Towards Fast and Accurate Image-Text Retrieval with Self-Supervised Fine-Grained Alignment

Jiamin Zhuang, Jing Yu, Yang Ding et al.

Image-text retrieval requires the system to bridge the heterogenous gap between vision and language for accurate retrieval while keeping the network lightweight-enough for efficient retrieval. Existing trade-off solutions mainly study from the view of incorporating cross-modal interactions with the independent-embedding framework or leveraging stronger pretrained encoders, which still demand time-consuming similarity measurement or heavyweight model structure in the retrieval stage. In this work, we propose an image-text alignment module SelfAlign on top of the independent-embedding framework, which improves the retrieval accuracy while maintains the retrieval efficiency without extra supervision. SelfAlign contains two collaborative sub-modules that force image-text alignment at both concept level and context level by self-supervised contrastive learning. It does not require cross-modal embedding interactions during training while maintaining independent image and text encoders during retrieval. With comparable time cost, SelfAlign consistently boosts the accuracy of state-of-the-art non-pretraining independent-embedding models respectively by 9.1%, 4.2% and 6.6% in terms of R@sum score on Flickr30K, MSCOCO 1K and MS-COCO 5K datasets. The retrieval accuracy also outperforms most existing interactive-embedding models with orders of magnitude decrease in retrieval time. End-to-End Human Object Interaction Detection with HOI Transformer

Cheng Zou, Bohan Wang, Yue Hu et al.

We propose HOI Transformer to tackle human object interaction (HOI) detection in an end-to-end manner. Current approaches either decouple HOI task into separated stages of object detection and interaction classification or introduce surrogate interaction problem. In contrast, our method, named HOI Transformer, streamlines the HOI pipeline by eliminating the need for many hand-designed components. HOI Transformer reasons about the relations of objects and humans from global image context and directly predicts HOI instances in parallel. A quintuple matching loss is introduced to force HOI predictions in a unified way. Our method is conceptually much simpler and demonstrates improved accuracy. Without bells and whistles, HOI Transformer achieves $26.61\% $ $ AP $ on HICO-DET and $52.9\%$ $AP_{role}$ on V-COCO, surpassing previous methods with the advantage of being much simpler. We hope our approach will serve as a simple and effective alternative for HOI tasks. Code is available at https://github.com/bbepoch/HoiTransformer .

CogTree: Cognition Tree Loss for Unbiased Scene Graph Generation

Jing Yu, Yuan Chai, Yujing Wang et al.

Scene graphs are semantic abstraction of images that encourage visual understanding and reasoning. However, the performance of Scene Graph Generation (SGG) is unsatisfactory when faced with biased data in real-world scenarios. Conventional debiasing research mainly studies from the view of balancing data distribution or learning unbiased models and representations, ignoring the correlations among the biased classes. In this work, we analyze this problem from a novel cognition perspective: automatically building a hierarchical cognitive structure from the biased predictions and navigating that hierarchy to locate the relationships, making the tail relationships receive more attention in a coarse-to-fine mode. To this end, we propose a novel debiasing Cognition Tree (CogTree) loss for unbiased SGG. We first build a cognitive structure CogTree to organize the relationships based on the prediction of a biased SGG model. The CogTree distinguishes remarkably different relationships at first and then focuses on a small portion of easily confused ones. Then, we propose a debiasing loss specially for this cognitive structure, which supports coarse-to-fine distinction for the correct relationships. The loss is model-agnostic and consistently boosting the performance of several state-of-the-art models. The code is available at: https://github.com/CYVincent/Scene-Graph-Transformer-CogTree.

