AvatarPose: Avatar-guided 3D Pose Estimation of Close Human Interaction from Sparse Multi-view VideosFeichi Lu, Zijian Dong, Jie Song et al.
Despite progress in human motion capture, existing multi-view methods often face challenges in estimating the 3D pose and shape of multiple closely interacting people. This difficulty arises from reliance on accurate 2D joint estimations, which are hard to obtain due to occlusions and body contact when people are in close interaction. To address this, we propose a novel method leveraging the personalized implicit neural avatar of each individual as a prior, which significantly improves the robustness and precision of this challenging pose estimation task. Concretely, the avatars are efficiently reconstructed via layered volume rendering from sparse multi-view videos. The reconstructed avatar prior allows for the direct optimization of 3D poses based on color and silhouette rendering loss, bypassing the issues associated with noisy 2D detections. To handle interpenetration, we propose a collision loss on the overlapping shape regions of avatars to add penetration constraints. Moreover, both 3D poses and avatars are optimized in an alternating manner. Our experimental results demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on several public datasets.
Distribution-Aware Graph Representation Learning for Transient Stability Assessment of Power SystemKaixuan Chen, Shunyu Liu, Na Yu et al.
The real-time transient stability assessment (TSA) plays a critical role in the secure operation of the power system. Although the classic numerical integration method, \textit{i.e.} time-domain simulation (TDS), has been widely used in industry practice, it is inevitably trapped in a high computational complexity due to the high latitude sophistication of the power system. In this work, a data-driven power system estimation method is proposed to quickly predict the stability of the power system before TDS reaches the end of simulating time windows, which can reduce the average simulation time of stability assessment without loss of accuracy. As the topology of the power system is in the form of graph structure, graph neural network based representation learning is naturally suitable for learning the status of the power system. Motivated by observing the distribution information of crucial active power and reactive power on the power system's bus nodes, we thus propose a distribution-aware learning~(DAL) module to explore an informative graph representation vector for describing the status of a power system. Then, TSA is re-defined as a binary classification task, and the stability of the system is determined directly from the resulting graph representation without numerical integration. Finally, we apply our method to the online TSA task. The case studies on the IEEE 39-bus system and Polish 2383-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

GraspXL: Generating Grasping Motions for Diverse Objects at ScaleHui Zhang, Sammy Christen, Zicong Fan et al.
Human hands possess the dexterity to interact with diverse objects such as grasping specific parts of the objects and/or approaching them from desired directions. More importantly, humans can grasp objects of any shape without object-specific skills. Recent works synthesize grasping motions following single objectives such as a desired approach heading direction or a grasping area. Moreover, they usually rely on expensive 3D hand-object data during training and inference, which limits their capability to synthesize grasping motions for unseen objects at scale. In this paper, we unify the generation of hand-object grasping motions across multiple motion objectives, diverse object shapes and dexterous hand morphologies in a policy learning framework GraspXL. The objectives are composed of the graspable area, heading direction during approach, wrist rotation, and hand position. Without requiring any 3D hand-object interaction data, our policy trained with 58 objects can robustly synthesize diverse grasping motions for more than 500k unseen objects with a success rate of 82.2%. At the same time, the policy adheres to objectives, which enables the generation of diverse grasps per object. Moreover, we show that our framework can be deployed to different dexterous hands and work with reconstructed or generated objects. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate our method to show the efficacy of our approach. Our model, code, and the large-scale generated motions are available at https://eth-ait.github.io/graspxl/.
4D-DRESS: A 4D Dataset of Real-world Human Clothing with Semantic AnnotationsWenbo Wang, Hsuan-I Ho, Chen Guo et al.
The studies of human clothing for digital avatars have predominantly relied on synthetic datasets. While easy to collect, synthetic data often fall short in realism and fail to capture authentic clothing dynamics. Addressing this gap, we introduce 4D-DRESS, the first real-world 4D dataset advancing human clothing research with its high-quality 4D textured scans and garment meshes. 4D-DRESS captures 64 outfits in 520 human motion sequences, amounting to 78k textured scans. Creating a real-world clothing dataset is challenging, particularly in annotating and segmenting the extensive and complex 4D human scans. To address this, we develop a semi-automatic 4D human parsing pipeline. We efficiently combine a human-in-the-loop process with automation to accurately label 4D scans in diverse garments and body movements. Leveraging precise annotations and high-quality garment meshes, we establish several benchmarks for clothing simulation and reconstruction. 4D-DRESS offers realistic and challenging data that complements synthetic sources, paving the way for advancements in research of lifelike human clothing. Powerformer: A Section-adaptive Transformer for Power Flow AdjustmentKaixuan Chen, Wei Luo, Shunyu Liu et al.
In this paper, we present a novel transformer architecture tailored for learning robust power system state representations, which strives to optimize power dispatch for the power flow adjustment across different transmission sections. Specifically, our proposed approach, named Powerformer, develops a dedicated section-adaptive attention mechanism, separating itself from the self-attention used in conventional transformers. This mechanism effectively integrates power system states with transmission section information, which facilitates the development of robust state representations. Furthermore, by considering the graph topology of power system and the electrical attributes of bus nodes, we introduce two customized strategies to further enhance the expressiveness: graph neural network propagation and multi-factor attention mechanism. Extensive evaluations are conducted on three power system scenarios, including the IEEE 118-bus system, a realistic 300-bus system in China, and a large-scale European system with 9241 buses, where Powerformer demonstrates its superior performance over several baseline methods.

