Affective Video Content Analysis: Decade Review and New Perspectives

Video content is rich in semantics and has the ability to evoke various emotions in viewers. In recent years, with the rapid development of affective computing and the explosive growth of visual data, affective video content analysis (AVCA) as an essential branch of affective computing has become a widely researched topic. In this study, we comprehensively review the development of AVCA over the past decade, particularly focusing on the most advanced methods adopted to address the three major challenges of video feature extraction, expression subjectivity, and multimodal feature fusion. We first introduce the widely used emotion representation models in AVCA and describe commonly used datasets. We summarize and compare representative methods in the following aspects: (1) unimodal AVCA models, including facial expression recognition and posture emotion recognition; (2) multimodal AVCA models, including feature fusion, decision fusion, and attention-based multimodal models; (3) model performance evaluation standards. Finally, we discuss future challenges and promising research directions, such as emotion recognition and public opinion analysis, human-computer interaction, and emotional intelligence.

StarVC: A Unified Auto-Regressive Framework for Joint Text and Speech Generation in Voice Conversion

Voice Conversion (VC) modifies speech to match a target speaker while preserving linguistic content. Traditional methods usually extract speaker information directly from speech while neglecting the explicit utilization of linguistic content. Since VC fundamentally involves disentangling speaker identity from linguistic content, leveraging structured semantic features could enhance conversion performance. However, previous attempts to incorporate semantic features into VC have shown limited effectiveness, motivating the integration of explicit text modeling. We propose StarVC, a unified autoregressive VC framework that first predicts text tokens before synthesizing acoustic features. The experiments demonstrate that StarVC outperforms conventional VC methods in preserving both linguistic content (i.e., WER and CER) and speaker characteristics (i.e., SECS and MOS). Revisiting Interpolation Augmentation for Speech-to-Text Generation

Speech-to-text (S2T) generation systems frequently face challenges in low-resource scenarios, primarily due to the lack of extensive labeled datasets. One emerging solution is constructing virtual training samples by interpolating inputs and labels, which has notably enhanced system generalization in other domains. Despite its potential, this technique's application in S2T tasks has remained under-explored. In this paper, we delve into the utility of interpolation augmentation, guided by several pivotal questions. Our findings reveal that employing an appropriate strategy in interpolation augmentation significantly enhances performance across diverse tasks, architectures, and data scales, offering a promising avenue for more robust S2T systems in resource-constrained settings.

Analyzing Linguistic Complexity and Scientific Impact

The number of publications and the number of citations received have become the most common indicators of scholarly success. In this context, scientific writing increasingly plays an important role in scholars' scientific careers. To understand the relationship between scientific writing and scientific impact, this paper selected 12 variables of linguistic complexity as a proxy for depicting scientific writing. We then analyzed these features from 36,400 full-text Biology articles and 1,797 full-text Psychology articles. These features were compared to the scientific impact of articles, grouped into high, medium, and low categories. The results suggested no practical significant relationship between linguistic complexity and citation strata in either discipline. This suggests that textual complexity plays little role in scientific impact in our data sets.

Examining Scientific Writing Styles from the Perspective of Linguistic Complexity

Publishing articles in high-impact English journals is difficult for scholars around the world, especially for non-native English-speaking scholars (NNESs), most of whom struggle with proficiency in English. In order to uncover the differences in English scientific writing between native English-speaking scholars (NESs) and NNESs, we collected a large-scale data set containing more than 150,000 full-text articles published in PLoS between 2006 and 2015. We divided these articles into three groups according to the ethnic backgrounds of the first and corresponding authors, obtained by Ethnea, and examined the scientific writing styles in English from a two-fold perspective of linguistic complexity: (1) syntactic complexity, including measurements of sentence length and sentence complexity; and (2) lexical complexity, including measurements of lexical diversity, lexical density, and lexical sophistication. The observations suggest marginal differences between groups in syntactical and lexical complexity.
