EATFormer: Improving Vision Transformer Inspired by Evolutionary AlgorithmJiangning Zhang, Xiangtai Li, Yabiao Wang et al.
Motivated by biological evolution, this paper explains the rationality of Vision Transformer by analogy with the proven practical evolutionary algorithm (EA) and derives that both have consistent mathematical formulation. Then inspired by effective EA variants, we propose a novel pyramid EATFormer backbone that only contains the proposed EA-based transformer (EAT) block, which consists of three residual parts, i.e., Multi-scale region aggregation, global and local interaction, and feed-forward network modules, to model multi-scale, interactive, and individual information separately. Moreover, we design a task-related head docked with transformer backbone to complete final information fusion more flexibly and improve a modulated deformable MSA to dynamically model irregular locations. Massive quantitative and quantitative experiments on image classification, downstream tasks, and explanatory experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our approach over state-of-the-art methods. E.g., our Mobile (1.8 M), Tiny (6.1 M), Small (24.3 M), and Base (49.0 M) models achieve 69.4, 78.4, 83.1, and 83.9 Top-1 only trained on ImageNet-1K with naive training recipe; EATFormer-Tiny/Small/Base armed Mask-R-CNN obtain 45.4/47.4/49.0 box AP and 41.4/42.9/44.2 mask AP on COCO detection, surpassing contemporary MPViT-T, Swin-T, and Swin-S by 0.6/1.4/0.5 box AP and 0.4/1.3/0.9 mask AP separately with less FLOPs; Our EATFormer-Small/Base achieve 47.3/49.3 mIoU on ADE20K by Upernet that exceeds Swin-T/S by 2.8/1.7. Rethinking Dimensionality Reduction in Grid-based 3D Object DetectionDihe Huang, Ying Chen, Yikang Ding et al.
Bird's eye view (BEV) is widely adopted by most of the current point cloud detectors due to the applicability of well-explored 2D detection techniques. However, existing methods obtain BEV features by simply collapsing voxel or point features along the height dimension, which causes the heavy loss of 3D spatial information. To alleviate the information loss, we propose a novel point cloud detection network based on a Multi-level feature dimensionality reduction strategy, called MDRNet. In MDRNet, the Spatial-aware Dimensionality Reduction (SDR) is designed to dynamically focus on the valuable parts of the object during voxel-to-BEV feature transformation. Furthermore, the Multi-level Spatial Residuals (MSR) is proposed to fuse the multi-level spatial information in the BEV feature maps. Extensive experiments on nuScenes show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. The code will be available upon publication.

TcGAN: Semantic-Aware and Structure-Preserved GANs with Individual Vision Transformer for Fast Arbitrary One-Shot Image GenerationYunliang Jiang, Lili Yan, Xiongtao Zhang et al.
One-shot image generation (OSG) with generative adversarial networks that learn from the internal patches of a given image has attracted world wide attention. In recent studies, scholars have primarily focused on extracting features of images from probabilistically distributed inputs with pure convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, it is quite difficult for CNNs with limited receptive domain to extract and maintain the global structural information. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel structure-preserved method TcGAN with individual vision transformer to overcome the shortcomings of the existing one-shot image generation methods. Specifically, TcGAN preserves global structure of an image during training to be compatible with local details while maintaining the integrity of semantic-aware information by exploiting the powerful long-range dependencies modeling capability of the transformer. We also propose a new scaling formula having scale-invariance during the calculation period, which effectively improves the generated image quality of the OSG model on image super-resolution tasks. We present the design of the TcGAN converter framework, comprehensive experimental as well as ablation studies demonstrating the ability of TcGAN to achieve arbitrary image generation with the fastest running time. Lastly, TcGAN achieves the most excellent performance in terms of applying it to other image processing tasks, e.g., super-resolution as well as image harmonization, the results further prove its superiority.
The Better Angels of Machine Personality: How Personality Relates to LLM SafetyJie Zhang, Dongrui Liu, Chen Qian et al.
Personality psychologists have analyzed the relationship between personality and safety behaviors in human society. Although Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate personality traits, the relationship between personality traits and safety abilities in LLMs still remains a mystery. In this paper, we discover that LLMs' personality traits are closely related to their safety abilities, i.e., toxicity, privacy, and fairness, based on the reliable MBTI-M scale. Meanwhile, the safety alignment generally increases various LLMs' Extraversion, Sensing, and Judging traits. According to such findings, we can edit LLMs' personality traits and improve their safety performance, e.g., inducing personality from ISTJ to ISTP resulted in a relative improvement of approximately 43% and 10% in privacy and fairness performance, respectively. Additionally, we find that LLMs with different personality traits are differentially susceptible to jailbreak. This study pioneers the investigation of LLM safety from a personality perspective, providing new insights into LLM safety enhancement.
HyperSeg: Towards Universal Visual Segmentation with Large Language ModelCong Wei, Yujie Zhong, Haoxian Tan et al.
This paper aims to address universal segmentation for image and video perception with the strong reasoning ability empowered by Visual Large Language Models (VLLMs). Despite significant progress in current unified segmentation methods, limitations in adaptation to both image and video scenarios, as well as the complex reasoning segmentation, make it difficult for them to handle various challenging instructions and achieve an accurate understanding of fine-grained vision-language correlations. We propose HyperSeg, the first VLLM-based universal segmentation model for pixel-level image and video perception, encompassing generic segmentation tasks and more complex reasoning perception tasks requiring powerful reasoning abilities and world knowledge. Besides, to fully leverage the recognition capabilities of VLLMs and the fine-grained visual information, HyperSeg incorporates hybrid entity recognition and fine-grained visual perceiver modules for various segmentation tasks. Combined with the temporal adapter, HyperSeg achieves a comprehensive understanding of temporal information. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of our insights in resolving universal image and video segmentation tasks, including the more complex reasoning perception tasks. Our code is available.
