SGV3D:Towards Scenario Generalization for Vision-based Roadside 3D Object Detection

Lei Yang, Xinyu Zhang, Jun Li et al.

Roadside perception can greatly increase the safety of autonomous vehicles by extending their perception ability beyond the visual range and addressing blind spots. However, current state-of-the-art vision-based roadside detection methods possess high accuracy on labeled scenes but have inferior performance on new scenes. This is because roadside cameras remain stationary after installation and can only collect data from a single scene, resulting in the algorithm overfitting these roadside backgrounds and camera poses. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose an innovative Scenario Generalization Framework for Vision-based Roadside 3D Object Detection, dubbed SGV3D. Specifically, we employ a Background-suppressed Module (BSM) to mitigate background overfitting in vision-centric pipelines by attenuating background features during the 2D to bird's-eye-view projection. Furthermore, by introducing the Semi-supervised Data Generation Pipeline (SSDG) using unlabeled images from new scenes, diverse instance foregrounds with varying camera poses are generated, addressing the risk of overfitting specific camera poses. We evaluate our method on two large-scale roadside benchmarks. Our method surpasses all previous methods by a significant margin in new scenes, including +42.57% for vehicle, +5.87% for pedestrian, and +14.89% for cyclist compared to BEVHeight on the DAIR-V2X-I heterologous benchmark. On the larger-scale Rope3D heterologous benchmark, we achieve notable gains of 14.48% for car and 12.41% for large vehicle. We aspire to contribute insights on the exploration of roadside perception techniques, emphasizing their capability for scenario generalization. An Appearance Defect Detection Method for Cigarettes Based on C-CenterNet

Hongyu Liu, Guowu Yuan, Lei Yang et al.

Due to the poor adaptability of traditional methods in the cigarette detection task on the automatic cigarette production line, it is difficult to accurately identify whether a cigarette has defects and the types of defects; thus, a cigarette appearance defect detection method based on C-CenterNet is proposed. This detector uses keypoint estimation to locate center points and regresses all other defect properties. Firstly, Resnet50 is used as the backbone feature extraction network, and the convolutional block attention mechanism (CBAM) is introduced to enhance the network's ability to extract effective features and reduce the interference of non-target information. At the same time, the feature pyramid network is used to enhance the feature extraction of each layer. Then, deformable convolution is used to replace part of the common convolution to enhance the learning ability of different shape defects. Finally, the activation function ACON (ActivateOrNot) is used instead of the ReLU activation function, and the activation operation of some neurons is adaptively selected to improve the detection accuracy of the network. The experimental results are mainly acquired via the mean Average Precision (mAP). The experimental results show that the mAP of the C-CenterNet model applied in the cigarette appearance defect detection task is 95.01%. Compared with the original CenterNet model, the model's success rate is increased by 6.14%, so it can meet the requirements of precision and adaptability in cigarette detection tasks on the automatic cigarette production line.

SparseDet: A Simple and Effective Framework for Fully Sparse LiDAR-based 3D Object Detection

Lin Liu, Ziying Song, Qiming Xia et al.

LiDAR-based sparse 3D object detection plays a crucial role in autonomous driving applications due to its computational efficiency advantages. Existing methods either use the features of a single central voxel as an object proxy, or treat an aggregated cluster of foreground points as an object proxy. However, the former lacks the ability to aggregate contextual information, resulting in insufficient information expression in object proxies. The latter relies on multi-stage pipelines and auxiliary tasks, which reduce the inference speed. To maintain the efficiency of the sparse framework while fully aggregating contextual information, in this work, we propose SparseDet which designs sparse queries as object proxies. It introduces two key modules, the Local Multi-scale Feature Aggregation (LMFA) module and the Global Feature Aggregation (GFA) module, aiming to fully capture the contextual information, thereby enhancing the ability of the proxies to represent objects. Where LMFA sub-module achieves feature fusion across different scales for sparse key voxels %which does this through via coordinate transformations and using nearest neighbor relationships to capture object-level details and local contextual information, GFA sub-module uses self-attention mechanisms to selectively aggregate the features of the key voxels across the entire scene for capturing scene-level contextual information. Experiments on nuScenes and KITTI demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Specifically, on nuScene, SparseDet surpasses the previous best sparse detector VoxelNeXt by 2.2\% mAP with 13.5 FPS, and on KITTI, it surpasses VoxelNeXt by 1.12\% $\mathbf{AP_{3D}}$ on hard level tasks with 17.9 FPS.

MeshAnything: Artist-Created Mesh Generation with Autoregressive Transformers

Yiwen Chen, Tong He, Di Huang et al.

