Instance-Specific Feature Propagation for Referring SegmentationChang Liu, Xudong Jiang, Henghui Ding
Referring segmentation aims to generate a segmentation mask for the target instance indicated by a natural language expression. There are typically two kinds of existing methods: one-stage methods that directly perform segmentation on the fused vision and language features; and two-stage methods that first utilize an instance segmentation model for instance proposal and then select one of these instances via matching them with language features. In this work, we propose a novel framework that simultaneously detects the target-of-interest via feature propagation and generates a fine-grained segmentation mask. In our framework, each instance is represented by an Instance-Specific Feature (ISF), and the target-of-referring is identified by exchanging information among all ISFs using our proposed Feature Propagation Module (FPM). Our instance-aware approach learns the relationship among all objects, which helps to better locate the target-of-interest than one-stage methods. Comparing to two-stage methods, our approach collaboratively and interactively utilizes both vision and language information for synchronous identification and segmentation. In the experimental tests, our method outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods on all three RefCOCO series datasets.
BoRe-Depth: Self-supervised Monocular Depth Estimation with Boundary Refinement for Embedded SystemsChang Liu, Juan Li, Sheng Zhang et al.
Depth estimation is one of the key technologies for realizing 3D perception in unmanned systems. Monocular depth estimation has been widely researched because of its low-cost advantage, but the existing methods face the challenges of poor depth estimation performance and blurred object boundaries on embedded systems. In this paper, we propose a novel monocular depth estimation model, BoRe-Depth, which contains only 8.7M parameters. It can accurately estimate depth maps on embedded systems and significantly improves boundary quality. Firstly, we design an Enhanced Feature Adaptive Fusion Module (EFAF) which adaptively fuses depth features to enhance boundary detail representation. Secondly, we integrate semantic knowledge into the encoder to improve the object recognition and boundary perception capabilities. Finally, BoRe-Depth is deployed on NVIDIA Jetson Orin, and runs efficiently at 50.7 FPS. We demonstrate that the proposed model significantly outperforms previous lightweight models on multiple challenging datasets, and we provide detailed ablation studies for the proposed methods. The code is available at https://github.com/liangxiansheng093/BoRe-Depth.
Advancing Video Self-Supervised Learning via Image Foundation ModelsJingwei Wu, Zhewei Huang, Chang Liu
In the past decade, image foundation models (IFMs) have achieved unprecedented progress. However, the potential of directly using IFMs for video self-supervised representation learning has largely been overlooked. In this study, we propose an advancing video self-supervised learning (AdViSe) approach, aimed at significantly reducing the training overhead of video representation models using pre-trained IFMs. Specifically, we first introduce temporal modeling modules (ResNet3D) to IFMs, constructing a video representation model. We then employ a video self-supervised learning approach, playback rate perception, to train temporal modules while freezing the IFM components. Experiments on UCF101 demonstrate that AdViSe achieves performance comparable to state-of-the-art methods while reducing training time by $3.4\times$ and GPU memory usage by $8.2\times$. This study offers fresh insights into low-cost video self-supervised learning based on pre-trained IFMs. Code is available at https://github.com/JingwWu/advise-video-ssl.
PolSAR Image Classification Based on Dilated Convolution and Pixel-Refining Parallel Mapping network in the Complex DomainDongling Xiao, Chang Liu, Qi Wang et al.
Efficient and accurate polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification with a limited number of prior labels is always full of challenges. For general supervised deep learning classification algorithms, the pixel-by-pixel algorithm achieves precise yet inefficient classification with a small number of labeled pixels, whereas the pixel mapping algorithm achieves efficient yet edge-rough classification with more prior labels required. To take efficiency, accuracy and prior labels into account, we propose a novel pixel-refining parallel mapping network in the complex domain named CRPM-Net and the corresponding training algorithm for PolSAR image classification. CRPM-Net consists of two parallel sub-networks: a) A transfer dilated convolution mapping network in the complex domain (C-Dilated CNN) activated by a complex cross-convolution neural network (Cs-CNN), which is aiming at precise localization, high efficiency and the full use of phase information; b) A complex domain encoder-decoder network connected parallelly with C-Dilated CNN, which is to extract more contextual semantic features. Finally, we design a two-step algorithm to train the Cs-CNN and CRPM-Net with a small number of labeled pixels for higher accuracy by refining misclassified labeled pixels. We verify the proposed method on AIRSAR and E-SAR datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that CRPM-Net achieves the best classification results and substantially outperforms some latest state-of-the-art approaches in both efficiency and accuracy for PolSAR image classification. The source code and trained models for CRPM-Net is available at: https://github.com/PROoshio/CRPM-Net.

