Class-Incremental Learning via Knowledge Amalgamation

Marcus de Carvalho, Mahardhika Pratama, Jie Zhang et al.

Catastrophic forgetting has been a significant problem hindering the deployment of deep learning algorithms in the continual learning setting. Numerous methods have been proposed to address the catastrophic forgetting problem where an agent loses its generalization power of old tasks while learning new tasks. We put forward an alternative strategy to handle the catastrophic forgetting with knowledge amalgamation (CFA), which learns a student network from multiple heterogeneous teacher models specializing in previous tasks and can be applied to current offline methods. The knowledge amalgamation process is carried out in a single-head manner with only a selected number of memorized samples and no annotations. The teachers and students do not need to share the same network structure, allowing heterogeneous tasks to be adapted to a compact or sparse data representation. We compare our method with competitive baselines from different strategies, demonstrating our approach's advantages.

IntentDial: An Intent Graph based Multi-Turn Dialogue System with Reasoning Path Visualization

Zengguang Hao, Jie Zhang, Binxia Xu et al.

Intent detection and identification from multi-turn dialogue has become a widely explored technique in conversational agents, for example, voice assistants and intelligent customer services. The conventional approaches typically cast the intent mining process as a classification task. Although neural classifiers have proven adept at such classification tasks, the issue of neural network models often impedes their practical deployment in real-world settings. We present a novel graph-based multi-turn dialogue system called , which identifies a user's intent by identifying intent elements and a standard query from a dynamically constructed and extensible intent graph using reinforcement learning. In addition, we provide visualization components to monitor the immediate reasoning path for each turn of a dialogue, which greatly facilitates further improvement of the system.

Segue: Side-information Guided Generative Unlearnable Examples for Facial Privacy Protection in Real World

Zhiling Zhang, Jie Zhang, Kui Zhang et al.

The widespread use of face recognition technology has given rise to privacy concerns, as many individuals are worried about the collection and utilization of their facial data. To address these concerns, researchers are actively exploring the concept of ``unlearnable examples", by adding imperceptible perturbation to data in the model training stage, which aims to prevent the model from learning discriminate features of the target face. However, current methods are inefficient and cannot guarantee transferability and robustness at the same time, causing impracticality in the real world. To remedy it, we propose a novel method called Segue: Side-information guided generative unlearnable examples. Specifically, we leverage a once-trained multiple-used model to generate the desired perturbation rather than the time-consuming gradient-based method. To improve transferability, we introduce side information such as true labels and pseudo labels, which are inherently consistent across different scenarios. For robustness enhancement, a distortion layer is integrated into the training pipeline. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed Segue is much faster than previous methods (1000$\times$) and achieves transferable effectiveness across different datasets and model architectures. Furthermore, it can resist JPEG compression, adversarial training, and some standard data augmentations.

Complementary Fusion of Deep Network and Tree Model for ETA Prediction

YuRui Huang, Jie Zhang, HengDa Bao et al.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is a very important factor in the transportation system. It has attracted increasing attentions and has been widely used as a basic service in navigation systems and intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, we propose a novel solution to the ETA estimation problem, which is an ensemble on tree models and neural networks. We proved the accuracy and robustness of the solution on the A/B list and finally won first place in the SIGSPATIAL 2021 GISCUP competition.

Unlearning during Learning: An Efficient Federated Machine Unlearning Method

Hanlin Gu, Gongxi Zhu, Jie Zhang et al.

In recent years, Federated Learning (FL) has garnered significant attention as a distributed machine learning paradigm. To facilitate the implementation of the right to be forgotten, the concept of federated machine unlearning (FMU) has also emerged. However, current FMU approaches often involve additional time-consuming steps and may not offer comprehensive unlearning capabilities, which renders them less practical in real FL scenarios. In this paper, we introduce FedAU, an innovative and efficient FMU framework aimed at overcoming these limitations. Specifically, FedAU incorporates a lightweight auxiliary unlearning module into the learning process and employs a straightforward linear operation to facilitate unlearning. This approach eliminates the requirement for extra time-consuming steps, rendering it well-suited for FL. Furthermore, FedAU exhibits remarkable versatility. It not only enables multiple clients to carry out unlearning tasks concurrently but also supports unlearning at various levels of granularity, including individual data samples, specific classes, and even at the client level. We conducted extensive experiments on MNIST, CIFAR10, and CIFAR100 datasets to evaluate the performance of FedAU. The results demonstrate that FedAU effectively achieves the desired unlearning effect while maintaining model accuracy. Our code is availiable at https://github.com/Liar-Mask/FedAU.

Dual Expert Distillation Network for Generalized Zero-Shot Learning

Zhijie Rao, Jingcai Guo, Xiaocheng Lu et al.

Zero-shot learning has consistently yielded remarkable progress via modeling nuanced one-to-one visual-attribute correlation. Existing studies resort to refining a uniform mapping function to align and correlate the sample regions and subattributes, ignoring two crucial issues: 1) the inherent asymmetry of attributes; and 2) the unutilized channel information. This paper addresses these issues by introducing a simple yet effective approach, dubbed Dual Expert Distillation Network (DEDN), where two experts are dedicated to coarse- and fine-grained visual-attribute modeling, respectively. Concretely, one coarse expert, namely cExp, has a complete perceptual scope to coordinate visual-attribute similarity metrics across dimensions, and moreover, another fine expert, namely fExp, consists of multiple specialized subnetworks, each corresponds to an exclusive set of attributes. Two experts cooperatively distill from each other to reach a mutual agreement during training. Meanwhile, we further equip DEDN with a newly designed backbone network, i.e., Dual Attention Network (DAN), which incorporates both region and channel attention information to fully exploit and leverage visual semantic knowledge. Experiments on various benchmark datasets indicate a new state-of-the-art.

Optimal control of batch processes via a deterministic Q-learning method

Abdelrahman ElMezain, Mohamed Saleh, Jie Zhang et al.

Dynamic optimization of nonlinear chemical systems -- such as batch reactors -- should be applied online, and the suitable control taken should be according to the current state of the system rather than the current time instant. The recent state of the art methods applies the control based on the current time instant only. This is not suitable for most cases, as it is not robust to possible changes in the system. This paper proposes a Deterministic Q-Learning method to conduct robust online optimization of batch reactors. In this paper, the Q-Learning method is applied on simple batch reactor models; and in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method the results are compared to other dynamic optimization methods. The main advantage of the Q-learning method or the proposed method is that it can accommodate unplanned changes during the process via changing the control action; i.e. the main advantage of the proposed method that it can overcome sudden changes during the reaction. In general, we try to maximize the final product obtained or meet certain specifications of the products (e.g. minimize side products).
