A Robust Attentional Framework for License Plate Recognition in the Wild

Linjiang Zhang, Peng Wang, Hui Li et al.

Recognizing car license plates in natural scene images is an important yet still challenging task in realistic applications. Many existing approaches perform well for license plates collected under constrained conditions, eg, shooting in frontal and horizontal view-angles and under good lighting conditions. However, their performance drops significantly in an unconstrained environment that features rotation, distortion, occlusion, blurring, shading or extreme dark or bright conditions. In this work, we propose a robust framework for license plate recognition in the wild. It is composed of a tailored CycleGAN model for license plate image generation and an elaborate designed image-to-sequence network for plate recognition. On one hand, the CycleGAN based plate generation engine alleviates the exhausting human annotation work. Massive amount of training data can be obtained with a more balanced character distribution and various shooting conditions, which helps to boost the recognition accuracy to a large extent. On the other hand, the 2D attentional based license plate recognizer with an Xception-based CNN encoder is capable of recognizing license plates with different patterns under various scenarios accurately and robustly. Without using any heuristics rule or post-processing, our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on four public datasets, which demonstrates the generality and robustness of our framework. Moreover, we released a new license plate dataset, named "CLPD", with 1200 images from all 31 provinces in mainland China. The dataset can be available from: https://github.com/wangpengnorman/CLPD_dataset.

Structured Multimodal Attentions for TextVQA

Chenyu Gao, Qi Zhu, Peng Wang et al.

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end structured multimodal attention (SMA) neural network to mainly solve the first two issues above. SMA first uses a structural graph representation to encode the object-object, object-text and text-text relationships appearing in the image, and then designs a multimodal graph attention network to reason over it. Finally, the outputs from the above modules are processed by a global-local attentional answering module to produce an answer splicing together tokens from both OCR and general vocabulary iteratively by following M4C. Our proposed model outperforms the SoTA models on TextVQA dataset and two tasks of ST-VQA dataset among all models except pre-training based TAP. Demonstrating strong reasoning ability, it also won first place in TextVQA Challenge 2020. We extensively test different OCR methods on several reasoning models and investigate the impact of gradually increased OCR performance on TextVQA benchmark. With better OCR results, different models share dramatic improvement over the VQA accuracy, but our model benefits most blessed by strong textual-visual reasoning ability. To grant our method an upper bound and make a fair testing base available for further works, we also provide human-annotated ground-truth OCR annotations for the TextVQA dataset, which were not given in the original release. The code and ground-truth OCR annotations for the TextVQA dataset are available at https://github.com/ChenyuGAO-CS/SMA

Kronecker Mask and Interpretive Prompts are Language-Action Video Learners

Jingyi Yang, Zitong Yu, Xiuming Ni et al.

Contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP) has significantly advanced image-based vision learning. A pressing topic subsequently arises: how can we effectively adapt CLIP to the video domain? Recent studies have focused on adjusting either the textual or visual branch of CLIP for action recognition. However, we argue that adaptations of both branches are crucial. In this paper, we propose \textbf{CLAVER}: a \textbf{C}ontrastive \textbf{L}anguage-\textbf{A}ction \textbf{V}ideo Learn\textbf{er}, designed to shift CLIP's focus from the alignment of static visual objects and concrete nouns to the alignment of dynamic action behaviors and abstract verbs. Specifically, we introduce a novel Kronecker mask attention for temporal modeling. Our tailored Kronecker mask offers three benefits 1) it expands the temporal receptive field for each token, 2) it serves as an effective spatiotemporal heterogeneity inductive bias, mitigating the issue of spatiotemporal homogenization, and 3) it can be seamlessly plugged into transformer-based models. Regarding the textual branch, we leverage large language models to generate diverse, sentence-level and semantically rich interpretive prompts of actions, which shift the model's focus towards the verb comprehension. Extensive experiments on various benchmarks and learning scenarios demonstrate the superiority and generality of our approach.

Progressive Sample Mining and Representation Learning for One-Shot Person Re-identification with Adversarial Samples

Hui Li, Jimin Xiao, Mingjie Sun et al.

In this paper, we aim to tackle the one-shot person re-identification problem where only one image is labelled for each person, while other images are unlabelled. This task is challenging due to the lack of sufficient labelled training data. To tackle this problem, we propose to iteratively guess pseudo labels for the unlabeled image samples, which are later used to update the re-identification model together with the labelled samples. A new sampling mechanism is designed to select unlabeled samples to pseudo labelled samples based on the distance matrix, and to form a training triplet batch including both labelled samples and pseudo labelled samples. We also design an HSoften-Triplet-Loss to soften the negative impact of the incorrect pseudo label, considering the unreliable nature of pseudo labelled samples. Finally, we deploy an adversarial learning method to expand the image samples to different camera views. Our experiments show that our framework achieves a new state-of-the-art one-shot Re-ID performance on Market-1501 (mAP 42.7%) and DukeMTMC-Reid dataset (mAP 40.3%). Code will be available soon.

A Holistic Representation Guided Attention Network for Scene Text Recognition

Lu Yang, Fan Dang, Peng Wang et al.

Reading irregular scene text of arbitrary shape in natural images is still a challenging problem, despite the progress made recently. Many existing approaches incorporate sophisticated network structures to handle various shapes, use extra annotations for stronger supervision, or employ hard-to-train recurrent neural networks for sequence modeling. In this work, we propose a simple yet strong approach for scene text recognition. With no need to convert input images to sequence representations, we directly connect two-dimensional CNN features to an attention-based sequence decoder which guided by holistic representation. The holistic representation can guide the attention-based decoder focus on more accurate area. As no recurrent module is adopted, our model can be trained in parallel. It achieves 1.5x to 9.4x acceleration to backward pass and 1.3x to 7.9x acceleration to forward pass, compared with the RNN counterparts. The proposed model is trained with only word-level annotations. With this simple design, our method achieves state-of-the-art or competitive recognition performance on the evaluated regular and irregular scene text benchmark datasets.
