Autonomous driving techniques have been flourishing in recent years while thirsting for huge amounts of high-quality data. However, it is difficult for real-world datasets to keep up with the pace of changing requirements due to their expensive and time-consuming experimental and labeling costs. Therefore, more and more researchers are turning to synthetic datasets to easily generate rich and changeable data as an effective complement to the real world and to improve the performance of algorithms. In this paper, we summarize the evolution of synthetic dataset generation methods and review the work to date in synthetic datasets related to single and multi-task categories for to autonomous driving study. We also discuss the role that synthetic dataset plays the evaluation, gap test, and positive effect in autonomous driving related algorithm testing, especially on trustworthiness and safety aspects. Finally, we discuss general trends and possible development directions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey focusing on the application of synthetic datasets in autonomous driving. This survey also raises awareness of the problems of real-world deployment of autonomous driving technology and provides researchers with a possible solution.
Deep Image Semantic Communication Model for Artificial Intelligent Internet of ThingsLi Ping Qian, Yi Zhang, Sikai Lyu et al.
With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligent Internet of Things (AIoT), the image data from AIoT devices has been witnessing the explosive increasing. In this paper, a novel deep image semantic communication model is proposed for the efficient image communication in AIoT. Particularly, at the transmitter side, a high-precision image semantic segmentation algorithm is proposed to extract the semantic information of the image to achieve significant compression of the image data. At the receiver side, a semantic image restoration algorithm based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is proposed to convert the semantic image to a real scene image with detailed information. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed image semantic communication model can improve the image compression ratio and recovery accuracy by 71.93% and 25.07% on average in comparison with WebP and CycleGAN, respectively. More importantly, our demo experiment shows that the proposed model reduces the total delay by 95.26% in the image communication, when comparing with the original image transmission.

Adaptive Testing Environment Generation for Connected and Automated Vehicles with Dense Reinforcement LearningJingxuan Yang, Ruoxuan Bai, Haoyuan Ji et al. · tsinghua
The assessment of safety performance plays a pivotal role in the development and deployment of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). A common approach involves designing testing scenarios based on prior knowledge of CAVs (e.g., surrogate models), conducting tests in these scenarios, and subsequently evaluating CAVs' safety performances. However, substantial differences between CAVs and the prior knowledge can significantly diminish the evaluation efficiency. In response to this issue, existing studies predominantly concentrate on the adaptive design of testing scenarios during the CAV testing process. Yet, these methods have limitations in their applicability to high-dimensional scenarios. To overcome this challenge, we develop an adaptive testing environment that bolsters evaluation robustness by incorporating multiple surrogate models and optimizing the combination coefficients of these surrogate models to enhance evaluation efficiency. We formulate the optimization problem as a regression task utilizing quadratic programming. To efficiently obtain the regression target via reinforcement learning, we propose the dense reinforcement learning method and devise a new adaptive policy with high sample efficiency. Essentially, our approach centers on learning the values of critical scenes displaying substantial surrogate-to-real gaps. The effectiveness of our method is validated in high-dimensional overtaking scenarios, demonstrating that our approach achieves notable evaluation efficiency.

Tactical Decision Making for Emergency Vehicles Based on A Combinational Learning MethodHaoyi Niu, Jianming Hu, Zheyu Cui et al.
Increasing the response time of emergency vehicles(EVs) could lead to an immeasurable loss of property and life. On this account, tactical decision making for EVs' microscopic control remains an indispensable issue to be improved. In this paper, a rule-based avoiding strategy(AS) is devised, that CVs in the prioritized zone ahead of EV should accelerate or change their lane to avoid it. Besides, a novel DQN method with speed-adaptive compact state space (SC-DQN) is put forward to fit in EVs' high-speed feature and generalize in various road topologies. Afterward, the execution of AS feedback to the input of SC-DQN so that they joint organically as a combinational method. The following approach reveals that DRL could complement rule-based avoiding strategy in generalization, and on the contrary, the rule-based avoiding strategy could complement DRL in stability, and their combination could lead to less response time, lower collision rate and smoother trajectory.

