Cloud Adversarial Example Generation for Remote Sensing Image Classification

Fei Ma, Yuqiang Feng, Fan Zhang et al.

Most existing adversarial attack methods for remote sensing images merely add adversarial perturbations or patches, resulting in unnatural modifications. Clouds are common atmospheric effects in remote sensing images. Generating clouds on these images can produce adversarial examples better aligning with human perception. In this paper, we propose a Perlin noise based cloud generation attack method. Common Perlin noise based cloud generation is a random, non-optimizable process, which cannot be directly used to attack the target models. We design a Perlin Gradient Generator Network (PGGN), which takes a gradient parameter vector as input and outputs the grids of Perlin noise gradient vectors at different scales. After a series of computations based on the gradient vectors, cloud masks at corresponding scales can be produced. These cloud masks are then weighted and summed depending on a mixing coefficient vector and a scaling factor to produce the final cloud masks. The gradient vector, coefficient vector and scaling factor are collectively represented as a cloud parameter vector, transforming the cloud generation into a black-box optimization problem. The Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is employed to solve for the optimal solution of the cloud parameter vector, achieving a query-based black-box attack. Detailed experiments confirm that this method has strong attack capabilities and achieves high query efficiency. Additionally, we analyze the transferability of the generated adversarial examples and their robustness in adversarial defense scenarios.

Efficient Quantization-Aware Training on Segment Anything Model in Medical Images and Its Deployment

Haisheng Lu, Yujie Fu, Fan Zhang et al.

Medical image segmentation is a critical component of clinical practice, and the state-of-the-art MedSAM model has significantly advanced this field. Nevertheless, critiques highlight that MedSAM demands substantial computational resources during inference. To address this issue, the CVPR 2024 MedSAM on Laptop Challenge was established to find an optimal balance between accuracy and processing speed. In this paper, we introduce a quantization-aware training pipeline designed to efficiently quantize the Segment Anything Model for medical images and deploy it using the OpenVINO inference engine. This pipeline optimizes both training time and disk storage. Our experimental results confirm that this approach considerably enhances processing speed over the baseline, while still achieving an acceptable accuracy level. The training script, inference script, and quantized model are publicly accessible at https://github.com/AVC2-UESTC/QMedSAM.

Noise-Tolerant Paradigm for Training Face Recognition CNNs

Wei Hu, Yangyu Huang, Fan Zhang et al.

Benefit from large-scale training datasets, deep Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs) have achieved impressive results in face recognition(FR). However, tremendous scale of datasets inevitably lead to noisy data, which obviously reduce the performance of the trained CNN models. Kicking out wrong labels from large-scale FR datasets is still very expensive, although some cleaning approaches are proposed. According to the analysis of the whole process of training CNN models supervised by angular margin based loss(AM-Loss) functions, we find that the $θ$ distribution of training samples implicitly reflects their probability of being clean. Thus, we propose a novel training paradigm that employs the idea of weighting samples based on the above probability. Without any prior knowledge of noise, we can train high performance CNN models with large-scale FR datasets. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our training paradigm. Towards Interpretable Geo-localization: a Concept-Aware Global Image-GPS Alignment Framework

Furong Jia, Lanxin Liu, Ce Hou et al.

Worldwide geo-localization involves determining the exact geographic location of images captured globally, typically guided by geographic cues such as climate, landmarks, and architectural styles. Despite advancements in geo-localization models like GeoCLIP, which leverages images and location alignment via contrastive learning for accurate predictions, the interpretability of these models remains insufficiently explored. Current concept-based interpretability methods fail to align effectively with Geo-alignment image-location embedding objectives, resulting in suboptimal interpretability and performance. To address this gap, we propose a novel framework integrating global geo-localization with concept bottlenecks. Our method inserts a Concept-Aware Alignment Module that jointly projects image and location embeddings onto a shared bank of geographic concepts (e.g., tropical climate, mountain, cathedral) and minimizes a concept-level loss, enhancing alignment in a concept-specific subspace and enabling robust interpretability. To our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce interpretability into geo-localization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach surpasses GeoCLIP in geo-localization accuracy and boosts performance across diverse geospatial prediction tasks, revealing richer semantic insights into geographic decision-making processes.

Residual-Recursion Autoencoder for Shape Illustration Images

Qianwei Zhou, Peng Tao, Xiaoxin Li et al.

Shape illustration images (SIIs) are common and important in describing the cross-sections of industrial products. Same as MNIST, the handwritten digit images, SIIs are gray or binary and containing shapes that are surrounded by large areas of blanks. In this work, Residual-Recursion Autoencoder (RRAE) has been proposed to extract low-dimensional features from SIIs while maintaining reconstruction accuracy as high as possible. RRAE will try to reconstruct the original image several times and recursively fill the latest residual image to the reserved channel of the encoder's input before the next trial of reconstruction. As a kind of neural network training framework, RRAE can wrap over other autoencoders and increase their performance. From experiment results, the reconstruction loss is decreased by 86.47% for convolutional autoencoder with high-resolution SIIs, 10.77% for variational autoencoder and 8.06% for conditional variational autoencoder with MNIST.

SAR Target Recognition Using the Multi-aspect-aware Bidirectional LSTM Recurrent Neural Networks

Fan Zhang, Chen Hu, Qiang Yin et al.

The outstanding pattern recognition performance of deep learning brings new vitality to the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR). However, there is a limitation in current deep learning based ATR solution that each learning process only handle one SAR image, namely learning the static scattering information, while missing the space-varying information. It is obvious that multi-aspect joint recognition introduced space-varying scattering information should improve the classification accuracy and robustness. In this paper, a novel multi-aspect-aware method is proposed to achieve this idea through the bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks based space-varying scattering information learning. Specifically, we first select different aspect images to generate the multi-aspect space-varying image sequences. Then, the Gabor filter and three-patch local binary pattern (TPLBP) are progressively implemented to extract a comprehensive spatial features, followed by dimensionality reduction with the Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) network. Finally, we design a bidirectional LSTM recurrent neural network to learn the multi-aspect features with further integrating the softmax classifier to achieve target recognition. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve 99.9% accuracy for 10-class recognition. Besides, its anti-noise and anti-confusion performance are also better than the conventional deep learning based methods.
