S$^4$ST: A Strong, Self-transferable, faSt, and Simple Scale Transformation for Transferable Targeted Attack

Yongxiang Liu, Bowen Peng, Li Liu et al.

Transferable Targeted Attacks (TTAs), which aim to deceive black-box models into predicting specific erroneous labels, face significant challenges due to severe overfitting to surrogate models. Although modifying image features to generate robust semantic patterns of the target class is a promising approach, existing methods heavily rely on large-scale additional data. This dependence undermines the fair evaluation of TTA threats, potentially leading to a false sense of security or unnecessary overreactions. In this paper, we introduce two blind measures, surrogate self-alignment and self-transferability, to analyze the effectiveness and correlations of basic transformations, to enhance data-free attacks under strict black-box constraints. Our findings challenge conventional assumptions: (1) Attacking simple scaling transformations uniquely enhances targeted transferability, outperforming other basic transformations and rivaling leading complex methods; (2) Geometric and color transformations exhibit high internal redundancy despite weak inter-category correlations. These insights drive the design and tuning of S4ST (Strong, Self-transferable, faSt, Simple Scale Transformation), which integrates dimensionally consistent scaling, complementary low-redundancy transformations, and block-wise operations. Extensive experiments on the ImageNet-Compatible dataset demonstrate that S4ST achieves a 77.7% average targeted success rate (tSuc), surpassing existing transformations (+17.2% over H-Aug with only 26% computational time) and SOTA TTA solutions (+6.2% over SASD-WS with 1.2M samples for post-training). Notably, it attains 69.6% and 55.3% average tSuc against three commercial APIs and vision-language models, respectively. This work establishes a new SOTA for TTAs, highlights their potential threats, and calls for a reevaluation of the data dependency in achieving targeted transferability.

RigNet++: Semantic Assisted Repetitive Image Guided Network for Depth Completion

Zhiqiang Yan, Xiang Li, Le Hui et al.

Depth completion aims to recover dense depth maps from sparse ones, where color images are often used to facilitate this task. Recent depth methods primarily focus on image guided learning frameworks. However, blurry guidance in the image and unclear structure in the depth still impede their performance. To tackle these challenges, we explore a repetitive design in our image guided network to gradually and sufficiently recover depth values. Specifically, the repetition is embodied in both the image guidance branch and depth generation branch. In the former branch, we design a dense repetitive hourglass network (DRHN) to extract discriminative image features of complex environments, which can provide powerful contextual instruction for depth prediction. In the latter branch, we present a repetitive guidance (RG) module based on dynamic convolution, in which an efficient convolution factorization is proposed to reduce the complexity while modeling high-frequency structures progressively. Furthermore, in the semantic guidance branch, we utilize the well-known large vision model, i.e., segment anything (SAM), to supply RG with semantic prior. In addition, we propose a region-aware spatial propagation network (RASPN) for further depth refinement based on the semantic prior constraint. Finally, we collect a new dataset termed TOFDC for the depth completion task, which is acquired by the time-of-flight (TOF) sensor and the color camera on smartphones. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on KITTI, NYUv2, Matterport3D, 3D60, VKITTI, and our TOFDC.

Joint Optimization of Tree-based Index and Deep Model for Recommender Systems

Han Zhu, Daqing Chang, Ziru Xu et al.

Large-scale industrial recommender systems are usually confronted with computational problems due to the enormous corpus size. To retrieve and recommend the most relevant items to users under response time limits, resorting to an efficient index structure is an effective and practical solution. The previous work Tree-based Deep Model (TDM) \cite{zhu2018learning} greatly improves recommendation accuracy using tree index. By indexing items in a tree hierarchy and training a user-node preference prediction model satisfying a max-heap like property in the tree, TDM provides logarithmic computational complexity w.r.t. the corpus size, enabling the use of arbitrary advanced models in candidate retrieval and recommendation. In tree-based recommendation methods, the quality of both the tree index and the user-node preference prediction model determines the recommendation accuracy for the most part. We argue that the learning of tree index and preference model has interdependence. Our purpose, in this paper, is to develop a method to jointly learn the index structure and user preference prediction model. In our proposed joint optimization framework, the learning of index and user preference prediction model are carried out under a unified performance measure. Besides, we come up with a novel hierarchical user preference representation utilizing the tree index hierarchy. Experimental evaluations with two large-scale real-world datasets show that the proposed method improves recommendation accuracy significantly. Online A/B test results at a display advertising platform also demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in production environments.

Densely Connected Bidirectional LSTM with Applications to Sentence Classification

Zixiang Ding, Rui Xia, Jianfei Yu et al.

Deep neural networks have recently been shown to achieve highly competitive performance in many computer vision tasks due to their abilities of exploring in a much larger hypothesis space. However, since most deep architectures like stacked RNNs tend to suffer from the vanishing-gradient and overfitting problems, their effects are still understudied in many NLP tasks. Inspired by this, we propose a novel multi-layer RNN model called densely connected bidirectional long short-term memory (DC-Bi-LSTM) in this paper, which essentially represents each layer by the concatenation of its hidden state and all preceding layers' hidden states, followed by recursively passing each layer's representation to all subsequent layers. We evaluate our proposed model on five benchmark datasets of sentence classification. DC-Bi-LSTM with depth up to 20 can be successfully trained and obtain significant improvements over the traditional Bi-LSTM with the same or even less parameters. Moreover, our model has promising performance compared with the state-of-the-art approaches.
