Control Parameters Considered Harmful: Detecting Range Specification Bugs in Drone Configuration Modules via Learning-Guided Search

Ruidong Han, Chao Yang, Siqi Ma et al.

In order to support a variety of missions and deal with different flight environments, drone control programs typically provide configurable control parameters. However, such a flexibility introduces vulnerabilities. One such vulnerability, referred to as range specification bugs, has been recently identified. The vulnerability originates from the fact that even though each individual parameter receives a value in the recommended value range, certain combinations of parameter values may affect the drone physical stability. In this paper we develop a novel learning-guided search system to find such combinations, that we refer to as incorrect configurations. Our system applies metaheuristic search algorithms mutating configurations to detect the configuration parameters that have values driving the drone to unstable physical states. To guide the mutations, our system leverages a machine learning predictor as the fitness evaluator. Finally, by utilizing multi-objective optimization, our system returns the feasible ranges based on the mutation search results. Because in our system the mutations are guided by a predictor, evaluating the parameter configurations does not require realistic/simulation executions. Therefore, our system supports a comprehensive and yet efficient detection of incorrect configurations. We have carried out an experimental evaluation of our system. The evaluation results show that the system successfully reports potentially incorrect configurations, of which over 85% lead to actual unstable physical states.

A user model for JND-based video quality assessment: theory and applications

Haiqiang Wang, Ioannis Katsavounidis, Xinfeng Zhang et al.

The video quality assessment (VQA) technology has attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to an increasing demand of video streaming services. Existing VQA methods are designed to predict video quality in terms of the mean opinion score (MOS) calibrated by humans in subjective experiments. However, they cannot predict the satisfied user ratio (SUR) of an aggregated viewer group. Furthermore, they provide little guidance to video coding parameter selection, e.g. the Quantization Parameter (QP) of a set of consecutive frames, in practical video streaming services. To overcome these shortcomings, the just-noticeable-difference (JND) based VQA methodology has been proposed as an alternative. It is observed experimentally that the JND location is a normally distributed random variable. In this work, we explain this distribution by proposing a user model that takes both subject variabilities and content variabilities into account. This model is built upon user's capability to discern the quality difference between video clips encoded with different QPs. Moreover, it analyzes video content characteristics to account for inter-content variability. The proposed user model is validated on the data collected in the VideoSet. It is demonstrated that the model is flexible to predict SUR distribution of a specific user group.

A JND-based Video Quality Assessment Model and Its Application

Haiqiang Wang, Xinfeng Zhang, Chao Yang et al.

Based on the Just-Noticeable-Difference (JND) criterion, a subjective video quality assessment (VQA) dataset, called the VideoSet, was constructed recently. In this work, we propose a JND-based VQA model using a probabilistic framework to analyze and clean collected subjective test data. While most traditional VQA models focus on content variability, our proposed VQA model takes both subject and content variabilities into account. The model parameters used to describe subject and content variabilities are jointly optimized by solving a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem. As an application, the new subjective VQA model is used to filter out unreliable video quality scores collected in the VideoSet. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Symmetry-aware Depth Estimation using Deep Neural Networks

Guilin Liu, Chao Yang, Zimo Li et al.

Due to the abundance of 2D product images from the Internet, developing efficient and scalable algorithms to recover the missing depth information is central to many applications. Recent works have addressed the single-view depth estimation problem by utilizing convolutional neural networks. In this paper, we show that exploring symmetry information, which is ubiquitous in man made objects, can significantly boost the quality of such depth predictions. Specifically, we propose a new convolutional neural network architecture to first estimate dense symmetric correspondences in a product image and then propose an optimization which utilizes this information explicitly to significantly improve the quality of single-view depth estimations. We have evaluated our approach extensively, and experimental results show that this approach outperforms state-of-the-art depth estimation techniques.

Feature selection for classification with class-separability strategy and data envelopment analysis

Yishi Zhang, Chao Yang, Anrong Yang et al.

In this paper, a novel feature selection method is presented, which is based on Class-Separability (CS) strategy and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). To better capture the relationship between features and the class, class labels are separated into individual variables and relevance and redundancy are explicitly handled on each class label. Super-efficiency DEA is employed to evaluate and rank features via their conditional dependence scores on all class labels, and the feature with maximum super-efficiency score is then added in the conditioning set for conditional dependence estimation in the next iteration, in such a way as to iteratively select features and get the final selected features. Eventually, experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed method comparing with four state-of-the-art methods from the viewpoint of classification accuracy. Empirical results verify the feasibility and the superiority of proposed feature selection method.