Recently, 3D assets created via reconstruction and generation have matched the quality of manually crafted assets, highlighting their potential for replacement. However, this potential is largely unrealized because these assets always need to be converted to meshes for 3D industry applications, and the meshes produced by current mesh extraction methods are significantly inferior to Artist-Created Meshes (AMs), i.e., meshes created by human artists. Specifically, current mesh extraction methods rely on dense faces and ignore geometric features, leading to inefficiencies, complicated post-processing, and lower representation quality. To address these issues, we introduce MeshAnything, a model that treats mesh extraction as a generation problem, producing AMs aligned with specified shapes. By converting 3D assets in any 3D representation into AMs, MeshAnything can be integrated with various 3D asset production methods, thereby enhancing their application across the 3D industry. The architecture of MeshAnything comprises a VQ-VAE and a shape-conditioned decoder-only transformer. We first learn a mesh vocabulary using the VQ-VAE, then train the shape-conditioned decoder-only transformer on this vocabulary for shape-conditioned autoregressive mesh generation. Our extensive experiments show that our method generates AMs with hundreds of times fewer faces, significantly improving storage, rendering, and simulation efficiencies, while achieving precision comparable to previous methods.

iShape: A First Step Towards Irregular Shape Instance Segmentation

Lei Yang, Yan Zi Wei, Yisheng HE et al.

In this paper, we introduce a brand new dataset to promote the study of instance segmentation for objects with irregular shapes. Our key observation is that though irregularly shaped objects widely exist in daily life and industrial scenarios, they received little attention in the instance segmentation field due to the lack of corresponding datasets. To fill this gap, we propose iShape, an irregular shape dataset for instance segmentation. iShape contains six sub-datasets with one real and five synthetics, each represents a scene of a typical irregular shape. Unlike most existing instance segmentation datasets of regular objects, iShape has many characteristics that challenge existing instance segmentation algorithms, such as large overlaps between bounding boxes of instances, extreme aspect ratios, and large numbers of connected components per instance. We benchmark popular instance segmentation methods on iShape and find their performance drop dramatically. Hence, we propose an affinity-based instance segmentation algorithm, called ASIS, as a stronger baseline. ASIS explicitly combines perception and reasoning to solve Arbitrary Shape Instance Segmentation including irregular objects. Experimental results show that ASIS outperforms the state-of-the-art on iShape. Dataset and code are available at https://ishape.github.io

TreeSegNet: Adaptive Tree CNNs for Subdecimeter Aerial Image Segmentation

Kai Yue, Lei Yang, Ruirui Li et al.

For the task of subdecimeter aerial imagery segmentation, fine-grained semantic segmentation results are usually difficult to obtain because of complex remote sensing content and optical conditions. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown outstanding performance on this task. Although many deep neural network structures and techniques have been applied to improve the accuracy, few have paid attention to better differentiating the easily confused classes. In this paper, we propose TreeSegNet which adopts an adaptive network to increase the classification rate at the pixelwise level. Specifically, based on the infrastructure of DeepUNet, a Tree-CNN block in which each node represents a ResNeXt unit is constructed adaptively according to the confusion matrix and the proposed TreeCutting algorithm. By transporting feature maps through concatenating connections, the Tree-CNN block fuses multiscale features and learns best weights for the model. In experiments on the ISPRS 2D semantic labeling Potsdam dataset, the results obtained by TreeSegNet are better than those of other published state-of-the-art methods. Detailed comparison and analysis show that the improvement brought by the adaptive Tree-CNN block is significant.

DeepUNet: A Deep Fully Convolutional Network for Pixel-level Sea-Land Segmentation

Ruirui Li, Wenjie Liu, Lei Yang et al.

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental research in remote sensing image processing. Because of the complex maritime environment, the sea-land segmentation is a challenging task. Although the neural network has achieved excellent performance in semantic segmentation in the last years, there are a few of works using CNN for sea-land segmentation and the results could be further improved. This paper proposes a novel deep convolution neural network named DeepUNet. Like the U-Net, its structure has a contracting path and an expansive path to get high resolution output. But differently, the DeepUNet uses DownBlocks instead of convolution layers in the contracting path and uses UpBlock in the expansive path. The two novel blocks bring two new connections that are U-connection and Plus connection. They are promoted to get more precise segmentation results. To verify our network architecture, we made a new challenging sea-land dataset and compare the DeepUNet on it with the SegNet and the U-Net. Experimental results show that DeepUNet achieved good performance compared with other architectures, especially in high-resolution remote sensing imagery.
