TrojanPuzzle: Covertly Poisoning Code-Suggestion Models

Hojjat Aghakhani, Wei Dai, Andre Manoel et al. · microsoft-research, mit

With tools like GitHub Copilot, automatic code suggestion is no longer a dream in software engineering. These tools, based on large language models, are typically trained on massive corpora of code mined from unvetted public sources. As a result, these models are susceptible to data poisoning attacks where an adversary manipulates the model's training by injecting malicious data. Poisoning attacks could be designed to influence the model's suggestions at run time for chosen contexts, such as inducing the model into suggesting insecure code payloads. To achieve this, prior attacks explicitly inject the insecure code payload into the training data, making the poison data detectable by static analysis tools that can remove such malicious data from the training set. In this work, we demonstrate two novel attacks, COVERT and TROJANPUZZLE, that can bypass static analysis by planting malicious poison data in out-of-context regions such as docstrings. Our most novel attack, TROJANPUZZLE, goes one step further in generating less suspicious poison data by never explicitly including certain (suspicious) parts of the payload in the poison data, while still inducing a model that suggests the entire payload when completing code (i.e., outside docstrings). This makes TROJANPUZZLE robust against signature-based dataset-cleansing methods that can filter out suspicious sequences from the training data. Our evaluation against models of two sizes demonstrates that both COVERT and TROJANPUZZLE have significant implications for practitioners when selecting code used to train or tune code-suggestion models.

MAFW: A Large-scale, Multi-modal, Compound Affective Database for Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition in the Wild

Yuanyuan Liu, Wei Dai, Chuanxu Feng et al.

Dynamic facial expression recognition (FER) databases provide important data support for affective computing and applications. However, most FER databases are annotated with several basic mutually exclusive emotional categories and contain only one modality, e.g., videos. The monotonous labels and modality cannot accurately imitate human emotions and fulfill applications in the real world. In this paper, we propose MAFW, a large-scale multi-modal compound affective database with 10,045 video-audio clips in the wild. Each clip is annotated with a compound emotional category and a couple of sentences that describe the subjects' affective behaviors in the clip. For the compound emotion annotation, each clip is categorized into one or more of the 11 widely-used emotions, i.e., anger, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness, surprise, contempt, anxiety, helplessness, and disappointment. To ensure high quality of the labels, we filter out the unreliable annotations by an Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm, and then obtain 11 single-label emotion categories and 32 multi-label emotion categories. To the best of our knowledge, MAFW is the first in-the-wild multi-modal database annotated with compound emotion annotations and emotion-related captions. Additionally, we also propose a novel Transformer-based expression snippet feature learning method to recognize the compound emotions leveraging the expression-change relations among different emotions and modalities. Extensive experiments on MAFW database show the advantages of the proposed method over other state-of-the-art methods for both uni- and multi-modal FER. Our MAFW database is publicly available from https://mafw-database.github.io/MAFW.

A Mask Free Neural Network for Monaural Speech Enhancement

Liang Liu, Haixin Guan, Jinlong Ma et al.

In speech enhancement, the lack of clear structural characteristics in the target speech phase requires the use of conservative and cumbersome network frameworks. It seems difficult to achieve competitive performance using direct methods and simple network architectures. However, we propose the MFNet, a direct and simple network that can not only map speech but also map reverse noise. This network is constructed by stacking global local former blocks (GLFBs), which combine the advantages of Mobileblock for global processing and Metaformer architecture for local interaction. Our experimental results demonstrate that our network using mapping method outperforms masking methods, and direct mapping of reverse noise is the optimal solution in strong noise environments. In a horizontal comparison on the 2020 Deep Noise Suppression (DNS) challenge test set without reverberation, to the best of our knowledge, MFNet is the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) mapping model.

Merge Frame Design for Video Stream Switching using Piecewise Constant Functions

Wei Dai, Gene Cheung, Ngai-Man Cheung et al.

The ability to efficiently switch from one pre-encoded video stream to another (e.g., for bitrate adaptation or view switching) is important for many interactive streaming applications. Recently, stream-switching mechanisms based on distributed source coding (DSC) have been proposed. In order to reduce the overall transmission rate, these approaches provide a "merge" mechanism, where information is sent to the decoder such that the exact same frame can be reconstructed given that any one of a known set of side information (SI) frames is available at the decoder (e.g., each SI frame may correspond to a different stream from which we are switching). However, the use of bit-plane coding and channel coding in many DSC approaches leads to complex coding and decoding. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach for merging multiple SI frames, using a piecewise constant (PWC) function as the merge operator. In our approach, for each block to be reconstructed, a series of parameters of these PWC merge functions are transmitted in order to guarantee identical reconstruction given the known side information blocks. We consider two different scenarios. In the first case, a target frame is first given, and then merge parameters are chosen so that this frame can be reconstructed exactly at the decoder. In contrast, in the second scenario, the reconstructed frame and merge parameters are jointly optimized to meet a rate-distortion criteria. Experiments show that for both scenarios, our proposed merge techniques can outperform both a recent approach based on DSC and the SP-frame approach in H.264, in terms of compression efficiency and decoder complexity.
