Efficient Generalization Improvement Guided by Random Weight PerturbationTao Li, Weihao Yan, Zehao Lei et al.
To fully uncover the great potential of deep neural networks (DNNs), various learning algorithms have been developed to improve the model's generalization ability. Recently, sharpness-aware minimization (SAM) establishes a generic scheme for generalization improvements by minimizing the sharpness measure within a small neighborhood and achieves state-of-the-art performance. However, SAM requires two consecutive gradient evaluations for solving the min-max problem and inevitably doubles the training time. In this paper, we resort to filter-wise random weight perturbations (RWP) to decouple the nested gradients in SAM. Different from the small adversarial perturbations in SAM, RWP is softer and allows a much larger magnitude of perturbations. Specifically, we jointly optimize the loss function with random perturbations and the original loss function: the former guides the network towards a wider flat region while the latter helps recover the necessary local information. These two loss terms are complementary to each other and mutually independent. Hence, the corresponding gradients can be efficiently computed in parallel, enabling nearly the same training speed as regular training. As a result, we achieve very competitive performance on CIFAR and remarkably better performance on ImageNet (e.g. $\mathbf{ +1.1\%}$) compared with SAM, but always require half of the training time. The code is released at https://github.com/nblt/RWP.
M2DGR: A Multi-sensor and Multi-scenario SLAM Dataset for Ground RobotsJie Yin, Ang Li, Tao Li et al.
We introduce M2DGR: a novel large-scale dataset collected by a ground robot with a full sensor-suite including six fish-eye and one sky-pointing RGB cameras, an infrared camera, an event camera, a Visual-Inertial Sensor (VI-sensor), an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a LiDAR, a consumer-grade Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver and a GNSS-IMU navigation system with real-time kinematic (RTK) signals. All those sensors were well-calibrated and synchronized, and their data were recorded simultaneously. The ground truth trajectories were obtained by the motion capture device, a laser 3D tracker, and an RTK receiver. The dataset comprises 36 sequences (about 1TB) captured in diverse scenarios including both indoor and outdoor environments. We evaluate state-of-the-art SLAM algorithms on M2DGR. Results show that existing solutions perform poorly in some scenarios. For the benefit of the research community, we make the dataset and tools public. The webpage of our project is https://github.com/SJTU-ViSYS/M2DGR.
Attention-SLAM: A Visual Monocular SLAM Learning from Human GazeJinquan Li, Ling Pei, Danping Zou et al.
This paper proposes a novel simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approach, namely Attention-SLAM, which simulates human navigation mode by combining a visual saliency model (SalNavNet) with traditional monocular visual SLAM. Most SLAM methods treat all the features extracted from the images as equal importance during the optimization process. However, the salient feature points in scenes have more significant influence during the human navigation process. Therefore, we first propose a visual saliency model called SalVavNet in which we introduce a correlation module and propose an adaptive Exponential Moving Average (EMA) module. These modules mitigate the center bias to enable the saliency maps generated by SalNavNet to pay more attention to the same salient object. Moreover, the saliency maps simulate the human behavior for the refinement of SLAM results. The feature points extracted from the salient regions have greater importance in optimization process. We add semantic saliency information to the Euroc dataset to generate an open-source saliency SLAM dataset. Comprehensive test results prove that Attention-SLAM outperforms benchmarks such as Direct Sparse Odometry (DSO), ORB-SLAM, and Salient DSO in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and robustness in most test cases.

End-to-end Graph Learning Approach for Cognitive Diagnosis of Student TutorialFulai Yang, Di Wu, Yi He et al.
Cognitive diagnosis (CD) utilizes students' existing studying records to estimate their mastery of unknown knowledge concepts, which is vital for evaluating their learning abilities. Accurate CD is extremely challenging because CD is associated with complex relationships and mechanisms among students, knowledge concepts, studying records, etc. However, existing approaches loosely consider these relationships and mechanisms by a non-end-to-end learning framework, resulting in sub-optimal feature extractions and fusions for CD. Different from them, this paper innovatively proposes an End-to-end Graph Neural Networks-based Cognitive Diagnosis (EGNN-CD) model. EGNN-CD consists of three main parts: knowledge concept network (KCN), graph neural networks-based feature extraction (GNNFE), and cognitive ability prediction (CAP). First, KCN constructs CD-related interaction by comprehensively extracting physical information from students, exercises, and knowledge concepts. Second, a four-channel GNNFE is designed to extract high-order and individual features from the constructed KCN. Finally, CAP employs a multi-layer perceptron to fuse the extracted features to predict students' learning abilities in an end-to-end learning way. With such designs, the feature extractions and fusions are guaranteed to be comprehensive and optimal for CD. Extensive experiments on three real datasets demonstrate that our EGNN-CD achieves significantly higher accuracy than state-of-the-art models in CD.

