Neural Network Accelerated Process Design of Polycrystalline MicrostructuresJunrong Lin, Mahmudul Hasan, Pinar Acar et al.
Computational experiments are exploited in finding a well-designed processing path to optimize material structures for desired properties. This requires understanding the interplay between the processing-(micro)structure-property linkages using a multi-scale approach that connects the macro-scale (process parameters) to meso (homogenized properties) and micro (crystallographic texture) scales. Due to the nature of the problem's multi-scale modeling setup, possible processing path choices could grow exponentially as the decision tree becomes deeper, and the traditional simulators' speed reaches a critical computational threshold. To lessen the computational burden for predicting microstructural evolution under given loading conditions, we develop a neural network (NN)-based method with physics-infused constraints. The NN aims to learn the evolution of microstructures under each elementary process. Our method is effective and robust in finding optimal processing paths. In this study, our NN-based method is applied to maximize the homogenized stiffness of a Copper microstructure, and it is found to be 686 times faster while achieving 0.053% error in the resulting homogenized stiffness compared to the traditional finite element simulator on a 10-process experiment.

A Novel Framework for Characterization of Tumor-Immune Spatial Relationships in Tumor MicroenvironmentMahmudul Hasan, Jakub R. Kaczmarzyk, David Paredes et al.
Understanding the impact of tumor biology on the composition of nearby cells often requires characterizing the impact of biologically distinct tumor regions. Biomarkers have been developed to label biologically distinct tumor regions, but challenges arise because of differences in the spatial extent and distribution of differentially labeled regions. In this work, we present a framework for systematically investigating the impact of distinct tumor regions on cells near the tumor borders, accounting their cross spatial distributions. We apply the framework to multiplex immunohistochemistry (mIHC) studies of pancreatic cancer and show its efficacy in demonstrating how biologically different tumor regions impact the immune response in the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, we show that the proposed framework can be extended to largescale whole slide image analysis.
Vision Eagle Attention: a new lens for advancing image classificationMahmudul Hasan
In computer vision tasks, the ability to focus on relevant regions within an image is crucial for improving model performance, particularly when key features are small, subtle, or spatially dispersed. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) typically treat all regions of an image equally, which can lead to inefficient feature extraction. To address this challenge, I have introduced Vision Eagle Attention, a novel attention mechanism that enhances visual feature extraction using convolutional spatial attention. The model applies convolution to capture local spatial features and generates an attention map that selectively emphasizes the most informative regions of the image. This attention mechanism enables the model to focus on discriminative features while suppressing irrelevant background information. I have integrated Vision Eagle Attention into a lightweight ResNet-18 architecture, demonstrating that this combination results in an efficient and powerful model. I have evaluated the performance of the proposed model on three widely used benchmark datasets: FashionMNIST, Intel Image Classification, and OracleMNIST, with a primary focus on image classification. Experimental results show that the proposed approach improves classification accuracy. Additionally, this method has the potential to be extended to other vision tasks, such as object detection, segmentation, and visual tracking, offering a computationally efficient solution for a wide range of vision-based applications. GraDeT-HTR: A Resource-Efficient Bengali Handwritten Text Recognition System utilizing Grapheme-based Tokenizer and Decoder-only TransformerMd. Mahmudul Hasan, Ahmed Nesar Tahsin Choudhury, Mahmudul Hasan et al.
Despite Bengali being the sixth most spoken language in the world, handwritten text recognition (HTR) systems for Bengali remain severely underdeveloped. The complexity of Bengali script--featuring conjuncts, diacritics, and highly variable handwriting styles--combined with a scarcity of annotated datasets makes this task particularly challenging. We present GraDeT-HTR, a resource-efficient Bengali handwritten text recognition system based on a Grapheme-aware Decoder-only Transformer architecture. To address the unique challenges of Bengali script, we augment the performance of a decoder-only transformer by integrating a grapheme-based tokenizer and demonstrate that it significantly improves recognition accuracy compared to conventional subword tokenizers. Our model is pretrained on large-scale synthetic data and fine-tuned on real human-annotated samples, achieving state-of-the-art performance on multiple benchmark datasets.

Software Variants for Hardware Trojan Detection and Resilience in COTS ProcessorsMahmudul Hasan, Jonathan Cruz, Prabuddha Chakraborty et al.
The commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) component based ecosystem provides an attractive system design paradigm due to the drastic reduction in development time and cost compared to custom solutions. However, it brings in a growing concern of trustworthiness arising from the possibility of embedded malicious logic, or hardware Trojans in COTS components. Existing trust-verification approaches are typically not applicable to COTS hardware due to the absence of golden models and the lack of observability of internal signals. In this work, we propose a novel approach for runtime Trojan detection and resilience in untrusted COTS processors through judicious modifications in software. The proposed approach does not rely on any hardware redundancy or architectural modification and hence seamlessly integrates with the COTS-based system design process. Trojan resilience is achieved through the execution of multiple functionally equivalent software variants. We have developed and implemented a solution for compiler-based automatic generation of program variants, metric-guided selection of variants, and their integration in a single executable. To evaluate the proposed approach, we first analyzed the effectiveness of program variants in avoiding the activation of a random pool of Trojans. By implementing several Trojans in an OpenRISC 1000 processor, we analyzed the detectability and resilience during Trojan activation in both single and multiple variants. We also present delay and code size overhead for the automatically generated variants for several programs and discuss future research directions to reduce the overhead.

Comparisonal study of Deep Learning approaches on Retinal OCT ImageNowshin Tasnim, Mahmudul Hasan, Ishrak Islam
In medical science, the use of computer science in disease detection and diagnosis is gaining popularity. Previously, the detection of disease used to take a significant amount of time and was less reliable. Machine learning (ML) techniques employed in recent biomedical researches are making revolutionary changes by gaining higher accuracy with more concise timing. At present, it is even possible to automatically detect diseases from the scanned images with the help of ML. In this research, we have taken such an attempt to detect retinal diseases from optical coherence tomography (OCT) X-ray images. Here, we propose a deep learning (DL) based approach in detecting retinal diseases from OCT images which can identify three conditions of the retina. Four different models used in this approach are compared with each other. On the test set, the detection accuracy is 98.00\% for a vanilla convolutional neural network (CNN) model, 99.07\% for Xception model, 97.00\% for ResNet50 model, and 99.17\% for MobileNetV2 model. The MobileNetV2 model acquires the highest accuracy, and the closest to the highest is the Xception model. The proposed approach has a potential impact on creating a tool for automatically detecting retinal diseases.
