DDSupport: Language Learning Support System that Displays Differences and Distances from Model SpeechKazuki Kawamura, Jun Rekimoto
When beginners learn to speak a non-native language, it is difficult for them to judge for themselves whether they are speaking well. Therefore, computer-assisted pronunciation training systems are used to detect learner mispronunciations. These systems typically compare the user's speech with that of a specific native speaker as a model in units of rhythm, phonemes, or words and calculate the differences. However, they require extensive speech data with detailed annotations or can only compare with one specific native speaker. To overcome these problems, we propose a new language learning support system that calculates speech scores and detects mispronunciations by beginners based on a small amount of unannotated speech data without comparison to a specific person. The proposed system uses deep learning--based speech processing to display the pronunciation score of the learner's speech and the difference/distance between the learner's and a group of models' pronunciation in an intuitively visual manner. Learners can gradually improve their pronunciation by eliminating differences and shortening the distance from the model until they become sufficiently proficient. Furthermore, since the pronunciation score and difference/distance are not calculated compared to specific sentences of a particular model, users are free to study the sentences they wish to study. We also built an application to help non-native speakers learn English and confirmed that it can improve users' speech intelligibility.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for extracting information from HTML tables with similar contents but with a different structure. We aim to integrate multiple HTML tables into a single table for retrieval of information containing in various Web pages. The method is designed by extending tree-structured LSTM, the neural network for tree-structured data, in order to extract information that is both linguistic and structural information of HTML data. We evaluate the proposed method through experiments using real data published on the WWW.

PROTEA: Offline Evaluation and Iterative Refinement for Multi-Agent LLM WorkflowsKazuki Kawamura, Satoshi Waki, Kei Tateno
Multi-agent LLM workflows -- systems composed of multiple role-specific LLM calls -- often outperform single-prompt baselines, but they remain difficult to debug and refine. Failures can originate from subtle errors in intermediate outputs that propagate to downstream nodes, requiring developers to inspect long traces and infer which agent to modify. We present PROTEA, a unified interface for offline, test-driven improvement of multi-agent workflows. PROTEA executes a workflow, scores intermediate node outputs with configurable rubrics, and overlays per-node states and rationales on the workflow graph to localize likely bottlenecks. To support complex systems where final-answer references are the primary supervision, PROTEA performs backward node evaluation: it generates candidate node-level expectations from final-answer references and graph context, then compares them with observed node outputs. For selected nodes, PROTEA presents targeted prompt revisions as editable before/after comparisons, then automatically reruns and re-evaluates the workflow to show output changes and score trajectories within the same interface. In two production-adjacent workflows, PROTEA improved document-inspection accuracy from 64.3% to 83.9% and recommendation Hit@5 from 0.30 to 0.38. In a formative study with six experienced LLM developers, participants valued graph-level localization, per-node rationales, and editable before/after prompt revisions.

Automated decision-making algorithms drive applications such as recommendation systems and search engines. These algorithms often rely on off-policy contextual bandits or off-policy learning (OPL). Conventionally, OPL selects actions that maximize the expected reward from an existing action set. However, in many real-world scenarios, actions, such as news articles or video content, change continuously, and the action space evolves over time after data collection. We define actions introduced after deploying the logging policy as new actions and focus on OPL with new actions. Existing OPL methods identify optimal actions from the existing set effectively but cannot learn and select new actions because no relevant data are logged. To address this limitation, we propose a new OPL method that leverages action features. We first introduce the Local Combination PseudoInverse (LCPI) estimator for the policy gradient, generalizing the PseudoInverse estimator initially proposed for off-policy evaluation of slate bandits. LCPI controls the trade-off between reward-modeling condition and the condition for data collection regarding the action features, capturing the interaction effects among different dimensions of action features. Furthermore, we propose a generalized algorithm called Policy Optimization for Effective New Actions (PONA), which integrates LCPI, a component specialized for new action selection, with Doubly Robust (DR), which excels at learning within existing actions. We define PONA as a weighted sum of the LCPI and DR estimators, optimizing both the selection of existing and new actions, and allowing the proportion of new action selections to be adjusted by the weight parameter. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that PONA efficiently selects new actions while maintaining the overall policy performance as opposed to most existing methods that cannot select new actions.