P3-LOAM: PPP/LiDAR Loosely Coupled SLAM with Accurate Covariance Estimation and Robust RAIM in Urban Canyon EnvironmentTao Li, Ling Pei, Yan Xiang et al.
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has drawn increasing interests in autonomous driving. However, LiDAR-SLAM suffers from accumulating errors which can be significantly mitigated by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Precise Point Positioning (PPP), an accurate GNSS operation mode independent of base stations, gains more popularity in unmanned systems. Considering the features of the two technologies, LiDAR-SLAM and PPP, this paper proposes a SLAM system, namely P3-LOAM (PPP based LiDAR Odometry and Mapping) which couples LiDAR-SLAM and PPP. For better integration, we derive LiDAR-SLAM positioning covariance by using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) Jacobian model, since SVD provides an explicit analytic solution of Iterative Closest Point (ICP), which is a key issue in LiDAR-SLAM. A novel method is then proposed to evaluate the estimated LiDAR-SLAM covariance. In addition, to increase the reliability of GNSS in urban canyon environment, we develop a LiDAR-SLAM assisted GNSS Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) algorithm. Finally, we validate P$^3$-LOAM with UrbanNav, a challenging public dataset in urban canyon environment. Comprehensive test results prove that P3-LOAM outperforms benchmarks such as Single Point Positioning (SPP), PPP, LeGO-LOAM, SPP-LOAM, and loosely coupled navigation system proposed by the publisher of UrbanNav in terms of accuracy and availability.

A Deep Learning Method for Complex Human Activity Recognition Using Virtual Wearable SensorsFanyi Xiao, Ling Pei, Lei Chu et al.
Sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR) is now a research hotspot in multiple application areas. With the rise of smart wearable devices equipped with inertial measurement units (IMUs), researchers begin to utilize IMU data for HAR. By employing machine learning algorithms, early IMU-based research for HAR can achieve accurate classification results on traditional classical HAR datasets, containing only simple and repetitive daily activities. However, these datasets rarely display a rich diversity of information in real-scene. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on deep learning for complex HAR in the real-scene. Specially, in the off-line training stage, the AMASS dataset, containing abundant human poses and virtual IMU data, is innovatively adopted for enhancing the variety and diversity. Moreover, a deep convolutional neural network with an unsupervised penalty is proposed to automatically extract the features of AMASS and improve the robustness. In the on-line testing stage, by leveraging advantages of the transfer learning, we obtain the final result by fine-tuning the partial neural network (optimizing the parameters in the fully-connected layers) using the real IMU data. The experimental results show that the proposed method can surprisingly converge in a few iterations and achieve an accuracy of 91.15% on a real IMU dataset, demonstrating the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method.
CubemapSLAM: A Piecewise-Pinhole Monocular Fisheye SLAM SystemYahui Wang, Shaojun Cai, Shi-Jie Li et al.
We present a real-time feature-based SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) system for fisheye cameras featured by a large field-of-view (FoV). Large FoV cameras are beneficial for large-scale outdoor SLAM applications, because they increase visual overlap between consecutive frames and capture more pixels belonging to the static parts of the environment. However, current feature-based SLAM systems such as PTAM and ORB-SLAM limit their camera model to pinhole only. To compensate for the vacancy, we propose a novel SLAM system with the cubemap model that utilizes the full FoV without introducing distortion from the fisheye lens, which greatly benefits the feature matching pipeline. In the initialization and point triangulation stages, we adopt a unified vector-based representation to efficiently handle matches across multiple faces, and based on this representation we propose and analyze a novel inlier checking metric. In the optimization stage, we design and test a novel multi-pinhole reprojection error metric that outperforms other metrics by a large margin. We evaluate our system comprehensively on a public dataset as well as a self-collected dataset that contains real-world challenging sequences. The results suggest that our system is more robust and accurate than other feature-based fisheye SLAM approaches. The CubemapSLAM system has been released into the public domain.

GPU based Parallel Optimization for Real Time Panoramic Video StitchingChengyao Du, Jingling Yuan, Jiansheng Dong et al.
Panoramic video is a sort of video recorded at the same point of view to record the full scene. With the development of video surveillance and the requirement for 3D converged video surveillance in smart cities, CPU and GPU are required to possess strong processing abilities to make panoramic video. The traditional panoramic products depend on post processing, which results in high power consumption, low stability and unsatisfying performance in real time. In order to solve these problems,we propose a real-time panoramic video stitching framework. The framework we propose mainly consists of three algorithms, LORB image feature extraction algorithm, feature point matching algorithm based on LSH and GPU parallel video stitching algorithm based on CUDA.The experiment results show that the algorithm mentioned can improve the performance in the stages of feature extraction of images stitching and matching, the running speed of which is 11 times than that of the traditional ORB algorithm and 639 times than that of the traditional SIFT algorithm. Based on analyzing the GPU resources occupancy rate of each resolution image stitching, we further propose a stream parallel strategy to maximize the utilization of GPU resources. Compared with the L-ORB algorithm, the efficiency of this strategy is improved by 1.6-2.5 times, and it can make full use of GPU resources. The performance of the system accomplished in the paper is 29.2 times than that of the former embedded one, while the power dissipation is reduced to 10W.
