Tencent ML-Images: A Large-Scale Multi-Label Image Database for Visual Representation Learning

Baoyuan Wu, Weidong Chen, Yanbo Fan et al.

In existing visual representation learning tasks, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are often trained on images annotated with single tags, such as ImageNet. However, a single tag cannot describe all important contents of one image, and some useful visual information may be wasted during training. In this work, we propose to train CNNs from images annotated with multiple tags, to enhance the quality of visual representation of the trained CNN model. To this end, we build a large-scale multi-label image database with 18M images and 11K categories, dubbed Tencent ML-Images. We efficiently train the ResNet-101 model with multi-label outputs on Tencent ML-Images, taking 90 hours for 60 epochs, based on a large-scale distributed deep learning framework,i.e.,TFplus. The good quality of the visual representation of the Tencent ML-Images checkpoint is verified through three transfer learning tasks, including single-label image classification on ImageNet and Caltech-256, object detection on PASCAL VOC 2007, and semantic segmentation on PASCAL VOC 2012. The Tencent ML-Images database, the checkpoints of ResNet-101, and all the training codehave been released at https://github.com/Tencent/tencent-ml-images. It is expected to promote other vision tasks in the research and industry community.

SuperEdge: Towards a Generalization Model for Self-Supervised Edge Detection

Leng Kai, Zhang Zhijie, Liu Jie et al.

Edge detection is a fundamental technique in various computer vision tasks. Edges are indeed effectively delineated by pixel discontinuity and can offer reliable structural information even in textureless areas. State-of-the-art heavily relies on pixel-wise annotations, which are labor-intensive and subject to inconsistencies when acquired manually. In this work, we propose a novel self-supervised approach for edge detection that employs a multi-level, multi-homography technique to transfer annotations from synthetic to real-world datasets. To fully leverage the generated edge annotations, we developed SuperEdge, a streamlined yet efficient model capable of concurrently extracting edges at pixel-level and object-level granularity. Thanks to self-supervised training, our method eliminates the dependency on manual annotated edge labels, thereby enhancing its generalizability across diverse datasets. Comparative evaluations reveal that SuperEdge advances edge detection, demonstrating improvements of 4.9% in ODS and 3.3% in OIS over the existing STEdge method on BIPEDv2.

Rotated Feature Network for multi-orientation object detection

Zhixin Zhang, Xudong Chen, Jie Liu et al.

General detectors follow the pipeline that feature maps extracted from ConvNets are shared between classification and regression tasks. However, there exists obvious conflicting requirements in multi-orientation object detection that classification is insensitive to orientations, while regression is quite sensitive. To address this issue, we provide an Encoder-Decoder architecture, called Rotated Feature Network (RFN), which produces rotation-sensitive feature maps (RS) for regression and rotation-invariant feature maps (RI) for classification. Specifically, the Encoder unit assigns weights for rotated feature maps. The Decoder unit extracts RS and RI by performing resuming operator on rotated and reweighed feature maps, respectively. To make the rotation-invariant characteristics more reliable, we adopt a metric to quantitatively evaluate the rotation-invariance by adding a constrain item in the loss, yielding a promising detection performance. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our method can achieve significant improvement on NWPU VHR-10 and RSOD datasets. We further evaluate the RFN on the scene classification in remote sensing images and object detection in natural images, demonstrating its good generalization ability. The proposed RFN can be integrated into an existing framework, leading to great performance with only a slight increase in model complexity.
