Spatially Parallel All-optical Neural Networks

Jianwei Qin, Yanbing Liu, Yan Liu et al.

All-optical neural networks (AONNs) have emerged as a promising paradigm for ultrafast and energy-efficient computation. These networks typically consist of multiple serially connected layers between input and output layers--a configuration we term spatially series AONNs, with deep neural networks (DNNs) being the most prominent examples. However, such series architectures suffer from progressive signal degradation during information propagation and critically require additional nonlinearity designs to model complex relationships effectively. Here we propose a spatially parallel architecture for all-optical neural networks (SP-AONNs). Unlike series architecture that sequentially processes information through consecutively connected optical layers, SP-AONNs divide the input signal into identical copies fed simultaneously into separate optical layers. Through coherent interference between these parallel linear sub-networks, SP-AONNs inherently enable nonlinear computation without relying on active nonlinear components or iterative updates. We implemented a modular 4F optical system for SP-AONNs and evaluated its performance across multiple image classification benchmarks. Experimental results demonstrate that increasing the number of parallel sub-networks consistently enhances accuracy, improves noise robustness, and expands model expressivity. Our findings highlight spatial parallelism as a practical and scalable strategy for advancing the capabilities of optical neural computing.

CENN: Conservative energy method based on neural networks with subdomains for solving variational problems involving heterogeneous and complex geometries

Yizheng Wang, Jia Sun, Wei Li et al.

We propose a conservative energy method based on neural networks with subdomains for solving variational problems (CENN), where the admissible function satisfying the essential boundary condition without boundary penalty is constructed by the radial basis function (RBF), particular solution neural network, and general neural network. The loss term is the potential energy, optimized based on the principle of minimum potential energy. The loss term at the interfaces has the lower order derivative compared to the strong form PINN with subdomains. The advantage of the proposed method is higher efficiency, more accurate, and less hyperparameters than the strong form PINN with subdomains. Another advantage of the proposed method is that it can apply to complex geometries based on the special construction of the admissible function. To analyze its performance, the proposed method CENN is used to model representative PDEs, the examples include strong discontinuity, singularity, complex boundary, non-linear, and heterogeneous problems. Furthermore, it outperforms other methods when dealing with heterogeneous problems.

Hidden Markov Models for Pipeline Damage Detection Using Piezoelectric Transducers

Mingchi Zhang, Xuemin Chen, Wei Li

Oil and gas pipeline leakages lead to not only enormous economic loss but also environmental disasters. How to detect the pipeline damages including leakages and cracks has attracted much research attention. One of the promising leakage detection method is to use lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers to detect the negative pressure wave when leakage occurs. PZT transducers can generate and detect guided stress waves for crack detection also. However, the negative pressure waves or guided stress waves may not be easily detected with environmental interference, e.g., the oil and gas pipelines in offshore environment. In this paper, a Gaussian mixture model based hidden Markov model (GMM-HMM) method is proposed to detect the pipeline leakage and crack depth in changing environment and time-varying operational conditions. Leakages in different sections or crack depths are considered as different states in hidden Markov models (HMM). Laboratory experiments show that the GMM-HMM method can recognize the crack depth and leakage of pipeline such as whether there is a leakage, where the leakage is.
