanism, which allows the model to concentrate on evidenced segments. Experimental results on MultiDoc2Dial demonstrate the efficacy of evidential label augmentation and refined attention mechanisms in improving model performance. Further analysis confirms that the proposed method outperforms other baselines (+3~+5 points) regarding coherence and factual consistency.

Utilising a Large Language Model to Annotate Subject Metadata: A Case Study in an Australian National Research Data Catalogue

In support of open and reproducible research, there has been a rapidly increasing number of datasets made available for research. As the availability of datasets increases, it becomes more important to have quality metadata for discovering and reusing them. Yet, it is a common issue that datasets often lack quality metadata due to limited resources for data curation. Meanwhile, technologies such as artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) are progressing rapidly. Recently, systems based on these technologies, such as ChatGPT, have demonstrated promising capabilities for certain data curation tasks. This paper proposes to leverage LLMs for cost-effective annotation of subject metadata through the LLM-based in-context learning. Our method employs GPT-3.5 with prompts designed for annotating subject metadata, demonstrating promising performance in automatic metadata annotation. However, models based on in-context learning cannot acquire discipline-specific rules, resulting in lower performance in several categories. This limitation arises from the limited contextual information available for subject inference. To the best of our knowledge, we are introducing, for the first time, an in-context learning method that harnesses large language models for automated subject metadata annotation.

Does QA-based intermediate training help fine-tuning language models for text classification?

Fine-tuning pre-trained language models for downstream tasks has become a norm for NLP. Recently it is found that intermediate training based on high-level inference tasks such as Question Answering (QA) can improve the performance of some language models for target tasks. However it is not clear if intermediate training generally benefits various language models. In this paper, using the SQuAD-2.0 QA task for intermediate training for target text classification tasks, we experimented on eight tasks for single-sequence classification and eight tasks for sequence-pair classification using two base and two compact language models. Our experiments show that QA-based intermediate training generates varying transfer performance across different language models, except for similar QA tasks.

Less is More: Rejecting Unreliable Reviews for Product Question Answering

Promptly and accurately answering questions on products is important for e-commerce applications. Manually answering product questions (e.g. on community question answering platforms) results in slow response and does not scale. Recent studies show that product reviews are a good source for real-time, automatic product question answering (PQA). In the literature, PQA is formulated as a retrieval problem with the goal to search for the most relevant reviews to answer a given product question. In this paper, we focus on the issue of answerability and answer reliability for PQA using reviews. Our investigation is based on the intuition that many questions may not be answerable with a finite set of reviews. When a question is not answerable, a system should return nil answers rather than providing a list of irrelevant reviews, which can have significant negative impact on user experience. Moreover, for answerable questions, only the most relevant reviews that answer the question should be included in the result. We propose a conformal prediction based framework to improve the reliability of PQA systems, where we reject unreliable answers so that the returned results are more concise and accurate at answering the product question, including returning nil answers for unanswerable questions. Experiments on a widely used Amazon dataset show encouraging results of our proposed framework. More broadly, our results demonstrate a novel and effective application of conformal methods to a retrieval task.
