Infrared: A Meta Bug Detector

Chi Zhang, Yu Wang, Linzhang Wang

The recent breakthroughs in deep learning methods have sparked a wave of interest in learning-based bug detectors. Compared to the traditional static analysis tools, these bug detectors are directly learned from data, thus, easier to create. On the other hand, they are difficult to train, requiring a large amount of data which is not readily available. In this paper, we propose a new approach, called meta bug detection, which offers three crucial advantages over existing learning-based bug detectors: bug-type generic (i.e., capable of catching the types of bugs that are totally unobserved during training), self-explainable (i.e., capable of explaining its own prediction without any external interpretability methods) and sample efficient (i.e., requiring substantially less training data than standard bug detectors). Our extensive evaluation shows our meta bug detector (MBD) is effective in catching a variety of bugs including null pointer dereference, array index out-of-bound, file handle leak, and even data races in concurrent programs; in the process MBD also significantly outperforms several noteworthy baselines including Facebook Infer, a prominent static analysis tool, and FICS, the latest anomaly detection method.

ViStoryBench: Comprehensive Benchmark Suite for Story Visualization

Cailin Zhuang, Ailin Huang, Wei Cheng et al.

Story visualization aims to generate coherent image sequences that faithfully depict a narrative and align with character references. Despite progress in generative models, existing benchmarks are narrow in scope, often limited to short prompts, no character reference, or single-image cases, and fall short of real-world storytelling complexity. This hinders a nuanced understanding of model capabilities and limitations. We present ViStoryBench, a comprehensive benchmark designed to evaluate story visualization models across diverse narrative structures, visual styles, and character settings. The benchmark features richly annotated multi-shot scripts derived from curated stories spanning literature, film, and folklore. Large language models assist in story summarization and script generation, with all outputs verified by humans to ensure coherence and fidelity. Character references are carefully curated to maintain intra-story consistency across varying artistic styles. To enable thorough evaluation, ViStoryBench introduces a set of automated metrics that assess character consistency, style similarity, prompt adherence, aesthetic quality, and generation artifacts such as copy-paste behavior. These metrics are validated through human studies, and used to benchmark a broad range of open-source and commercial models. ViStoryBench offers a high-fidelity, multi-dimensional evaluation suite that facilitates systematic analysis and fosters future progress in visual storytelling.

Tree Representation, Growth Rate of Blockchain and Reward Allocation in Ethereum with Multiple Mining Pools

Quan-Lin Li, Yan-Xia Chang, Chi Zhang

It is interesting but difficult and challenging to study Ethereum with multiple mining pools. One of the main difficulties comes from not only how to represent such a general tree with multiple block branches (or sub-chains) related to the multiple mining pools, but also how to analyze a multi-dimensional stochastic system due to the mining competition among the multiple mining pools. In this paper, we first set up a mathematical representation for the tree with multiple block branches. Then we provide a block classification of Ethereum: Regular blocks (in the main chain), orphan blocks, uncle blocks, stale blocks, and nephew blocks, and give some key probabilities of generating the different types of blocks by applying the law of large numbers. Based on this, we further discuss the growth rate of blockchain, and the reward allocation among the multiple mining pools through applying the renewal reward theorem. Finally, we use some simulation experiments to verify our theoretical results, and show that the approximate computation approaches developed, such as the key probabilities, the long-term growth rate of blockchain, and the long-term reward allocation (rate) among the multiple mining pools, can have a faster convergence. Therefore, we provide a powerful tool for observing and understanding the influence of the selfish mining attacks on the performance of Ethereum with multiple mining pools. We believe that the methodology and results developed in this paper will shed light on the study of Ethereum with multiple mining pools, such that a series of promising research can be inspired potentially.

One Model to Serve All: Star Topology Adaptive Recommender for Multi-Domain CTR Prediction

Xiang-Rong Sheng, Liqin Zhao, Guorui Zhou et al.

Traditional industrial recommenders are usually trained on a single business domain and then serve for this domain. However, in large commercial platforms, it is often the case that the recommenders need to make click-through rate (CTR) predictions for multiple business domains. Different domains have overlapping user groups and items. Thus, there exist commonalities. Since the specific user groups have disparity and the user behaviors may change in various business domains, there also have distinctions. The distinctions result in domain-specific data distributions, making it hard for a single shared model to work well on all domains. To learn an effective and efficient CTR model to handle multiple domains simultaneously, we present Star Topology Adaptive Recommender (STAR). Concretely, STAR has the star topology, which consists of the shared centered parameters and domain-specific parameters. The shared parameters are applied to learn commonalities of all domains, and the domain-specific parameters capture domain distinction for more refined prediction. Given requests from different business domains, STAR can adapt its parameters conditioned on the domain characteristics. The experimental result from production data validates the superiority of the proposed STAR model. Since 2020, STAR has been deployed in the display advertising system of Alibaba, obtaining averaging 8.0% improvement on CTR and 6.0% on RPM (Revenue Per Mille).

Question Retrieval for Community-based Question Answering via Heterogeneous Network Integration Learning

Zheqian Chen, Chi Zhang, Zhou Zhao et al.

Community based question answering platforms have attracted substantial users to share knowledge and learn from each other. As the rapid enlargement of CQA platforms, quantities of overlapped questions emerge, which makes users confounded to select a proper reference. It is urgent for us to take effective automated algorithms to reuse historical questions with corresponding answers. In this paper we focus on the problem with question retrieval, which aims to match historical questions that are relevant or semantically equivalent to resolve one s query directly. The challenges in this task are the lexical gaps between questions for the word ambiguity and word mismatch problem. Furthermore, limited words in queried sentences cause sparsity of word features. To alleviate these challenges, we propose a novel framework named HNIL which encodes not only the question contents but also the askers social interactions to enhance the question embedding performance. More specifically, we apply random walk based learning method with recurrent neural network to match the similarities between askers question and historical questions proposed by other users. Extensive experiments on a large scale dataset from a real world CQA site show that employing the heterogeneous social network information outperforms the other state of the art solutions in this task.
