Bundle Adjustment in the Eager Mode

Zitong Zhan, Huan Xu, Zihang Fang et al.

Bundle adjustment (BA) is a critical technique in various robotic applications such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), augmented reality (AR), and photogrammetry. BA optimizes parameters such as camera poses and 3D landmarks to align them with observations. With the growing importance of deep learning in perception systems, there is an increasing need to integrate BA with deep learning frameworks for enhanced reliability and performance. However, widely-used C++-based BA libraries, such as GTSAM, g$^2$o, and Ceres, lack native integration with modern deep learning libraries like PyTorch. This limitation affects their flexibility, adaptability, ease of debugging, and overall implementation efficiency. To address this gap, we introduce an eager-mode BA library seamlessly integrated with PyTorch with high efficiency. Our approach includes GPU-accelerated, differentiable, and sparse operations designed for \nth{2}-order optimization, Lie group and Lie algebra operations, and linear solvers. Our eager-mode BA on GPU demonstrates substantial runtime efficiency, achieving an average speedup of 18.5$\times$, 22$\times$, and 23$\times$ compared to GTSAM, g$^2$o, and Ceres, respectively. The source code will be available at https://github.com/sair-lab/bae.

Enhancing Surgical Robots with Embodied Intelligence for Autonomous Ultrasound Scanning

Huan Xu, Jinlin Wu, Guanglin Cao et al.

Ultrasound robots are increasingly used in medical diagnostics and early disease screening. However, current ultrasound robots lack the intelligence to understand human intentions and instructions, hindering autonomous ultrasound scanning. To solve this problem, we propose a novel Ultrasound Embodied Intelligence system that equips ultrasound robots with the large language model (LLM) and domain knowledge, thereby improving the efficiency of ultrasound robots. Specifically, we first design an ultrasound operation knowledge database to add expertise in ultrasound scanning to the LLM, enabling the LLM to perform precise motion planning. Furthermore, we devise a dynamic ultrasound scanning strategy based on a \textit{think-observe-execute} prompt engineering, allowing LLMs to dynamically adjust motion planning strategies during the scanning procedures. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our system significantly improves ultrasound scan efficiency and quality from verbal commands. This advancement in autonomous medical scanning technology contributes to non-invasive diagnostics and streamlined medical workflows.

A Multi-State Diagnosis and Prognosis Framework with Feature Learning for Tool Condition Monitoring

Chong Zhang, Geok Soon Hong, Jun-Hong Zhou et al.

In this paper, a multi-state diagnosis and prognosis (MDP) framework is proposed for tool condition monitoring via a deep belief network based multi-state approach (DBNMS). For fault diagnosis, a cost-sensitive deep belief network (namely ECS-DBN) is applied to deal with the imbalanced data problem for tool state estimation. An appropriate prognostic degradation model is then applied for tool wear estimation based on the different tool states. The proposed framework has the advantage of automatic feature representation learning and shows better performance in accuracy and robustness. The effectiveness of the proposed DBNMS is validated using a real-world dataset obtained from the gun drilling process. This dataset contains a large amount of measured signals involving different tool geometries under various operating conditions. The DBNMS is examined for both the tool state estimation and tool wear estimation tasks. In the experimental studies, the prediction results are evaluated and compared with popular machine learning approaches, which show the superior performance of the proposed DBNMS approach.

Adaptive Recurrent Neural Network Based on Mixture Layer

Kui Zhao, Yuechuan Li, Chi Zhang et al.

Although Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) has been a powerful tool for modeling sequential data, its performance is inadequate when processing sequences with multiple patterns. In this paper, we address this challenge by introducing a novel mixture layer and constructing an adaptive RNN. The mixture layer augmented RNN (termed as M-RNN) partitions patterns in training sequences into several clusters and stores the principle patterns as prototype vectors of components in a mixture model. By leveraging the mixture layer, the proposed method can adaptively update states according to the similarities between encoded inputs and prototype vectors, leading to a stronger capacity in assimilating sequences with multiple patterns. Moreover, our approach can be further extended by taking advantage of prior knowledge about data. Experiments on both synthetic and real datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
