Extracting Biomedical Factual Knowledge Using Pretrained Language Model and Electronic Health Record Context

Zonghai Yao, Yi Cao, Zhichao Yang et al.

Language Models (LMs) have performed well on biomedical natural language processing applications. In this study, we conducted some experiments to use prompt methods to extract knowledge from LMs as new knowledge Bases (LMs as KBs). However, prompting can only be used as a low bound for knowledge extraction, and perform particularly poorly on biomedical domain KBs. In order to make LMs as KBs more in line with the actual application scenarios of the biomedical domain, we specifically add EHR notes as context to the prompt to improve the low bound in the biomedical domain. We design and validate a series of experiments for our Dynamic-Context-BioLAMA task. Our experiments show that the knowledge possessed by those language models can distinguish the correct knowledge from the noise knowledge in the EHR notes, and such distinguishing ability can also be used as a new metric to evaluate the amount of knowledge possessed by the model.

Large Language Model-based Role-Playing for Personalized Medical Jargon Extraction

Jung Hoon Lim, Sunjae Kwon, Zonghai Yao et al.

Previous studies reveal that Electronic Health Records (EHR), which have been widely adopted in the U.S. to allow patients to access their personal medical information, do not have high readability to patients due to the prevalence of medical jargon. Tailoring medical notes to individual comprehension by identifying jargon that is difficult for each person will enhance the utility of generative models. We present the first quantitative analysis to measure the impact of role-playing in LLM in medical term extraction. By comparing the results of Mechanical Turk workers over 20 sentences, our study demonstrates that LLM role-playing improves F1 scores in 95% of cases across 14 different socio-demographic backgrounds. Furthermore, applying role-playing with in-context learning outperformed the previous state-of-the-art models. Our research showed that ChatGPT can improve traditional medical term extraction systems by utilizing role-play to deliver personalized patient education, a potential that previous models had not achieved.

Language Identification with Deep Bottleneck Features

Zhanyu Ma, Hong Yu

In this paper we proposed an end-to-end short utterances speech language identification(SLD) approach based on a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) neural network which is special suitable for SLD application in intelligent vehicles. Features used for LSTM learning are generated by a transfer learning method. Bottle-neck features of a deep neural network (DNN) which are trained for mandarin acoustic-phonetic classification are used for LSTM training. In order to improve the SLD accuracy of short utterances a phase vocoder based time-scale modification(TSM) method is used to reduce and increase speech rated of the test utterance. By splicing the normal, speech rate reduced and increased utterances, we can extend length of test utterances so as to improved improved the performance of the SLD system. The experimental results on AP17-OLR database shows that the proposed methods can improve the performance of SLD, especially on short utterance with 1s and 3s durations.

Histogram Transform-based Speaker Identification

Zhanyu Ma, Hong Yu

A novel text-independent speaker identification (SI) method is proposed. This method uses the Mel-frequency Cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and the dynamic information among adjacent frames as feature sets to capture speaker's characteristics. In order to utilize dynamic information, we design super-MFCCs features by cascading three neighboring MFCCs frames together. The probability density function (PDF) of these super-MFCCs features is estimated by the recently proposed histogram transform~(HT) method, which generates more training data by random transforms to realize the histogram PDF estimation and recedes the commonly occurred discontinuity problem in multivariate histograms computing. Compared to the conventional PDF estimation methods, such as Gaussian mixture models, the HT model shows promising improvement in the SI performance.

Adversarial Network Bottleneck Features for Noise Robust Speaker Verification

Hong Yu, Zheng-Hua Tan, Zhanyu Ma et al.

In this paper, we propose a noise robust bottleneck feature representation which is generated by an adversarial network (AN). The AN includes two cascade connected networks, an encoding network (EN) and a discriminative network (DN). Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) of clean and noisy speech are used as input to the EN and the output of the EN is used as the noise robust feature. The EN and DN are trained in turn, namely, when training the DN, noise types are selected as the training labels and when training the EN, all labels are set as the same, i.e., the clean speech label, which aims to make the AN features invariant to noise and thus achieve noise robustness. We evaluate the performance of the proposed feature on a Gaussian Mixture Model-Universal Background Model based speaker verification system, and make comparison to MFCC features of speech enhanced by short-time spectral amplitude minimum mean square error (STSA-MMSE) and deep neural network-based speech enhancement (DNN-SE) methods. Experimental results on the RSR2015 database show that the proposed AN bottleneck feature (AN-BN) dramatically outperforms the STSA-MMSE and DNN-SE based MFCCs for different noise types and signal-to-noise ratios. Furthermore, the AN-BN feature is able to improve the speaker verification performance under the clean condition.

DNN Filter Bank Cepstral Coefficients for Spoofing Detection

Hong Yu, Zheng-Hua Tan, Zhanyu Ma et al.

With the development of speech synthesis techniques, automatic speaker verification systems face the serious challenge of spoofing attack. In order to improve the reliability of speaker verification systems, we develop a new filter bank based cepstral feature, deep neural network filter bank cepstral coefficients (DNN-FBCC), to distinguish between natural and spoofed speech. The deep neural network filter bank is automatically generated by training a filter bank neural network (FBNN) using natural and synthetic speech. By adding restrictions on the training rules, the learned weight matrix of FBNN is band-limited and sorted by frequency, similar to the normal filter bank. Unlike the manually designed filter bank, the learned filter bank has different filter shapes in different channels, which can capture the differences between natural and synthetic speech more effectively. The experimental results on the ASVspoof {2015} database show that the Gaussian mixture model maximum-likelihood (GMM-ML) classifier trained by the new feature performs better than the state-of-the-art linear frequency cepstral coefficients (LFCC) based classifier, especially on detecting unknown attacks.

Neural Semantic Encoders

Tsendsuren Munkhdalai, Hong Yu

We present a memory augmented neural network for natural language understanding: Neural Semantic Encoders. NSE is equipped with a novel memory update rule and has a variable sized encoding memory that evolves over time and maintains the understanding of input sequences through read}, compose and write operations. NSE can also access multiple and shared memories. In this paper, we demonstrated the effectiveness and the flexibility of NSE on five different natural language tasks: natural language inference, question answering, sentence classification, document sentiment analysis and machine translation where NSE achieved state-of-the-art performance when evaluated on publically available benchmarks. For example, our shared-memory model showed an encouraging result on neural machine translation, improving an attention-based baseline by approximately 1.0 BLEU.
