NODE-ImgNet: a PDE-informed effective and robust model for image denoising

Inspired by the traditional partial differential equation (PDE) approach for image denoising, we propose a novel neural network architecture, referred as NODE-ImgNet, that combines neural ordinary differential equations (NODEs) with convolutional neural network (CNN) blocks. NODE-ImgNet is intrinsically a PDE model, where the dynamic system is learned implicitly without the explicit specification of the PDE. This naturally circumvents the typical issues associated with introducing artifacts during the learning process. By invoking such a NODE structure, which can also be viewed as a continuous variant of a residual network (ResNet) and inherits its advantage in image denoising, our model achieves enhanced accuracy and parameter efficiency. In particular, our model exhibits consistent effectiveness in different scenarios, including denoising gray and color images perturbed by Gaussian noise, as well as real-noisy images, and demonstrates superiority in learning from small image datasets.

Modelling Paralinguistic Properties in Conversational Speech to Detect Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder

Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are two chronic mental health conditions that clinicians find challenging to distinguish based on clinical interviews, due to their overlapping symptoms. In this work, we investigate the automatic detection of these two conditions by modelling both verbal and non-verbal cues in a set of interviews. We propose a new approach of modelling short-term features with visibility-signature transform, and compare it with widely used high-level statistical functions. We demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed signature-based model. Furthermore, we show the role of different sets of features in characterising BD and BPD.

Learning to Detect Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder with Language and Speech in Non-Clinical Interviews

Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are both chronic psychiatric disorders. However, their overlapping symptoms and common comorbidity make it challenging for the clinicians to distinguish the two conditions on the basis of a clinical interview. In this work, we first present a new multi-modal dataset containing interviews involving individuals with BD or BPD being interviewed about a non-clinical topic . We investigate the automatic detection of the two conditions, and demonstrate a good linear classifier that can be learnt using a down-selected set of features from the different aspects of the interviews and a novel approach of summarising these features. Finally, we find that different sets of features characterise BD and BPD, thus providing insights into the difference between the automatic screening of the two conditions.

Signature features with the visibility transformation

In this paper we put the visibility transformation on a clear theoretical footing and show that this transform is able to embed the effect of the absolute position of the data stream into signature features in a unified and efficient way. The generated feature set is particularly useful in pattern recognition tasks, for its simplifying role in allowing the signature feature set to accommodate nonlinear functions of absolute and relative values.

A Note on Random Sampling for Matrix Multiplication

This paper extends the framework of randomised matrix multiplication to a coarser partition and proposes an algorithm as a complement to the classical algorithm, especially when the optimal probability distribution of the latter one is closed to uniform. The new algorithm increases the likelihood of getting a small approximation error in 2-norm and has the squared approximation error in Frobenious norm bounded by that from the classical algorithm.
