Neighbor Embedding Variational AutoencoderRenfei Tu, Yang Liu, Yongzeng Xue et al.
Being one of the most popular generative framework, variational autoencoders(VAE) are known to suffer from a phenomenon termed posterior collapse, i.e. the latent variational distributions collapse to the prior, especially when a strong decoder network is used. In this work, we analyze the latent representation of collapsed VAEs, and proposed a novel model, neighbor embedding VAE(NE-VAE), which explicitly constraints the encoder to encode inputs close in the input space to be close in the latent space. We observed that for VAE variants that report similar ELBO, KL divergence or even mutual information scores may still behave quite differently in the latent organization. In our experiments, NE-VAE can produce qualitatively different latent representations with majority of the latent dimensions remained active, which may benefit downstream latent space optimization tasks. NE-VAE can prevent posterior collapse to a much greater extent than it's predecessors, and can be easily plugged into any autoencoder framework, without introducing addition model components and complex training routines.
Countering Malicious DeepFakes: Survey, Battleground, and HorizonFelix Juefei-Xu, Run Wang, Yihao Huang et al.
The creation or manipulation of facial appearance through deep generative approaches, known as DeepFake, have achieved significant progress and promoted a wide range of benign and malicious applications, e.g., visual effect assistance in movie and misinformation generation by faking famous persons. The evil side of this new technique poses another popular study, i.e., DeepFake detection aiming to identify the fake faces from the real ones. With the rapid development of the DeepFake-related studies in the community, both sides have formed the relationship of battleground, pushing the improvements of each other and inspiring new directions, e.g., the evasion of DeepFake detection. Nevertheless, the overview of such battleground and the new direction is unclear and neglected by recent surveys due to the rapid increase of related publications, limiting the in-depth understanding of the tendency and future works. To fill this gap, in this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview and detailed analysis of the research work on the topic of DeepFake generation, DeepFake detection as well as evasion of DeepFake detection, with more than 318 research papers carefully surveyed. We present the taxonomy of various DeepFake generation methods and the categorization of various DeepFake detection methods, and more importantly, we showcase the battleground between the two parties with detailed interactions between the adversaries (DeepFake generation) and the defenders (DeepFake detection). The battleground allows fresh perspective into the latest landscape of the DeepFake research and can provide valuable analysis towards the research challenges and opportunities as well as research trends and future directions. We also elaborately design interactive diagrams (http://www.xujuefei.com/dfsurvey) to allow researchers to explore their own interests on popular DeepFake generators or detectors.

A bio-inspired algorithm for fuzzy user equilibrium problem by aid of Physarum PolycephalumYang Liu, Xiaoge Zhang, Yong Deng
The user equilibrium in traffic assignment problem is based on the fact that travelers choose the minimum-cost path between every origin-destination pair and on the assumption that such a behavior will lead to an equilibrium of the traffic network. In this paper, we consider this problem when the traffic network links are fuzzy cost. Therefore, a Physarum-type algorithm is developed to unify the Physarum network and the traffic network for taking full of advantage of Physarum Polycephalum's adaptivity in network design to solve the user equilibrium problem. Eventually, some experiments are used to test the performance of this method. The results demonstrate that our approach is competitive when compared with other existing algorithms.