Off-Policy Evaluation for Ranking Policies under Deterministic Logging PoliciesKoichi Tanaka, Kazuki Kawamura, Takanori Muroi et al.
Off-Policy Evaluation (OPE) is an important practical problem in algorithmic ranking systems, where the goal is to estimate the expected performance of a new ranking policy using only offline logged data collected under a different, logging policy. Existing estimators, such as the ranking-wise and position-wise inverse propensity score (IPS) estimators, require the data collection policy to be sufficiently stochastic and suffer from severe bias when the logging policy is fully deterministic. In this paper, we propose novel estimators, Click-based Inverse Propensity Score (CIPS), exploiting the intrinsic stochasticity of user click behavior to address this challenge. Unlike existing methods that rely on the stochasticity of the logging policy, our approach uses click probability as a new form of importance weighting, enabling low-bias OPE even under deterministic logging policies where existing methods incur substantial bias. We provide theoretical analyses of the bias and variance properties of the proposed estimators and show, through synthetic and real-world experiments, that our estimators achieve significantly lower bias compared to strong baselines, for a range of experimental settings with completely deterministic logging policies.

FastPerson: Enhancing Video Learning through Effective Video Summarization that Preserves Linguistic and Visual ContextsKazuki Kawamura, Jun Rekimoto
Quickly understanding lengthy lecture videos is essential for learners with limited time and interest in various topics to improve their learning efficiency. To this end, video summarization has been actively researched to enable users to view only important scenes from a video. However, these studies focus on either the visual or audio information of a video and extract important segments in the video. Therefore, there is a risk of missing important information when both the teacher's speech and visual information on the blackboard or slides are important, such as in a lecture video. To tackle this issue, we propose FastPerson, a video summarization approach that considers both the visual and auditory information in lecture videos. FastPerson creates summary videos by utilizing audio transcriptions along with on-screen images and text, minimizing the risk of overlooking crucial information for learners. Further, it provides a feature that allows learners to switch between the summary and original videos for each chapter of the video, enabling them to adjust the pace of learning based on their interests and level of understanding. We conducted an evaluation with 40 participants to assess the effectiveness of our method and confirmed that it reduced viewing time by 53\% at the same level of comprehension as that when using traditional video playback methods.

AIx Speed: Playback Speed Optimization Using Listening Comprehension of Speech Recognition ModelsKazuki Kawamura, Jun Rekimoto
Since humans can listen to audio and watch videos at faster speeds than actually observed, we often listen to or watch these pieces of content at higher playback speeds to increase the time efficiency of content comprehension. To further utilize this capability, systems that automatically adjust the playback speed according to the user's condition and the type of content to assist in more efficient comprehension of time-series content have been developed. However, there is still room for these systems to further extend human speed-listening ability by generating speech with playback speed optimized for even finer time units and providing it to humans. In this study, we determine whether humans can hear the optimized speech and propose a system that automatically adjusts playback speed at units as small as phonemes while ensuring speech intelligibility. The system uses the speech recognizer score as a proxy for how well a human can hear a certain unit of speech and maximizes the speech playback speed to the extent that a human can hear. This method can be used to produce fast but intelligible speech. In the evaluation experiment, we compared the speech played back at a constant fast speed and the flexibly speed-up speech generated by the proposed method in a blind test and confirmed that the proposed method produced speech that was easier to listen to.

