A Domain-Adapted Pipeline for Structured Information Extraction from Police Incident Announcements on Social Media

Structured information extraction from police incident announcements is crucial for timely and accurate data processing, yet presents considerable challenges due to the variability and informal nature of textual sources such as social media posts. To address these challenges, we developed a domain-adapted extraction pipeline that leverages targeted prompt engineering with parameter-efficient fine-tuning of the Qwen2.5-7B model using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). This approach enables the model to handle noisy, heterogeneous text while reliably extracting 15 key fields, including location, event characteristics, and impact assessment, from a high-quality, manually annotated dataset of 4,933 instances derived from 27,822 police briefing posts on Chinese Weibo (2019-2020). Experimental results demonstrated that LoRA-based fine-tuning significantly improved performance over both the base and instruction-tuned models, achieving an accuracy exceeding 98.36% for mortality detection and Exact Match Rates of 95.31% for fatality counts and 95.54% for province-level location extraction. The proposed pipeline thus provides a validated and efficient solution for multi-task structured information extraction in specialized domains, offering a practical framework for transforming unstructured text into reliable structured data in social science research.

Who, What, Why and How? Towards the Monetary Incentive in Crowd Collaboration: A Case Study of Github's Sponsor Mechanism

While many forms of financial support are currently available, there are still many complaints about inadequate financing from software maintainers. In May 2019, GitHub, the world's most active social coding platform, launched the Sponsor mechanism as a step toward more deeply integrating open source development and financial support. This paper collects data on 8,028 maintainers, 13,555 sponsors, and 22,515 sponsorships and conducts a comprehensive analysis. We explore the relationship between the Sponsor mechanism and developers along four dimensions using a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, examining why developers participate, how the mechanism affects developer activity, who obtains more sponsorships, and what mechanism flaws developers have encountered in the process of using it. We find a long-tail effect in the act of sponsorship, with most maintainers' expectations remaining unmet, and sponsorship has only a short-term, slightly positive impact on development activity but is not sustainable. While sponsors participate in this mechanism mainly as a means of thanking the developers of OSS that they use, in practice, the social status of developers is the primary influence on the number of sponsorships. We find that both the Sponsor mechanism and open source donations have certain shortcomings and need further improvements to attract more participants.

OMG: Occlusion-friendly Personalized Multi-concept Generation in Diffusion Models

Personalization is an important topic in text-to-image generation, especially the challenging multi-concept personalization. Current multi-concept methods are struggling with identity preservation, occlusion, and the harmony between foreground and background. In this work, we propose OMG, an occlusion-friendly personalized generation framework designed to seamlessly integrate multiple concepts within a single image. We propose a novel two-stage sampling solution. The first stage takes charge of layout generation and visual comprehension information collection for handling occlusions. The second one utilizes the acquired visual comprehension information and the designed noise blending to integrate multiple concepts while considering occlusions. We also observe that the initiation denoising timestep for noise blending is the key to identity preservation and layout. Moreover, our method can be combined with various single-concept models, such as LoRA and InstantID without additional tuning. Especially, LoRA models on civitai.com can be exploited directly. Extensive experiments demonstrate that OMG exhibits superior performance in multi-concept personalization.

SemDP: Semantic-level Differential Privacy Protection for Face Datasets

While large-scale face datasets have advanced deep learning-based face analysis, they also raise privacy concerns due to the sensitive personal information they contain. Recent schemes have implemented differential privacy to protect face datasets. However, these schemes generally treat each image as a separate database, which does not fully meet the core requirements of differential privacy. In this paper, we propose a semantic-level differential privacy protection scheme that applies to the entire face dataset. Unlike pixel-level differential privacy approaches, our scheme guarantees that semantic privacy in faces is not compromised. The key idea is to convert unstructured data into structured data to enable the application of differential privacy. Specifically, we first extract semantic information from the face dataset to build an attribute database, then apply differential perturbations to obscure this attribute data, and finally use an image synthesis model to generate a protected face dataset. Extensive experimental results show that our scheme can maintain visual naturalness and balance the privacy-utility trade-off compared to the mainstream schemes.