Towards Accuracy-Fairness Paradox: Adversarial Example-based Data Augmentation for Visual DebiasingYi Zhang, Jitao Sang
Machine learning fairness concerns about the biases towards certain protected or sensitive group of people when addressing the target tasks. This paper studies the debiasing problem in the context of image classification tasks. Our data analysis on facial attribute recognition demonstrates (1) the attribution of model bias from imbalanced training data distribution and (2) the potential of adversarial examples in balancing data distribution. We are thus motivated to employ adversarial example to augment the training data for visual debiasing. Specifically, to ensure the adversarial generalization as well as cross-task transferability, we propose to couple the operations of target task classifier training, bias task classifier training, and adversarial example generation. The generated adversarial examples supplement the target task training dataset via balancing the distribution over bias variables in an online fashion. Results on simulated and real-world debiasing experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution in simultaneously improving model accuracy and fairness. Preliminary experiment on few-shot learning further shows the potential of adversarial attack-based pseudo sample generation as alternative solution to make up for the training data lackage.

Objects detection for remote sensing images based on polar coordinatesLin Zhou, Haoran Wei, Hao Li et al.
Arbitrary-oriented object detection is an important task in the field of remote sensing object detection. Existing studies have shown that the polar coordinate system has obvious advantages in dealing with the problem of rotating object modeling, that is, using fewer parameters to achieve more accurate rotating object detection. However, present state-of-the-art detectors based on deep learning are all modeled in Cartesian coordinates. In this article, we introduce the polar coordinate system to the deep learning detector for the first time, and propose an anchor free Polar Remote Sensing Object Detector (P-RSDet), which can achieve competitive detection accuracy via uses simpler object representation model and less regression parameters. In P-RSDet method, arbitrary-oriented object detection can be achieved by predicting the center point and regressing one polar radius and two polar angles. Besides, in order to express the geometric constraint relationship between the polar radius and the polar angle, a Polar Ring Area Loss function is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of the corner position. Experiments on DOTA, UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 datasets show that our P-RSDet achieves state-of-the-art performances with simpler model and less regression parameters.

Testing Scenario Library Generation for Connected and Automated Vehicles, Part II: Case StudiesShuo Feng, Yiheng Feng, Haowei Sun et al.
Testing scenario library generation (TSLG) is a critical step for the development and deployment of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). In Part I of this study, a general methodology for TSLG is proposed, and theoretical properties are investigated regarding the accuracy and efficiency of CAV evaluation. This paper aims to provide implementation examples and guidelines, and to enhance the proposed methodology under high-dimensional scenarios. Three typical cases, including cut-in, highway-exit, and car-following, are designed and studied in this paper. For each case, the process of library generation and CAV evaluation is elaborated. To address the challenges brought by high dimensions, the proposed methodology is further enhanced by reinforcement learning technique. For all three cases, results show that the proposed methods can accelerate the CAV evaluation process by multiple magnitudes with same evaluation accuracy, if compared with the on-road test method.

A Right-of-Way Based Strategy to Implement Safe and Efficient Driving at Non-Signalized Intersections for Automated VehiclesYadong Xing, Can Zhao, ZhiHeng Li et al.
Non-signalized intersection is a typical and common scenario for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). How to balance safety and efficiency remains difficult for researchers. To improve the original Responsibility Sensitive Safety (RSS) driving strategy on the non-signalized intersection, we propose a new strategy in this paper, based on right-of-way assignment (RWA). The performances of RSS strategy, cooperative driving strategy, and RWA based strategy are tested and compared. Testing results indicate that our strategy yields better traffic efficiency than RSS strategy, but not satisfying as the cooperative driving strategy due to the limited range of communication and the lack of long-term planning. However, our new strategy requires much fewer communication costs among vehicles.