DiTPainter: Efficient Video Inpainting with Diffusion TransformersXian Wu, Chang Liu
Many existing video inpainting algorithms utilize optical flows to construct the corresponding maps and then propagate pixels from adjacent frames to missing areas by mapping. Despite the effectiveness of the propagation mechanism, they might encounter blurry and inconsistencies when dealing with inaccurate optical flows or large masks. Recently, Diffusion Transformer (DiT) has emerged as a revolutionary technique for video generation tasks. However, pretrained DiT models for video generation all contain a large amount of parameters, which makes it very time consuming to apply to video inpainting tasks. In this paper, we present DiTPainter, an end-to-end video inpainting model based on Diffusion Transformer (DiT). DiTPainter uses an efficient transformer network designed for video inpainting, which is trained from scratch instead of initializing from any large pretrained models. DiTPainter can address videos with arbitrary lengths and can be applied to video decaptioning and video completion tasks with an acceptable time cost. Experiments show that DiTPainter outperforms existing video inpainting algorithms with higher quality and better spatial-temporal consistency.

Detection of Underwater Multi-Targets Based on Self-Supervised Learning and Deformable Path Aggregation Feature Pyramid NetworkChang Liu
To overcome the constraints of the underwater environment and improve the accuracy and robustness of underwater target detection models, this paper develops a specialized dataset for underwater target detection and proposes an efficient algorithm for underwater multi-target detection. A self-supervised learning based on the SimSiam structure is employed for the pre-training of underwater target detection network. To address the problems of low detection accuracy caused by low contrast, mutual occlusion and dense distribution of underwater targets in underwater object detection, a detection model suitable for underwater target detection is proposed by introducing deformable convolution and dilated convolution. The proposed detection model can obtain more effective information by increasing the receptive field. In addition, the regression loss function EIoU is introduced, which improves model performance by separately calculating the width and height losses of the predicted box. Experiment results show that the accuracy of the underwater target detection has been improved by the proposed detector.

Make Your Actor Talk: Generalizable and High-Fidelity Lip Sync with Motion and Appearance DisentanglementRunyi Yu, Tianyu He, Ailing Zhang et al.
We aim to edit the lip movements in talking video according to the given speech while preserving the personal identity and visual details. The task can be decomposed into two sub-problems: (1) speech-driven lip motion generation and (2) visual appearance synthesis. Current solutions handle the two sub-problems within a single generative model, resulting in a challenging trade-off between lip-sync quality and visual details preservation. Instead, we propose to disentangle the motion and appearance, and then generate them one by one with a speech-to-motion diffusion model and a motion-conditioned appearance generation model. However, there still remain challenges in each stage, such as motion-aware identity preservation in (1) and visual details preservation in (2). Therefore, to preserve personal identity, we adopt landmarks to represent the motion, and further employ a landmark-based identity loss. To capture motion-agnostic visual details, we use separate encoders to encode the lip, non-lip appearance and motion, and then integrate them with a learned fusion module. We train MyTalk on a large-scale and diverse dataset. Experiments show that our method generalizes well to the unknown, even out-of-domain person, in terms of both lip sync and visual detail preservation. We encourage the readers to watch the videos on our project page (https://Ingrid789.github.io/MyTalk/).

Intra-task Mutual Attention based Vision Transformer for Few-Shot LearningWeihao Jiang, Chang Liu, Kun He
Humans possess remarkable ability to accurately classify new, unseen images after being exposed to only a few examples. Such ability stems from their capacity to identify common features shared between new and previously seen images while disregarding distractions such as background variations. However, for artificial neural network models, determining the most relevant features for distinguishing between two images with limited samples presents a challenge. In this paper, we propose an intra-task mutual attention method for few-shot learning, that involves splitting the support and query samples into patches and encoding them using the pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture. Specifically, we swap the class (CLS) token and patch tokens between the support and query sets to have the mutual attention, which enables each set to focus on the most useful information. This facilitates the strengthening of intra-class representations and promotes closer proximity between instances of the same class. For implementation, we adopt the ViT-based network architecture and utilize pre-trained model parameters obtained through self-supervision. By leveraging Masked Image Modeling as a self-supervised training task for pre-training, the pre-trained model yields semantically meaningful representations while successfully avoiding supervision collapse. We then employ a meta-learning method to fine-tune the last several layers and CLS token modules. Our strategy significantly reduces the num- ber of parameters that require fine-tuning while effectively uti- lizing the capability of pre-trained model. Extensive experiments show that our framework is simple, effective and computationally efficient, achieving superior performance as compared to the state-of-the-art baselines on five popular few-shot classification benchmarks under the 5-shot and 1-shot scenarios

LRNNet: A Light-Weighted Network with Efficient Reduced Non-Local Operation for Real-Time Semantic SegmentationWeihao Jiang, Zhaozhi Xie, Yaoyi Li et al.
The recent development of light-weighted neural networks has promoted the applications of deep learning under resource constraints and mobile applications. Many of these applications need to perform a real-time and efficient prediction for semantic segmentation with a light-weighted network. This paper introduces a light-weighted network with an efficient reduced non-local module (LRNNet) for efficient and realtime semantic segmentation. We proposed a factorized convolutional block in ResNet-Style encoder to achieve more lightweighted, efficient and powerful feature extraction. Meanwhile, our proposed reduced non-local module utilizes spatial regional dominant singular vectors to achieve reduced and more representative non-local feature integration with much lower computation and memory cost. Experiments demonstrate our superior trade-off among light-weight, speed, computation and accuracy. Without additional processing and pretraining, LRNNet achieves 72.2% mIoU on Cityscapes test dataset only using the fine annotation data for training with only 0.68M parameters and with 71 FPS on a GTX 1080Ti card.