Regressor-Guided Image Editing Regulates Emotional Response to Reduce Online EngagementChristoph Gebhardt, Robin Willardt, Seyedmorteza Sadat et al.
Emotions are known to mediate the relationship between users' content consumption and their online engagement, with heightened emotional intensity leading to increased engagement. Building on this insight, we propose three regressor-guided image editing approaches aimed at diminishing the emotional impact of images. These include (i) a parameter optimization approach based on global image transformations known to influence emotions, (ii) an optimization approach targeting the style latent space of a generative adversarial network, and (iii) a diffusion-based approach employing classifier guidance and classifier-free guidance. Our findings demonstrate that approaches can effectively alter the emotional properties of images while maintaining high visual quality. Optimization-based methods primarily adjust low-level properties like color hues and brightness, whereas the diffusion-based approach introduces semantic changes, such as altering appearance or facial expressions. Notably, results from a behavioral study reveal that only the diffusion-based approach successfully elicits changes in viewers' emotional responses while preserving high perceived image quality. In future work, we will investigate the impact of these image adaptations on internet user behavior.

FunGrasp: Functional Grasping for Diverse Dexterous HandsLinyi Huang, Hui Zhang, Zijian Wu et al.
Functional grasping is essential for humans to perform specific tasks, such as grasping scissors by the finger holes to cut materials or by the blade to safely hand them over. Enabling dexterous robot hands with functional grasping capabilities is crucial for their deployment to accomplish diverse real-world tasks. Recent research in dexterous grasping, however, often focuses on power grasps while overlooking task- and object-specific functional grasping poses. In this paper, we introduce FunGrasp, a system that enables functional dexterous grasping across various robot hands and performs one-shot transfer to unseen objects. Given a single RGBD image of functional human grasping, our system estimates the hand pose and transfers it to different robotic hands via a human-to-robot (H2R) grasp retargeting module. Guided by the retargeted grasping poses, a policy is trained through reinforcement learning in simulation for dynamic grasping control. To achieve robust sim-to-real transfer, we employ several techniques including privileged learning, system identification, domain randomization, and gravity compensation. In our experiments, we demonstrate that our system enables diverse functional grasping of unseen objects using single RGBD images, and can be successfully deployed across various dexterous robot hands. The significance of the components is validated through comprehensive ablation studies. Project page: https://hly-123.github.io/FunGrasp/ .