S2F-NER: Exploring Sequence-to-Forest Generation for Complex Entity Recognition

Yongxiu Xu, Heyan Huang, Yue Hu

Named Entity Recognition (NER) remains challenging due to the complex entities, like nested, overlapping, and discontinuous entities. Existing approaches, such as sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) generation and span-based classification, have shown impressive performance on various NER subtasks, but they are difficult to scale to datasets with longer input text because of either exposure bias issue or inefficient computation. In this paper, we propose a novel Sequence-to-Forest generation paradigm, S2F-NER, which can directly extract entities in sentence via a Forest decoder that decode multiple entities in parallel rather than sequentially. Specifically, our model generate each path of each tree in forest autoregressively, where the maximum depth of each tree is three (which is the shortest feasible length for complex NER and is far smaller than the decoding length of Seq2Seq). Based on this novel paradigm, our model can elegantly mitigates the exposure bias problem and keep the simplicity of Seq2Seq. Experimental results show that our model significantly outperforms the baselines on three discontinuous NER datasets and on two nested NER datasets, especially for discontinuous entity recognition.

Descrip3D: Enhancing Large Language Model-based 3D Scene Understanding with Object-Level Text Descriptions

Jintang Xue, Ganning Zhao, Jie-En Yao et al.

Understanding 3D scenes goes beyond simply recognizing objects; it requires reasoning about the spatial and semantic relationships between them. Current 3D scene-language models often struggle with this relational understanding, particularly when visual embeddings alone do not adequately convey the roles and interactions of objects. In this paper, we introduce Descrip3D, a novel and powerful framework that explicitly encodes the relationships between objects using natural language. Unlike previous methods that rely only on 2D and 3D embeddings, Descrip3D enhances each object with a textual description that captures both its intrinsic attributes and contextual relationships. These relational cues are incorporated into the model through a dual-level integration: embedding fusion and prompt-level injection. This allows for unified reasoning across various tasks such as grounding, captioning, and question answering, all without the need for task-specific heads or additional supervision. When evaluated on five benchmark datasets, including ScanRefer, Multi3DRefer, ScanQA, SQA3D, and Scan2Cap, Descrip3D consistently outperforms strong baseline models, demonstrating the effectiveness of language-guided relational representation for understanding complex indoor scenes.

Know Deeper: Knowledge-Conversation Cyclic Utilization Mechanism for Open-domain Dialogue Generation

Yajing Sun, Yue Hu, Luxi Xing et al.

End-to-End intelligent neural dialogue systems suffer from the problems of generating inconsistent and repetitive responses. Existing dialogue models pay attention to unilaterally incorporating personal knowledge into the dialog while ignoring the fact that incorporating the personality-related conversation information into personal knowledge taken as the bilateral information flow boosts the quality of the subsequent conversation. Besides, it is indispensable to control personal knowledge utilization over the conversation level. In this paper, we propose a conversation-adaption multi-view persona aware response generation model that aims at enhancing conversation consistency and alleviating the repetition from two folds. First, we consider conversation consistency from multiple views. From the view of the persona profile, we design a novel interaction module that not only iteratively incorporates personalized knowledge into each turn conversation but also captures the personality-related information from conversation to enhance personalized knowledge semantic representation. From the view of speaking style, we introduce the speaking style vector and feed it into the decoder to keep the speaking style consistency. To avoid conversation repetition, we devise a coverage mechanism to keep track of the activation of personal knowledge utilization. Experiments on both automatic and human evaluation verify the superiority of our model over previous models.

Coarse-to-Careful: Seeking Semantic-related Knowledge for Open-domain Commonsense Question Answering

Luxi Xing, Yue Hu, Jing Yu et al.

It is prevalent to utilize external knowledge to help machine answer questions that need background commonsense, which faces a problem that unlimited knowledge will transmit noisy and misleading information. Towards the issue of introducing related knowledge, we propose a semantic-driven knowledge-aware QA framework, which controls the knowledge injection in a coarse-to-careful fashion. We devise a tailoring strategy to filter extracted knowledge under monitoring of the coarse semantic of question on the knowledge extraction stage. And we develop a semantic-aware knowledge fetching module that engages structural knowledge information and fuses proper knowledge according to the careful semantic of questions in a hierarchical way. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach promotes the performance on the CommonsenseQA dataset comparing with strong baselines.

MCR-Net: A Multi-Step Co-Interactive Relation Network for Unanswerable Questions on Machine Reading Comprehension

Wei Peng, Yue Hu, Jing Yu et al.

