Bridging the Gap: Multi-Level Cross-Modality Joint Alignment for Visible-Infrared Person Re-Identification

Tengfei Liang, Yi Jin, Wu Liu et al.

Visible-Infrared person Re-IDentification (VI-ReID) is a challenging cross-modality image retrieval task that aims to match pedestrians' images across visible and infrared cameras. To solve the modality gap, existing mainstream methods adopt a learning paradigm converting the image retrieval task into an image classification task with cross-entropy loss and auxiliary metric learning losses. These losses follow the strategy of adjusting the distribution of extracted embeddings to reduce the intra-class distance and increase the inter-class distance. However, such objectives do not precisely correspond to the final test setting of the retrieval task, resulting in a new gap at the optimization level. By rethinking these keys of VI-ReID, we propose a simple and effective method, the Multi-level Cross-modality Joint Alignment (MCJA), bridging both modality and objective-level gap. For the former, we design the Modality Alignment Augmentation, which consists of three novel strategies, the weighted grayscale, cross-channel cutmix, and spectrum jitter augmentation, effectively reducing modality discrepancy in the image space. For the latter, we introduce a new Cross-Modality Retrieval loss. It is the first work to constrain from the perspective of the ranking list, aligning with the goal of the testing stage. Moreover, based on the global feature only, our method exhibits good performance and can serve as a strong baseline method for the VI-ReID community.

Looking From the Future: Multi-order Iterations Can Enhance Adversarial Attack Transferability

Zijian Ying, Qianmu Li, Tao Wang et al.

Various methods try to enhance adversarial transferability by improving the generalization from different perspectives. In this paper, we rethink the optimization process and propose a novel sequence optimization concept, which is named Looking From the Future (LFF). LFF makes use of the original optimization process to refine the very first local optimization choice. Adapting the LFF concept to the adversarial attack task, we further propose an LFF attack as well as an MLFF attack with better generalization ability. Furthermore, guiding with the LFF concept, we propose an $LLF^{\mathcal{N}}$ attack which entends the LFF attack to a multi-order attack, further enhancing the transfer attack ability. All our proposed methods can be directly applied to the iteration-based attack methods. We evaluate our proposed method on the ImageNet1k dataset by applying several SOTA adversarial attack methods under four kinds of tasks. Experimental results show that our proposed method can greatly enhance the attack transferability. Ablation experiments are also applied to verify the effectiveness of each component. The source code will be released after this paper is accepted.

Complementary Advantages of ChatGPTs and Human Readers in Reasoning: Evidence from English Text Reading Comprehension

Tongquan Zhou, Yao Zhang, Siyi Cao et al.

ChatGPT has shown its great power in text processing, including its reasoning ability from text reading. However, there has not been any direct comparison between human readers and ChatGPT in reasoning ability related to text reading. This study was undertaken to investigate how ChatGPTs (i.e., ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus) and Chinese senior school students as ESL learners exhibited their reasoning ability from English narrative texts. Additionally, we compared the two ChatGPTs in the reasoning performances when commands were updated elaborately. The whole study was composed of three reasoning tests: Test 1 for commonsense inference, Test 2 for emotional inference, and Test 3 for causal inference. The results showed that in Test 1, the students outdid the two ChatGPT versions in local-culture-related inferences but performed worse than the chatbots in daily-life inferences. In Test 2, ChatGPT Plus excelled whereas ChatGPT lagged behind in accuracy. In association with both accuracy and frequency of correct responses, the students were inferior to the two chatbots. Compared with ChatGPTs' better performance in positive emotions, the students showed their superiority in inferring negative emotions. In Test 3, the students demonstrated better logical analysis, outdoing both chatbots. In updating command condition, ChatGPT Plus displayed good causal reasoning ability while ChatGPT kept unchanged. Our study reveals that human readers and ChatGPTs have their respective advantages and disadvantages in drawing inferences from text reading comprehension, unlocking a complementary relationship in text-based reasoning.

The Volctrans Neural Speech Translation System for IWSLT 2021

Chengqi Zhao, Zhicheng Liu, Jian Tong et al.

This paper describes the systems submitted to IWSLT 2021 by the Volctrans team. We participate in the offline speech translation and text-to-text simultaneous translation tracks. For offline speech translation, our best end-to-end model achieves 8.1 BLEU improvements over the benchmark on the MuST-C test set and is even approaching the results of a strong cascade solution. For text-to-text simultaneous translation, we explore the best practice to optimize the wait-k model. As a result, our final submitted systems exceed the benchmark at around 7 BLEU on the same latency regime. We will publish our code and model to facilitate both future research works and industrial applications. This paper describes the systems submitted to IWSLT 2021 by the Volctrans team. Leveraging Cross-Attention Transformer and Multi-Feature Fusion for Cross-Linguistic Speech Emotion Recognition

Ruoyu Zhao, Xiantao Jiang, F. Richard Yu et al.

Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) plays a crucial role in enhancing human-computer interaction. Cross-Linguistic SER (CLSER) has been a challenging research problem due to significant variability in linguistic and acoustic features of different languages. In this study, we propose a novel approach HuMP-CAT, which combines HuBERT, MFCC, and prosodic characteristics. These features are fused using a cross-attention transformer (CAT) mechanism during feature extraction. Transfer learning is applied to gain from a source emotional speech dataset to the target corpus for emotion recognition. We use IEMOCAP as the source dataset to train the source model and evaluate the proposed method on seven datasets in five languages (e.g., English, German, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese). We show that, by fine-tuning the source model with a small portion of speech from the target datasets, HuMP-CAT achieves an average accuracy of 78.75% across the seven datasets, with notable performance of 88.69% on EMODB (German language) and 79.48% on EMOVO (Italian language). Our extensive evaluation demonstrates that HuMP-CAT outperforms existing methods across multiple target languages.

CMTR: Cross-modality Transformer for Visible-infrared Person Re-identification

Tengfei Liang, Yi Jin, Yajun Gao et al.

Visible-infrared cross-modality person re-identification is a challenging ReID task, which aims to retrieve and match the same identity's images between the heterogeneous visible and infrared modalities. Thus, the core of this task is to bridge the huge gap between these two modalities. The existing convolutional neural network-based methods mainly face the problem of insufficient perception of modalities' information, and can not learn good discriminative modality-invariant embeddings for identities, which limits their performance. To solve these problems, we propose a cross-modality transformer-based method (CMTR) for the visible-infrared person re-identification task, which can explicitly mine the information of each modality and generate better discriminative features based on it. Specifically, to capture modalities' characteristics, we design the novel modality embeddings, which are fused with token embeddings to encode modalities' information. Furthermore, to enhance representation of modality embeddings and adjust matching embeddings' distribution, we propose a modality-aware enhancement loss based on the learned modalities' information, reducing intra-class distance and enlarging inter-class distance. To our knowledge, this is the first work of applying transformer network to the cross-modality re-identification task. We implement extensive experiments on the public SYSU-MM01 and RegDB datasets, and our proposed CMTR model's performance significantly surpasses existing outstanding CNN-based methods.

Grasp stability prediction with time series data based on STFT and LSTM

Tao Wang, Frank Kirchner

With an increasing demand for robots, robotic grasping will has a more important role in future applications. This paper takes grasp stability prediction as the key technology for grasping and tries to solve the problem with time series data inputs including the force and pressure data. Widely applied to more fields to predict unstable grasping with time series data, algorithms can significantly promote the application of artificial intelligence in traditional industries. This research investigates models that combine short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and long short-term memory (LSTM) and then tested generalizability with dexterous hand and suction cup gripper. The experiments suggest good results for grasp stability prediction with the force data and the generalized results in the pressure data. Among the 4 models, (Data + STFT) & LSTM delivers the best performance. We plan to perform more work on grasp stability prediction, generalize the findings to different types of sensors, and apply the grasp stability prediction in more grasping use cases in real life.

Learned Smartphone ISP on Mobile NPUs with Deep Learning, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

Andrey Ignatov, Cheng-Ming Chiang, Hsien-Kai Kuo et al.

As the quality of mobile cameras starts to play a crucial role in modern smartphones, more and more attention is now being paid to ISP algorithms used to improve various perceptual aspects of mobile photos. In this Mobile AI challenge, the target was to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based image signal processing (ISP) pipeline that can replace classical hand-crafted ISPs and achieve nearly real-time performance on smartphone NPUs. For this, the participants were provided with a novel learned ISP dataset consisting of RAW-RGB image pairs captured with the Sony IMX586 Quad Bayer mobile sensor and a professional 102-megapixel medium format camera. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ platform with a dedicated AI processing unit capable of accelerating both floating-point and quantized neural networks. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU and are capable of processing Full HD photos under 60-100 milliseconds while achieving high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in this challenge is provided in this paper.

A Multi-parent Memetic Algorithm for the Linear Ordering Problem

Tao Ye, Tao Wang, Zhipeng Lu et al.

In this paper, we present a multi-parent memetic algorithm (denoted by MPM) for solving the classic Linear Ordering Problem (LOP). The MPM algorithm integrates in particular a multi-parent recombination operator for generating offspring solutions and a distance-and-quality based criterion for pool updating. Our MPM algorithm is assessed on 8 sets of 484 widely used LOP instances and compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms in the literature, showing the efficacy of the MPM algorithm. Specifically, for the 255 instances whose optimal solutions are unknown, the MPM is able to detect better solutions than the previous best-known ones for 66 instances, while matching the previous best-known results for 163 instances. Furthermore, some additional experiments are carried out to analyze the key elements and important parameters of MPM.
