Panoptic Video Scene Graph Generation

Jingkang Yang, Wenxuan Peng, Xiangtai Li et al. · stanford

Towards building comprehensive real-world visual perception systems, we propose and study a new problem called panoptic scene graph generation (PVSG). PVSG relates to the existing video scene graph generation (VidSGG) problem, which focuses on temporal interactions between humans and objects grounded with bounding boxes in videos. However, the limitation of bounding boxes in detecting non-rigid objects and backgrounds often causes VidSGG to miss key details crucial for comprehensive video understanding. In contrast, PVSG requires nodes in scene graphs to be grounded by more precise, pixel-level segmentation masks, which facilitate holistic scene understanding. To advance research in this new area, we contribute the PVSG dataset, which consists of 400 videos (289 third-person + 111 egocentric videos) with a total of 150K frames labeled with panoptic segmentation masks as well as fine, temporal scene graphs. We also provide a variety of baseline methods and share useful design practices for future work.

WordScape: a Pipeline to extract multilingual, visually rich Documents with Layout Annotations from Web Crawl Data

Maurice Weber, Carlo Siebenschuh, Rory Butler et al.

We introduce WordScape, a novel pipeline for the creation of cross-disciplinary, multilingual corpora comprising millions of pages with annotations for document layout detection. Relating visual and textual items on document pages has gained further significance with the advent of multimodal models. Various approaches proved effective for visual question answering or layout segmentation. However, the interplay of text, tables, and visuals remains challenging for a variety of document understanding tasks. In particular, many models fail to generalize well to diverse domains and new languages due to insufficient availability of training data. WordScape addresses these limitations. Our automatic annotation pipeline parses the Open XML structure of Word documents obtained from the web, jointly providing layout-annotated document images and their textual representations. In turn, WordScape offers unique properties as it (1) leverages the ubiquity of the Word file format on the internet, (2) is readily accessible through the Common Crawl web corpus, (3) is adaptive to domain-specific documents, and (4) offers culturally and linguistically diverse document pages with natural semantic structure and high-quality text. Together with the pipeline, we will additionally release 9.5M urls to word documents which can be processed using WordScape to create a dataset of over 40M pages. Finally, we investigate the quality of text and layout annotations extracted by WordScape, assess the impact on document understanding benchmarks, and demonstrate that manual labeling costs can be substantially reduced.

On the Limitations of Denoising Strategies as Adversarial Defenses

Zhonghan Niu, Zhaoxi Chen, Linyi Li et al.

As adversarial attacks against machine learning models have raised increasing concerns, many denoising-based defense approaches have been proposed. In this paper, we summarize and analyze the defense strategies in the form of symmetric transformation via data denoising and reconstruction (denoted as $F+$ inverse $F$, $F-IF$ Framework). In particular, we categorize these denoising strategies from three aspects (i.e. denoising in the spatial domain, frequency domain, and latent space, respectively). Typically, defense is performed on the entire adversarial example, both image and perturbation are modified, making it difficult to tell how it defends against the perturbations. To evaluate the robustness of these denoising strategies intuitively, we directly apply them to defend against adversarial noise itself (assuming we have obtained all of it), which saving us from sacrificing benign accuracy. Surprisingly, our experimental results show that even if most of the perturbations in each dimension is eliminated, it is still difficult to obtain satisfactory robustness. Based on the above findings and analyses, we propose the adaptive compression strategy for different frequency bands in the feature domain to improve the robustness. Our experiment results show that the adaptive compression strategies enable the model to better suppress adversarial perturbations, and improve robustness compared with existing denoising strategies.