Question answering systems usually use keyword searches to retrieve potential passages related to a question, and then extract the answer from passages with the machine reading comprehension methods. However, many questions tend to be unanswerable in the real world. In this case, it is significant and challenging how the model determines when no answer is supported by the passage and abstains from answering. Most of the existing systems design a simple classifier to determine answerability implicitly without explicitly modeling mutual interaction and relation between the question and passage, leading to the poor performance for determining the unanswerable questions. To tackle this problem, we propose a Multi-Step Co-Interactive Relation Network (MCR-Net) to explicitly model the mutual interaction and locate key clues from coarse to fine by introducing a co-interactive relation module. The co-interactive relation module contains a stack of interaction and fusion blocks to continuously integrate and fuse history-guided and current-query-guided clues in an explicit way. Experiments on the SQuAD 2.0 and DuReader datasets show that our model achieves a remarkable improvement, outperforming the BERT-style baselines in literature. Visualization analysis also verifies the importance of the mutual interaction between the question and passage.

IIE-NLP-Eyas at SemEval-2021 Task 4: Enhancing PLM for ReCAM with Special Tokens, Re-Ranking, Siamese Encoders and Back Translation

Yuqiang Xie, Luxi Xing, Wei Peng et al.

This paper introduces our systems for all three subtasks of SemEval-2021 Task 4: Reading Comprehension of Abstract Meaning. To help our model better represent and understand abstract concepts in natural language, we well-design many simple and effective approaches adapted to the backbone model (RoBERTa). Specifically, we formalize the subtasks into the multiple-choice question answering format and add special tokens to abstract concepts, then, the final prediction of question answering is considered as the result of subtasks. Additionally, we employ many finetuning tricks to improve the performance. Experimental results show that our approaches achieve significant performance compared with the baseline systems. Our approaches achieve eighth rank on subtask-1 and tenth rank on subtask-2.

Learning User Representations with Hypercuboids for Recommender Systems

Shuai Zhang, Huoyu Liu, Aston Zhang et al.

Modeling user interests is crucial in real-world recommender systems. In this paper, we present a new user interest representation model for personalized recommendation. Specifically, the key novelty behind our model is that it explicitly models user interests as a hypercuboid instead of a point in the space. In our approach, the recommendation score is learned by calculating a compositional distance between the user hypercuboid and the item. This helps to alleviate the potential geometric inflexibility of existing collaborative filtering approaches, enabling a greater extent of modeling capability. Furthermore, we present two variants of hypercuboids to enhance the capability in capturing the diversities of user interests. A neural architecture is also proposed to facilitate user hypercuboid learning by capturing the activity sequences (e.g., buy and rate) of users. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model via extensive experiments on both public and commercial datasets. Empirical results show that our approach achieves very promising results, outperforming existing state-of-the-art.

Bi-directional Cognitive Thinking Network for Machine Reading Comprehension

Wei Peng, Yue Hu, Luxi Xing et al.

We propose a novel Bi-directional Cognitive Knowledge Framework (BCKF) for reading comprehension from the perspective of complementary learning systems theory. It aims to simulate two ways of thinking in the brain to answer questions, including reverse thinking and inertial thinking. To validate the effectiveness of our framework, we design a corresponding Bi-directional Cognitive Thinking Network (BCTN) to encode the passage and generate a question (answer) given an answer (question) and decouple the bi-directional knowledge. The model has the ability to reverse reasoning questions which can assist inertial thinking to generate more accurate answers. Competitive improvement is observed in DuReader dataset, confirming our hypothesis that bi-directional knowledge helps the QA task. The novel framework shows an interesting perspective on machine reading comprehension and cognitive science.

Uncertainty-Aware Semantic Augmentation for Neural Machine Translation

Xiangpeng Wei, Heng Yu, Yue Hu et al.

As a sequence-to-sequence generation task, neural machine translation (NMT) naturally contains intrinsic uncertainty, where a single sentence in one language has multiple valid counterparts in the other. However, the dominant methods for NMT only observe one of them from the parallel corpora for the model training but have to deal with adequate variations under the same meaning at inference. This leads to a discrepancy of the data distribution between the training and the inference phases. To address this problem, we propose uncertainty-aware semantic augmentation, which explicitly captures the universal semantic information among multiple semantically-equivalent source sentences and enhances the hidden representations with this information for better translations. Extensive experiments on various translation tasks reveal that our approach significantly outperforms the strong baselines and the existing methods.

