CLIPA-v2: Scaling CLIP Training with 81.1% Zero-shot ImageNet Accuracy within a \$10,000 Budget; An Extra \$4,000 Unlocks 81.8% AccuracyXianhang Li, Zeyu Wang, Cihang Xie
The recent work CLIPA presents an inverse scaling law for CLIP training -- whereby the larger the image/text encoders used, the shorter the sequence length of image/text tokens that can be applied in training. This finding enables us to train high-performance CLIP models with significantly reduced computations. Building upon this work, we hereby present CLIPA-v2 with two key contributions. Technically, we find this inverse scaling law is also applicable in the finetuning stage, enabling further reduction in computational needs. Empirically, we explore CLIPA at scale, extending the experiments up to the H/14 model with ~13B image-text pairs seen during training. Our results are exciting -- by only allocating a budget of \$10,000, our CLIP model achieves an impressive zero-shot ImageNet accuracy of 81.1%, surpassing the prior best CLIP model (from OpenCLIP, 80.1%) by 1.0% and meanwhile reducing the computational cost by ~39X. Moreover, with an additional investment of $4,000, we can further elevate the zero-shot ImageNet accuracy to 81.8%. Our code and models are available at https://github.com/UCSC-VLAA/CLIPA.
Sculpting Holistic 3D Representation in Contrastive Language-Image-3D Pre-trainingYipeng Gao, Zeyu Wang, Wei-Shi Zheng et al.
Contrastive learning has emerged as a promising paradigm for 3D open-world understanding, i.e., aligning point cloud representation to image and text embedding space individually. In this paper, we introduce MixCon3D, a simple yet effective method aiming to sculpt holistic 3D representation in contrastive language-image-3D pre-training. In contrast to point cloud only, we develop the 3D object-level representation from complementary perspectives, e.g., multi-view rendered images with the point cloud. Then, MixCon3D performs language-3D contrastive learning, comprehensively depicting real-world 3D objects and bolstering text alignment. Additionally, we pioneer the first thorough investigation of various training recipes for the 3D contrastive learning paradigm, building a solid baseline with improved performance. Extensive experiments conducted on three representative benchmarks reveal that our method significantly improves over the baseline, surpassing the previous state-of-the-art performance on the challenging 1,156-category Objaverse-LVIS dataset by 5.7%. The versatility of MixCon3D is showcased in applications such as text-to-3D retrieval and point cloud captioning, further evidencing its efficacy in diverse scenarios. The code is available at https://github.com/UCSC-VLAA/MixCon3D.

HeadEvolver: Text to Head Avatars via Expressive and Attribute-Preserving Mesh DeformationDuotun Wang, Hengyu Meng, Zeyu Cai et al.
Current text-to-avatar methods often rely on implicit representations (e.g., NeRF, SDF, and DMTet), leading to 3D content that artists cannot easily edit and animate in graphics software. This paper introduces a novel framework for generating stylized head avatars from text guidance, which leverages locally learnable mesh deformation and 2D diffusion priors to achieve high-quality digital assets for attribute-preserving manipulation. Given a template mesh, our method represents mesh deformation with per-face Jacobians and adaptively modulates local deformation using a learnable vector field. This vector field enables anisotropic scaling while preserving the rotation of vertices, which can better express identity and geometric details. We employ landmark- and contour-based regularization terms to balance the expressiveness and plausibility of generated avatars from multiple views without relying on any specific shape prior. Our framework can generate realistic shapes and textures that can be further edited via text, while supporting seamless editing using the preserved attributes from the template mesh, such as 3DMM parameters, blendshapes, and UV coordinates. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework can generate diverse and expressive head avatars with high-quality meshes that artists can easily manipulate in graphics software, facilitating downstream applications such as efficient asset creation and animation with preserved attributes.