The Development and Prospect of Code Clone

The application of code clone technology accelerates code search, improves code reuse efficiency, and assists in software quality assessment and code vulnerability detection. However, the application of code clones also introduces software quality issues and increases the cost of software maintenance. As an important research field in software engineering, code clone has been extensively explored and studied by researchers, and related studies on various sub-research fields have emerged, including code clone detection, code clone evolution, code clone analysis, etc. However, there lacks a comprehensive exploration of the entire field of code clone, as well as an analysis of the trend of each sub-research field. This paper collects related work of code clones in the past ten years. In summary, the contributions of this paper mainly include: (1) summarize and classify the sub-research fields of code clone, and explore the relative popularity and relation of these sub-research fields; (2) analyze the overall research trend of code clone and each sub-research field; (3) compare and analyze the difference between academy and industry regarding code clone research; (4) construct a network of researchers, and excavate the major contributors in code clone research field; (5) The list of popular conferences and journals was statistically analyzed. The popular research directions in the future include clone visualization, clone management, etc. For the clone detection technique, researchers can optimize the scalability and execution efficiency of the method, targeting particular clone detection tasks and contextual environments, or apply the technology to other related research fields continuously.

Pull Request Latency Explained: An Empirical Overview

Pull request latency evaluation is an essential application of effort evaluation in the pull-based development scenario. It can help the reviewers sort the pull request queue, remind developers about the review processing time, speed up the review process and accelerate software development. There is a lack of work that systematically organizes the factors that affect pull request latency. Also, there is no related work discussing the differences and variations in characteristics in different scenarios and contexts. In this paper, we collected relevant factors through a literature review approach. Then we assessed their relative importance in five scenarios and six different contexts using the mixed-effects linear regression model. We find that the relative importance of factors differs in different scenarios, e.g., the first response time of the reviewer is most important when there exist comments. Meanwhile, the number of commits in a pull request has a more significant impact on pull request latency when closing than submitting due to changes in contributions brought about by the review process.

You Recommend, I Buy: How and Why People Engage in Instant Messaging Based Social Commerce

As an emerging business phenomenon especially in China, instant messaging (IM) based social commerce is growing increasingly popular, attracting hundreds of millions of users and is becoming one important way where people make everyday purchases. Such platforms embed shopping experiences within IM apps, e.g., WeChat, WhatsApp, where real-world friends post and recommend products from the platforms in IM group chats and quite often form lasting recommending/buying relationships. How and why do users engage in IM based social commerce? Do such platforms create novel experiences that are distinct from prior commerce? And do these platforms bring changes to user social lives and relationships? To shed light on these questions, we launched a qualitative study where we carried out semi-structured interviews on 12 instant messaging based social commerce users in China. We showed that IM based social commerce: 1) enables more reachable, cost-reducing, and immersive user shopping experience, 2) shapes user decision-making process in shopping through pre-existing social relationship, mutual trust, shared identity, and community norm, and 3) creates novel social interactions, which can contribute to new tie formation while maintaining existing social relationships. We demonstrate that all these unique aspects link closely to the characteristics of IM platforms, as well as the coupling of user social and economic lives under such business model. Our study provides important research and design implications for social commerce, and decentralized, trusted socio-technical systems in general.

Convolutional Neural Networks over Tree Structures for Programming Language Processing

Programming language processing (similar to natural language processing) is a hot research topic in the field of software engineering; it has also aroused growing interest in the artificial intelligence community. However, different from a natural language sentence, a program contains rich, explicit, and complicated structural information. Hence, traditional NLP models may be inappropriate for programs. In this paper, we propose a novel tree-based convolutional neural network (TBCNN) for programming language processing, in which a convolution kernel is designed over programs' abstract syntax trees to capture structural information. TBCNN is a generic architecture for programming language processing; our experiments show its effectiveness in two different program analysis tasks: classifying programs according to functionality, and detecting code snippets of certain patterns. TBCNN outperforms baseline methods, including several neural models for NLP.
