MIPI 2022 Challenge on Under-Display Camera Image Restoration: Methods and ResultsRuicheng Feng, Chongyi Li, Shangchen Zhou et al.
Developing and integrating advanced image sensors with novel algorithms in camera systems are prevalent with the increasing demand for computational photography and imaging on mobile platforms. However, the lack of high-quality data for research and the rare opportunity for in-depth exchange of views from industry and academia constrain the development of mobile intelligent photography and imaging (MIPI). To bridge the gap, we introduce the first MIPI challenge including five tracks focusing on novel image sensors and imaging algorithms. In this paper, we summarize and review the Under-Display Camera (UDC) Image Restoration track on MIPI 2022. In total, 167 participants were successfully registered, and 19 teams submitted results in the final testing phase. Assessing Reusability of Deep Learning-Based Monotherapy Drug Response Prediction Models Trained with Omics DataJamie C. Overbeek, Alexander Partin, Thomas S. Brettin et al.
Cancer drug response prediction (DRP) models present a promising approach towards precision oncology, tailoring treatments to individual patient profiles. While deep learning (DL) methods have shown great potential in this area, models that can be successfully translated into clinical practice and shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying treatment response will likely emerge from collaborative research efforts. This highlights the need for reusable and adaptable models that can be improved and tested by the wider scientific community. In this study, we present a scoring system for assessing the reusability of prediction DRP models, and apply it to 17 peer-reviewed DL-based DRP models. As part of the IMPROVE (Innovative Methodologies and New Data for Predictive Oncology Model Evaluation) project, which aims to develop methods for systematic evaluation and comparison DL models across scientific domains, we analyzed these 17 DRP models focusing on three key categories: software environment, code modularity, and data availability and preprocessing. While not the primary focus, we also attempted to reproduce key performance metrics to verify model behavior and adaptability. Our assessment of 17 DRP models reveals both strengths and shortcomings in model reusability. To promote rigorous practices and open-source sharing, we offer recommendations for developing and sharing prediction models. Following these recommendations can address many of the issues identified in this study, improving model reusability without adding significant burdens on researchers. This work offers the first comprehensive assessment of reusability and reproducibility across diverse DRP models, providing insights into current model sharing practices and promoting standards within the DRP and broader AI-enabled scientific research community.
Reversed Image Signal Processing and RAW Reconstruction. AIM 2022 Challenge ReportMarcos V. Conde, Radu Timofte, Yibin Huang et al.
Cameras capture sensor RAW images and transform them into pleasant RGB images, suitable for the human eyes, using their integrated Image Signal Processor (ISP). Numerous low-level vision tasks operate in the RAW domain (e.g. image denoising, white balance) due to its linear relationship with the scene irradiance, wide-range of information at 12bits, and sensor designs. Despite this, RAW image datasets are scarce and more expensive to collect than the already large and public RGB datasets. This paper introduces the AIM 2022 Challenge on Reversed Image Signal Processing and RAW Reconstruction. We aim to recover raw sensor images from the corresponding RGBs without metadata and, by doing this, "reverse" the ISP transformation. The proposed methods and benchmark establish the state-of-the-art for this low-level vision inverse problem, and generating realistic raw sensor readings can potentially benefit other tasks such as denoising and super-resolution.
Recovering Sign Bits of DCT Coefficients in Digital Images as an Optimization ProblemRuiyuan Lin, Sheng Liu, Jun Jiang et al.
Recovering unknown, missing, damaged, distorted, or lost information in DCT coefficients is a common task in multiple applications of digital image processing, including image compression, selective image encryption, and image communication. This paper investigates the recovery of sign bits in DCT coefficients of digital images, by proposing two different approximation methods to solve a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem, which is NP-hard in general. One method is a relaxation of the MILP problem to a linear programming (LP) problem, and the other splits the original MILP problem into some smaller MILP problems and an LP problem. We considered how the proposed methods can be applied to JPEG-encoded images and conducted extensive experiments to validate their performances. The experimental results showed that the proposed methods outperformed other existing methods by a substantial margin, both according to objective quality metrics and our subjective evaluation.

Overexposure Mask Fusion: Generalizable Reverse ISP Multi-Step RefinementJinha Kim, Jun Jiang, Jinwei Gu
With the advent of deep learning methods replacing the ISP in transforming sensor RAW readings into RGB images, numerous methodologies solidified into real-life applications. Equally potent is the task of inverting this process which will have applications in enhancing computational photography tasks that are conducted in the RAW domain, addressing lack of available RAW data while reaping from the benefits of performing tasks directly on sensor readings. This paper's proposed methodology is a state-of-the-art solution to the task of RAW reconstruction, and the multi-step refinement process integrating an overexposure mask is novel in three ways: instead of from RGB to bayer, the pipeline trains from RGB to demosaiced RAW allowing use of perceptual loss functions; the multi-step processes has greatly enhanced the performance of the baseline U-Net from start to end; the pipeline is a generalizable process of refinement that can enhance other high performance methodologies that support end-to-end learning.

