MUGEN: Evaluating and Improving Multi-audio Understanding of Large Audio-Language ModelsChih-Kai Yang, Yun-Shao Tsai, Yu-Kai Guo et al.
While multi-audio understanding is critical for large audio-language models (LALMs), it remains underexplored. We introduce MUGEN, a comprehensive benchmark evaluating this capability across speech, general audio, and music. Our experiments reveal consistent weaknesses in multi-audio settings, and performance degrades sharply as the number of concurrent audio inputs increases, identifying input scaling as a fundamental bottleneck. We further investigate training-free strategies and observe that Audio-Permutational Self-Consistency, which diversifies the order of audio candidates, helps models form more robust aggregated predictions, yielding up to 6.28% accuracy gains. Combining this permutation strategy with Chain-of-Thought further improves performance to 6.74%. These results expose blind spots in current LALMs and provide a foundation for evaluating complex auditory comprehension.

ALICE: A Multifaceted Evaluation Framework of Large Audio-Language Models' In-Context Learning AbilityYen-Ting Piao, Jay Chiehen Liao, Wei-Tang Chien et al.
While Large Audio-Language Models (LALMs) have been shown to exhibit degraded instruction-following capabilities, their ability to infer task patterns from in-context examples under audio conditioning remains unstudied. To address this gap, we present ALICE, a three-stage framework that progressively reduces textual guidance to systematically evaluate LALMs' in-context learning ability under audio conditioning. Evaluating six LALMs across four audio understanding tasks under two output constraint categories, we uncover a consistent asymmetry across all stages and LALMs: in-context demonstrations reliably improve format compliance but fail to improve, and often degrade, the core task performance. This suggests that LALMs can glean surface-level formatting patterns from demonstrations but may struggle to leverage cross-modal semantic grounding to reliably infer task objectives from audio-conditioned examples, highlighting potential limitations in current cross-modal integration.

SAKURA: On the Multi-hop Reasoning of Large Audio-Language Models Based on Speech and Audio InformationChih-Kai Yang, Neo Ho, Yen-Ting Piao et al.
Large audio-language models (LALMs) extend the large language models with multimodal understanding in speech, audio, etc. While their performances on speech and audio-processing tasks are extensively studied, their reasoning abilities remain underexplored. Particularly, their multi-hop reasoning, the ability to recall and integrate multiple facts, lacks systematic evaluation. Existing benchmarks focus on general speech and audio-processing tasks, conversational abilities, and fairness but overlook this aspect. To bridge this gap, we introduce SAKURA, a benchmark assessing LALMs' multi-hop reasoning based on speech and audio information. Results show that LALMs struggle to integrate speech/audio representations for multi-hop reasoning, even when they extract the relevant information correctly, highlighting a fundamental challenge in multimodal reasoning. Our findings expose a critical limitation in LALMs, offering insights and resources for future research.

SAKE: Towards Editing Auditory Attribute Knowledge of Large Audio-Language ModelsChih-Kai Yang, Yen-Ting Piao, Tzu-Wen Hsu et al.
Knowledge editing offers an efficient way to update model knowledge without full retraining, but prior work has concentrated almost exclusively on textual or visual modalities. We introduce SAKE, the first benchmark specifically designed for editing auditory attribute knowledge in Large Audio-Language Models (LALMs). Unlike factual updates, SAKE targets several abstract auditory attributes, capturing knowledge types that go beyond conventional textual and visual domains. We benchmark seven editing methods on two LALMs along four dimensions: reliability, generality, audio/text locality, and portability. Results highlight challenges such as preserving intra-attribute knowledge unrelated to the edit, generalizing edits to multimodal reasoning, and maintaining edits under sequential updates. SAKE provides a principled framework to study how knowledge editing extends to the auditory modalities, opening new directions for maintaining and adapting LALMs in more diverse real-world scenarios.
