Real-world Noisy Image Denoising: A New Benchmark

Jun Xu, Hui Li, Zhetong Liang et al.

Most of previous image denoising methods focus on additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). However, the real-world noisy image denoising problem with the advancing of the computer vision techiniques. In order to promote the study on this problem while implementing the concurrent real-world image denoising datasets, we construct a new benchmark dataset which contains comprehensive real-world noisy images of different natural scenes. These images are captured by different cameras under different camera settings. We evaluate the different denoising methods on our new dataset as well as previous datasets. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the recently proposed methods designed specifically for realistic noise removal based on sparse or low rank theories achieve better denoising performance and are more robust than other competing methods, and the newly proposed dataset is more challenging. The constructed dataset of real photographs is publicly available at \url{https://github.com/csjunxu/PolyUDataset} for researchers to investigate new real-world image denoising methods. We will add more analysis on the noise statistics in the real photographs of our new dataset in the next version of this article.

GrFormer: A Novel Transformer on Grassmann Manifold for Infrared and Visible Image Fusion

Huan Kang, Hui Li, Xiao-Jun Wu et al.

In the field of image fusion, promising progress has been made by modeling data from different modalities as linear subspaces. However, in practice, the source images are often located in a non-Euclidean space, where the Euclidean methods usually cannot encapsulate the intrinsic topological structure. Typically, the inner product performed in the Euclidean space calculates the algebraic similarity rather than the semantic similarity, which results in undesired attention output and a decrease in fusion performance. While the balance of low-level details and high-level semantics should be considered in infrared and visible image fusion task. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel attention mechanism based on Grassmann manifold for infrared and visible image fusion (GrFormer). Specifically, our method constructs a low-rank subspace mapping through projection constraints on the Grassmann manifold, compressing attention features into subspaces of varying rank levels. This forces the features to decouple into high-frequency details (local low-rank) and low-frequency semantics (global low-rank), thereby achieving multi-scale semantic fusion. Additionally, to effectively integrate the significant information, we develop a cross-modal fusion strategy (CMS) based on a covariance mask to maximise the complementary properties between different modalities and to suppress the features with high correlation, which are deemed redundant. The experimental results demonstrate that our network outperforms SOTA methods both qualitatively and quantitatively on multiple image fusion benchmarks. The codes are available at https://github.com/Shaoyun2023.

Attention-Guided Progressive Neural Texture Fusion for High Dynamic Range Image Restoration

Jie Chen, Zaifeng Yang, Tsz Nam Chan et al.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging via multi-exposure fusion is an important task for most modern imaging platforms. In spite of recent developments in both hardware and algorithm innovations, challenges remain over content association ambiguities caused by saturation, motion, and various artifacts introduced during multi-exposure fusion such as ghosting, noise, and blur. In this work, we propose an Attention-guided Progressive Neural Texture Fusion (APNT-Fusion) HDR restoration model which aims to address these issues within one framework. An efficient two-stream structure is proposed which separately focuses on texture feature transfer over saturated regions and multi-exposure tonal and texture feature fusion. A neural feature transfer mechanism is proposed which establishes spatial correspondence between different exposures based on multi-scale VGG features in the masked saturated HDR domain for discriminative contextual clues over the ambiguous image areas. A progressive texture blending module is designed to blend the encoded two-stream features in a multi-scale and progressive manner. In addition, we introduce several novel attention mechanisms, i.e., the motion attention module detects and suppresses the content discrepancies among the reference images; the saturation attention module facilitates differentiating the misalignment caused by saturation from those caused by motion; and the scale attention module ensures texture blending consistency between different coder/decoder scales. We carry out comprehensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations and ablation studies, which validate that these novel modules work coherently under the same framework and outperform state-of-the-art methods.

Underwater image enhancement with Image Colorfulness Measure

Hui Li, Xi Yang, ZhenMing Li et al.

Due to the absorption and scattering effects of the water, underwater images tend to suffer from many severe problems, such as low contrast, grayed out colors and blurring content. To improve the visual quality of underwater images, we proposed a novel enhancement model, which is a trainable end-to-end neural model. Two parts constitute the overall model. The first one is a non-parameter layer for the preliminary color correction, then the second part is consisted of parametric layers for a self-adaptive refinement, namely the channel-wise linear shift. For better details, contrast and colorfulness, this enhancement network is jointly optimized by the pixel-level and characteristiclevel training criteria. Through extensive experiments on natural underwater scenes, we show that the proposed method can get high quality enhancement results.

Visual Question Answering as Reading Comprehension

Hui Li, Peng Wang, Chunhua Shen et al.

Visual question answering (VQA) demands simultaneous comprehension of both the image visual content and natural language questions. In some cases, the reasoning needs the help of common sense or general knowledge which usually appear in the form of text. Current methods jointly embed both the visual information and the textual feature into the same space. However, how to model the complex interactions between the two different modalities is not an easy task. In contrast to struggling on multimodal feature fusion, in this paper, we propose to unify all the input information by natural language so as to convert VQA into a machine reading comprehension problem. With this transformation, our method not only can tackle VQA datasets that focus on observation based questions, but can also be naturally extended to handle knowledge-based VQA which requires to explore large-scale external knowledge base. It is a step towards being able to exploit large volumes of text and natural language processing techniques to address VQA problem. Two types of models are proposed to deal with open-ended VQA and multiple-choice VQA respectively. We evaluate our models on three VQA benchmarks. The comparable performance with the state-of-the-art demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Towards End-to-End Car License Plates Detection and Recognition with Deep Neural Networks

Hui Li, Peng Wang, Chunhua Shen

In this work, we tackle the problem of car license plate detection and recognition in natural scene images. We propose a unified deep neural network which can localize license plates and recognize the letters simultaneously in a single forward pass. The whole network can be trained end-to-end. In contrast to existing approaches which take license plate detection and recognition as two separate tasks and settle them step by step, our method jointly solves these two tasks by a single network. It not only avoids intermediate error accumulation, but also accelerates the processing speed. For performance evaluation, three datasets including images captured from various scenes under different conditions are tested. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach.

Dictionary learning based image enhancement for rarity detection

Hui Li, Xiaomeng Wang, Weifeng Liu et al.

Image enhancement is an important image processing technique that processes images suitably for a specific application e.g. image editing. The conventional solutions of image enhancement are grouped into two categories which are spatial domain processing method and transform domain processing method such as contrast manipulation, histogram equalization, homomorphic filtering. This paper proposes a new image enhance method based on dictionary learning. Particularly, the proposed method adjusts the image by manipulating the rarity of dictionary atoms. Firstly, learn the dictionary through sparse coding algorithms on divided sub-image blocks. Secondly, compute the rarity of dictionary atoms on statistics of the corresponding sparse coefficients. Thirdly, adjust the rarity according to specific application and form a new dictionary. Finally, reconstruct the image using the updated dictionary and sparse coefficients. Compared with the traditional techniques, the proposed method enhances image based on the image content not on distribution of pixel grey value or frequency. The advantages of the proposed method lie in that it is in better correspondence with the response of the human visual system and more suitable for salient objects extraction. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed image enhance method.