Variational and Explanatory Neural Networks for Encoding Cancer Profiles and Predicting Drug ResponsesTianshu Feng, Rohan Gnanaolivu, Abolfazl Safikhani et al.
Human cancers present a significant public health challenge and require the discovery of novel drugs through translational research. Transcriptomics profiling data that describes molecular activities in tumors and cancer cell lines are widely utilized for predicting anti-cancer drug responses. However, existing AI models face challenges due to noise in transcriptomics data and lack of biological interpretability. To overcome these limitations, we introduce VETE (Variational and Explanatory Transcriptomics Encoder), a novel neural network framework that incorporates a variational component to mitigate noise effects and integrates traceable gene ontology into the neural network architecture for encoding cancer transcriptomics data. Key innovations include a local interpretability-guided method for identifying ontology paths, a visualization tool to elucidate biological mechanisms of drug responses, and the application of centralized large scale hyperparameter optimization. VETE demonstrated robust accuracy in cancer cell line classification and drug response prediction. Additionally, it provided traceable biological explanations for both tasks and offers insights into the mechanisms underlying its predictions. VETE bridges the gap between AI-driven predictions and biologically meaningful insights in cancer research, which represents a promising advancement in the field.

Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search under Neural Similarity Metric for Large-Scale RecommendationRihan Chen, Bin Liu, Han Zhu et al.
Model-based methods for recommender systems have been studied extensively for years. Modern recommender systems usually resort to 1) representation learning models which define user-item preference as the distance between their embedding representations, and 2) embedding-based Approximate Nearest Neighbor (ANN) search to tackle the efficiency problem introduced by large-scale corpus. While providing efficient retrieval, the embedding-based retrieval pattern also limits the model capacity since the form of user-item preference measure is restricted to the distance between their embedding representations. However, for other more precise user-item preference measures, e.g., preference scores directly derived from a deep neural network, they are computationally intractable because of the lack of an efficient retrieval method, and an exhaustive search for all user-item pairs is impractical. In this paper, we propose a novel method to extend ANN search to arbitrary matching functions, e.g., a deep neural network. Our main idea is to perform a greedy walk with a matching function in a similarity graph constructed from all items. To solve the problem that the similarity measures of graph construction and user-item matching function are heterogeneous, we propose a pluggable adversarial training task to ensure the graph search with arbitrary matching function can achieve fairly high precision. Experimental results in both open source and industry datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. The proposed method has been fully deployed in the Taobao display advertising platform and brings a considerable advertising revenue increase. We also summarize our detailed experiences in deployment in this paper.

A Universal Deep Learning Force Field for Molecular Dynamic Simulation and Vibrational Spectra PredictionShengjiao Ji, Yujin Zhang, Zihan Zou et al.
Accurate and efficient simulation of infrared (IR) and Raman spectra is essential for molecular identification and structural analysis. Traditional quantum chemistry methods based on the harmonic approximation neglect anharmonicity and nuclear quantum effects, while ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) remains computationally expensive. Here, we integrate our deep equivariant tensor attention network (DetaNet) with a velocity-Verlet integrator to enable fast and accurate machine learning molecular dynamics (MLMD) simulations for spectral prediction. Trained on the QMe14S dataset containing energies, forces, dipole moments, and polarizabilities for 186,102 small organic molecules, DetaNet yields a universal and transferable force field with high-order tensor prediction capability. Using time-correlation functions derived from MLMD and ring-polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) trajectories, we computed IR and Raman spectra that accurately reproduce anharmonic and nuclear quantum effects. Benchmark tests on isolated molecules, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, demonstrate that the DetaNet-based MD approach achieves near-experimental spectral accuracy with speedups up to three orders of magnitude over AIMD. Furthermore, the framework extends seamlessly to molecular and inorganic crystals, molecular aggregates, and biological macromolecules such as polypeptides with minimal fine-tuning. In all systems, DetaNet maintains high accuracy while significantly reducing computational cost. Overall, this work establishes a universal machine learning force field and tensor-aware MLMD framework that enable fast, accurate, and broadly applicable dynamic simulations and IR/Raman spectral predictions across diverse molecular and material systems.

Single Image Deraining via Feature-based Deep Convolutional Neural NetworkChaobing Zheng, Jun Jiang, Wenjian Ying et al.
It is challenging to remove rain-steaks from a single rainy image because the rain steaks are spatially varying in the rainy image. Although the CNN based methods have reported promising performance recently, there are still some defects, such as data dependency and insufficient interpretation. A single image deraining algorithm based on the combination of data-driven and model-based approaches is proposed. Firstly, an improved weighted guided image filter (iWGIF) is used to extract high-frequency information and learn the rain steaks to avoid interference from other information through the input image. Then, transfering the input image and rain steaks from the image domain to the feature domain adaptively to learn useful features for high-quality image deraining. Finally, networks with attention mechanisms is used to restore high-quality images from the latent features. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both qualitative and quantitative measures.