On Learning Universal Representations Across Languages

Xiangpeng Wei, Rongxiang Weng, Yue Hu et al.

Recent studies have demonstrated the overwhelming advantage of cross-lingual pre-trained models (PTMs), such as multilingual BERT and XLM, on cross-lingual NLP tasks. However, existing approaches essentially capture the co-occurrence among tokens through involving the masked language model (MLM) objective with token-level cross entropy. In this work, we extend these approaches to learn sentence-level representations and show the effectiveness on cross-lingual understanding and generation. Specifically, we propose a Hierarchical Contrastive Learning (HiCTL) method to (1) learn universal representations for parallel sentences distributed in one or multiple languages and (2) distinguish the semantically-related words from a shared cross-lingual vocabulary for each sentence. We conduct evaluations on two challenging cross-lingual tasks, XTREME and machine translation. Experimental results show that the HiCTL outperforms the state-of-the-art XLM-R by an absolute gain of 4.2% accuracy on the XTREME benchmark as well as achieves substantial improvements on both of the high-resource and low-resource English-to-X translation tasks over strong baselines.

IIE-NLP-NUT at SemEval-2020 Task 4: Guiding PLM with Prompt Template Reconstruction Strategy for ComVE

Luxi Xing, Yuqiang Xie, Yue Hu et al.

This paper introduces our systems for the first two subtasks of SemEval Task4: Commonsense Validation and Explanation. To clarify the intention for judgment and inject contrastive information for selection, we propose the input reconstruction strategy with prompt templates. Specifically, we formalize the subtasks into the multiple-choice question answering format and construct the input with the prompt templates, then, the final prediction of question answering is considered as the result of subtasks. Experimental results show that our approaches achieve significant performance compared with the baseline systems. Our approaches secure the third rank on both official test sets of the first two subtasks with an accuracy of 96.4 and an accuracy of 94.3 respectively.

Multiscale Collaborative Deep Models for Neural Machine Translation

Xiangpeng Wei, Heng Yu, Yue Hu et al.

Recent evidence reveals that Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models with deeper neural networks can be more effective but are difficult to train. In this paper, we present a MultiScale Collaborative (MSC) framework to ease the training of NMT models that are substantially deeper than those used previously. We explicitly boost the gradient back-propagation from top to bottom levels by introducing a block-scale collaboration mechanism into deep NMT models. Then, instead of forcing the whole encoder stack directly learns a desired representation, we let each encoder block learns a fine-grained representation and enhance it by encoding spatial dependencies using a context-scale collaboration. We provide empirical evidence showing that the MSC nets are easy to optimize and can obtain improvements of translation quality from considerably increased depth. On IWSLT translation tasks with three translation directions, our extremely deep models (with 72-layer encoders) surpass strong baselines by +2.2~+3.1 BLEU points. In addition, our deep MSC achieves a BLEU score of 30.56 on WMT14 English-German task that significantly outperforms state-of-the-art deep NMT models.

Scene Graph Reasoning with Prior Visual Relationship for Visual Question Answering

Zhuoqian Yang, Zengchang Qin, Jing Yu et al.

One of the key issues of Visual Question Answering (VQA) is to reason with semantic clues in the visual content under the guidance of the question, how to model relational semantics still remains as a great challenge. To fully capture visual semantics, we propose to reason over a structured visual representation - scene graph, with embedded objects and inter-object relationships. This shows great benefit over vanilla vector representations and implicit visual relationship learning. Based on existing visual relationship models, we propose a visual relationship encoder that projects visual relationships into a learned deep semantic space constrained by visual context and language priors. Upon the constructed graph, we propose a Scene Graph Convolutional Network (SceneGCN) to jointly reason the object properties and relational semantics for the correct answer. We demonstrate the model's effectiveness and interpretability on the challenging GQA dataset and the classical VQA 2.0 dataset, remarkably achieving state-of-the-art 54.56% accuracy on GQA compared to the existing best model.