Towards Fine-grained Human Pose Transfer with Detail Replenishing NetworkLingbo Yang, Pan Wang, Chang Liu et al.
Human pose transfer (HPT) is an emerging research topic with huge potential in fashion design, media production, online advertising and virtual reality. For these applications, the visual realism of fine-grained appearance details is crucial for production quality and user engagement. However, existing HPT methods often suffer from three fundamental issues: detail deficiency, content ambiguity and style inconsistency, which severely degrade the visual quality and realism of generated images. Aiming towards real-world applications, we develop a more challenging yet practical HPT setting, termed as Fine-grained Human Pose Transfer (FHPT), with a higher focus on semantic fidelity and detail replenishment. Concretely, we analyze the potential design flaws of existing methods via an illustrative example, and establish the core FHPT methodology by combing the idea of content synthesis and feature transfer together in a mutually-guided fashion. Thereafter, we substantiate the proposed methodology with a Detail Replenishing Network (DRN) and a corresponding coarse-to-fine model training scheme. Moreover, we build up a complete suite of fine-grained evaluation protocols to address the challenges of FHPT in a comprehensive manner, including semantic analysis, structural detection and perceptual quality assessment. Extensive experiments on the DeepFashion benchmark dataset have verified the power of proposed benchmark against start-of-the-art works, with 12\%-14\% gain on top-10 retrieval recall, 5\% higher joint localization accuracy, and near 40\% gain on face identity preservation. Moreover, the evaluation results offer further insights to the subject matter, which could inspire many promising future works along this direction.
HiFaceGAN: Face Renovation via Collaborative Suppression and ReplenishmentLingbo Yang, Chang Liu, Pan Wang et al.
Existing face restoration researches typically relies on either the degradation prior or explicit guidance labels for training, which often results in limited generalization ability over real-world images with heterogeneous degradations and rich background contents. In this paper, we investigate the more challenging and practical "dual-blind" version of the problem by lifting the requirements on both types of prior, termed as "Face Renovation"(FR). Specifically, we formulated FR as a semantic-guided generation problem and tackle it with a collaborative suppression and replenishment (CSR) approach. This leads to HiFaceGAN, a multi-stage framework containing several nested CSR units that progressively replenish facial details based on the hierarchical semantic guidance extracted from the front-end content-adaptive suppression modules. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real face images have verified the superior performance of HiFaceGAN over a wide range of challenging restoration subtasks, demonstrating its versatility, robustness and generalization ability towards real-world face processing applications.
FreeAnchor: Learning to Match Anchors for Visual Object DetectionXiaosong Zhang, Fang Wan, Chang Liu et al.
Modern CNN-based object detectors assign anchors for ground-truth objects under the restriction of object-anchor Intersection-over-Unit (IoU). In this study, we propose a learning-to-match approach to break IoU restriction, allowing objects to match anchors in a flexible manner. Our approach, referred to as FreeAnchor, updates hand-crafted anchor assignment to "free" anchor matching by formulating detector training as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) procedure. FreeAnchor targets at learning features which best explain a class of objects in terms of both classification and localization. FreeAnchor is implemented by optimizing detection customized likelihood and can be fused with CNN-based detectors in a plug-and-play manner. Experiments on COCO demonstrate that FreeAnchor consistently outperforms their counterparts with significant margins.

Learning-Based Dequantization For Image Restoration Against Extremely Poor IlluminationChang Liu, Xiaolin Wu, Xiao Shu
All existing image enhancement methods, such as HDR tone mapping, cannot recover A/D quantization losses due to insufficient or excessive lighting, (underflow and overflow problems). The loss of image details due to A/D quantization is complete and it cannot be recovered by traditional image processing methods, but the modern data-driven machine learning approach offers a much needed cure to the problem. In this work we propose a novel approach to restore and enhance images acquired in low and uneven lighting. First, the ill illumination is algorithmically compensated by emulating the effects of artificial supplementary lighting. Then a DCNN trained using only synthetic data recovers the missing detail caused by quantization.

Deep learning based supervised semantic segmentation of Electron Cryo-SubtomogramsChang Liu, Xiangrui Zeng, Ruogu Lin et al.
Cellular Electron Cryo-Tomography (CECT) is a powerful imaging technique for the 3D visualization of cellular structure and organization at submolecular resolution. It enables analyzing the native structures of macromolecular complexes and their spatial organization inside single cells. However, due to the high degree of structural complexity and practical imaging limitations, systematic macromolecular structural recovery inside CECT images remains challenging. Particularly, the recovery of a macromolecule is likely to be biased by its neighbor structures due to the high molecular crowding. To reduce the bias, here we introduce a novel 3D convolutional neural network inspired by Fully Convolutional Network and Encoder-Decoder Architecture for the supervised segmentation of macromolecules of interest in subtomograms. The tests of our models on realistically simulated CECT data demonstrate that our new approach has significantly improved segmentation performance compared to our baseline approach. Also, we demonstrate that the proposed model has generalization ability to segment new structures that do not exist in training data.