ManzaiSet: A Multimodal Dataset of Viewer Responses to Japanese Manzai ComedyKazuki Kawamura, Kengo Nakai, Jun Rekimoto
We present ManzaiSet, the first large scale multimodal dataset of viewer responses to Japanese manzai comedy, capturing facial videos and audio from 241 participants watching up to 10 professional performances in randomized order (94.6 percent watched >= 8; analyses focus on n=228). This addresses the Western centric bias in affective computing. Three key findings emerge: (1) k means clustering identified three distinct viewer types: High and Stable Appreciators (72.8 percent, n=166), Low and Variable Decliners (13.2 percent, n=30), and Variable Improvers (14.0 percent, n=32), with heterogeneity of variance (Brown Forsythe p < 0.001); (2) individual level analysis revealed a positive viewing order effect (mean slope = 0.488, t(227) = 5.42, p < 0.001, permutation p < 0.001), contradicting fatigue hypotheses; (3) automated humor classification (77 instances, 131 labels) plus viewer level response modeling found no type wise differences after FDR correction. The dataset enables culturally aware emotion AI development and personalized entertainment systems tailored to non Western contexts.

Counterfactual Reciprocal Recommender Systems for User-to-User MatchingKazuki Kawamura, Takuma Udagawa, Kei Tateno
Reciprocal recommender systems (RRS) in dating, gaming, and talent platforms require mutual acceptance for a match. Logged data, however, over-represents popular profiles due to past exposure policies, creating feedback loops that skew learning and fairness. We introduce Counterfactual Reciprocal Recommender Systems (CFRR), a causal framework to mitigate this bias. CFRR uses inverse propensity scored, self-normalized objectives. Experiments show CFRR improves NDCG@10 by up to 3.5% (e.g., from 0.459 to 0.475 on DBLP, from 0.299 to 0.307 on Synthetic), increases long-tail user coverage by up to 51% (from 0.504 to 0.763 on Synthetic), and reduces Gini exposure inequality by up to 24% (from 0.708 to 0.535 on Synthetic). CFRR offers a promising approach for more accurate and fair user-to-user matching.

Off-Policy Evaluation and Learning for the Future under Non-StationarityTatsuhiro Shimizu, Kazuki Kawamura, Takanori Muroi et al.
We study the novel problem of future off-policy evaluation (F-OPE) and learning (F-OPL) for estimating and optimizing the future value of policies in non-stationary environments, where distributions vary over time. In e-commerce recommendations, for instance, our goal is often to estimate and optimize the policy value for the upcoming month using data collected by an old policy in the previous month. A critical challenge is that data related to the future environment is not observed in the historical data. Existing methods assume stationarity or depend on restrictive reward-modeling assumptions, leading to significant bias. To address these limitations, we propose a novel estimator named \textit{\textbf{O}ff-\textbf{P}olicy Estimator for the \textbf{F}uture \textbf{V}alue (\textbf{\textit{OPFV}})}, designed for accurately estimating policy values at any future time point. The key feature of OPFV is its ability to leverage the useful structure within time-series data. While future data might not be present in the historical log, we can leverage, for example, seasonal, weekly, or holiday effects that are consistent in both the historical and future data. Our estimator is the first to exploit these time-related structures via a new type of importance weighting, enabling effective F-OPE. Theoretical analysis identifies the conditions under which OPFV becomes low-bias. In addition, we extend our estimator to develop a new policy-gradient method to proactively learn a good future policy using only historical data. Empirical results show that our methods substantially outperform existing methods in estimating and optimizing the future policy value under non-stationarity for various experimental setups.

SakugaFlow: A Stagewise Illustration Framework Emulating the Human Drawing Process and Providing Interactive Tutoring for Novice Drawing SkillsKazuki Kawamura, Jun Rekimoto
While current AI illustration tools can generate high-quality images from text prompts, they rarely reveal the step-by-step procedure that human artists follow. We present SakugaFlow, a four-stage pipeline that pairs diffusion-based image generation with a large-language-model tutor. At each stage, novices receive real-time feedback on anatomy, perspective, and composition, revise any step non-linearly, and branch alternative versions. By exposing intermediate outputs and embedding pedagogical dialogue, SakugaFlow turns a black-box generator into a scaffolded learning environment that supports both creative exploration and skills acquisition.