InstructSeg: Unifying Instructed Visual Segmentation with Multi-modal Large Language ModelsCong Wei, Yujie Zhong, Haoxian Tan et al.
Boosted by Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs), text-guided universal segmentation models for the image and video domains have made rapid progress recently. However, these methods are often developed separately for specific domains, overlooking the similarities in task settings and solutions across these two areas. In this paper, we define the union of referring segmentation and reasoning segmentation at both the image and video levels as Instructed Visual Segmentation (IVS). Correspondingly, we propose InstructSeg, an end-to-end segmentation pipeline equipped with MLLMs for IVS. Specifically, we employ an object-aware video perceiver to extract temporal and object information from reference frames, facilitating comprehensive video understanding. Additionally, we introduce vision-guided multi-granularity text fusion to better integrate global and detailed text information with fine-grained visual guidance. By leveraging multi-task and end-to-end training, InstructSeg demonstrates superior performance across diverse image and video segmentation tasks, surpassing both segmentation specialists and MLLM-based methods with a single model. 3D Deep-learning-based Segmentation of Human Skin Sweat Glands and Their 3D Morphological Response to Temperature VariationsShaoyu Pei, Renxiong Wu, Hao Zheng et al.
Skin, the primary regulator of heat exchange, relies on sweat glands for thermoregulation. Alterations in sweat gland morphology play a crucial role in various pathological conditions and clinical diagnoses. Current methods for observing sweat gland morphology are limited by their two-dimensional, in vitro, and destructive nature, underscoring the urgent need for real-time, non-invasive, quantifiable technologies. We proposed a novel three-dimensional (3D) transformer-based multi-object segmentation framework, integrating a sliding window approach, joint spatial-channel attention mechanism, and architectural heterogeneity between shallow and deep layers. Our proposed network enables precise 3D sweat gland segmentation from skin volume data captured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). For the first time, subtle variations of sweat gland 3D morphology in response to temperature changes, have been visualized and quantified. Our approach establishes a benchmark for normal sweat gland morphology and provides a real-time, non-invasive tool for quantifying 3D structural parameters. This enables the study of individual variability and pathological changes in sweat gland structure, advancing dermatological research and clinical applications, including thermoregulation and bromhidrosis treatment.
Koopa: Learning Non-stationary Time Series Dynamics with Koopman PredictorsYong Liu, Chenyu Li, Jianmin Wang et al.
Real-world time series are characterized by intrinsic non-stationarity that poses a principal challenge for deep forecasting models. While previous models suffer from complicated series variations induced by changing temporal distribution, we tackle non-stationary time series with modern Koopman theory that fundamentally considers the underlying time-variant dynamics. Inspired by Koopman theory of portraying complex dynamical systems, we disentangle time-variant and time-invariant components from intricate non-stationary series by Fourier Filter and design Koopman Predictor to advance respective dynamics forward. Technically, we propose Koopa as a novel Koopman forecaster composed of stackable blocks that learn hierarchical dynamics. Koopa seeks measurement functions for Koopman embedding and utilizes Koopman operators as linear portraits of implicit transition. To cope with time-variant dynamics that exhibits strong locality, Koopa calculates context-aware operators in the temporal neighborhood and is able to utilize incoming ground truth to scale up forecast horizon. Besides, by integrating Koopman Predictors into deep residual structure, we ravel out the binding reconstruction loss in previous Koopman forecasters and achieve end-to-end forecasting objective optimization. Compared with the state-of-the-art model, Koopa achieves competitive performance while saving 77.3% training time and 76.0% memory.
Deep Domain Adversarial Adaptation for Photon-efficient ImagingYiwei Chen, Gongxin Yao, Yong Liu et al.
Photon-efficient imaging with the single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) captures the three-dimensional (3D) structure of a scene by only a few detected signal photons per pixel. However, the existing computational methods for photon-efficient imaging are pre-tuned on a restricted scenario or trained on simulated datasets. When applied to realistic scenarios whose signal-to-background ratios (SBR) and other hardware-specific properties differ from those of the original task, the model performance often significantly deteriorates. In this paper, we present a domain adversarial adaptation design to alleviate this domain shift problem by exploiting unlabeled real-world data, with significant resource savings. This method demonstrates superior performance on simulated and real-world experiments using our home-built up-conversion single-photon imaging system, which provides an efficient approach to bypass the lack of ground-truth depth information in implementing computational imaging algorithms for realistic applications.

Robust Visual SLAM with Point and Line FeaturesXingxing Zuo, Xiaojia Xie, Yong Liu et al.
In this paper, we develop a robust efficient visual SLAM system that utilizes heterogeneous point and line features. By leveraging ORB-SLAM [1], the proposed system consists of stereo matching, frame tracking, local mapping, loop detection, and bundle adjustment of both point and line features. In particular, as the main theoretical contributions of this paper, we, for the first time, employ the orthonormal representation as the minimal parameterization to model line features along with point features in visual SLAM and analytically derive the Jacobians of the re-projection errors with respect to the line parameters, which significantly improves the SLAM solution. The proposed SLAM has been extensively tested in both synthetic and real-world experiments whose results demonstrate that the proposed system outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in various scenarios.
