Coral Model Generation from Single Images for Virtual Reality ApplicationsJie Fu, Shun Fu, Mick Grierson
With the rapid development of VR technology, the demand for high-quality 3D models is increasing. Traditional methods struggle with efficiency and quality in large-scale customization. This paper introduces a deep-learning framework that generates high-precision 3D coral models from a single image. Using the Coral dataset, the framework extracts geometric and texture features, performs 3D reconstruction, and optimizes design and material blending. Advanced optimization and polygon count control ensure shape accuracy, detail retention, and flexible output for various complexities, catering to high-quality rendering and real-time interaction needs. The project incorporates Explainable AI (XAI) to transform AI-generated models into interactive "artworks," best viewed in VR and XR. This enhances model interpretability and human-machine collaboration. Real-time feedback in VR interactions displays information like coral species and habitat, enriching user experience. The generated models surpass traditional methods in detail, visual quality, and efficiency. This research offers an intelligent approach to 3D content creation for VR, lowering production barriers, and promoting widespread VR applications. Additionally, integrating XAI provides new insights into AI-generated visual content and advances research in 3D vision interpretability.

Conditional Computation for Continual LearningMin Lin, Jie Fu, Yoshua Bengio
Catastrophic forgetting of connectionist neural networks is caused by the global sharing of parameters among all training examples. In this study, we analyze parameter sharing under the conditional computation framework where the parameters of a neural network are conditioned on each input example. At one extreme, if each input example uses a disjoint set of parameters, there is no sharing of parameters thus no catastrophic forgetting. At the other extreme, if the parameters are the same for every example, it reduces to the conventional neural network. We then introduce a clipped version of maxout networks which lies in the middle, i.e. parameters are shared partially among examples. Based on the parameter sharing analysis, we can locate a limited set of examples that are interfered when learning a new example. We propose to perform rehearsal on this set to prevent forgetting, which is termed as conditional rehearsal. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in an online non-stationary setup, where updates are made after each new example and the distribution of the received example shifts over time.

Integrating active sensing into reactive synthesis with temporal logic constraints under partial observationsJie Fu, Ufuk Topcu
We introduce the notion of online reactive planning with sensing actions for systems with temporal logic constraints in partially observable and dynamic environments. With incomplete information on the dynamic environment, reactive controller synthesis amounts to solving a two-player game with partial observations, which has impractically computational complexity. To alleviate the high computational burden, online replanning via sensing actions avoids solving the strategy in the reactive system under partial observations. Instead, we only solve for a strategy that ensures a given temporal logic specification can be satisfied had the system have complete observations of its environment. Such a strategy is then transformed into one which makes control decisions based on the observed sequence of states (of the interacting system and its environment). When the system encounters a belief---a set including all possible hypotheses the system has for the current state---for which the observation-based strategy is undefined, a sequence of sensing actions are triggered, chosen by an active sensing strategy, to reduce the uncertainty in the system's belief. We show that by alternating between the observation-based strategy and the active sensing strategy, under a mild technical assumption of the set of sensors in the system, the given temporal logic specification can be satisfied with probability 1.
