TumorCP: A Simple but Effective Object-Level Data Augmentation for Tumor Segmentation

Jiawei Yang, Yao Zhang, Yuan Liang et al.

Deep learning models are notoriously data-hungry. Thus, there is an urging need for data-efficient techniques in medical image analysis, where well-annotated data are costly and time consuming to collect. Motivated by the recently revived "Copy-Paste" augmentation, we propose TumorCP, a simple but effective object-level data augmentation method tailored for tumor segmentation. TumorCP is online and stochastic, providing unlimited augmentation possibilities for tumors' subjects, locations, appearances, as well as morphologies. Experiments on kidney tumor segmentation task demonstrate that TumorCP surpasses the strong baseline by a remarkable margin of 7.12% on tumor Dice. Moreover, together with image-level data augmentation, it beats the current state-of-the-art by 2.32% on tumor Dice. Comprehensive ablation studies are performed to validate the effectiveness of TumorCP. Meanwhile, we show that TumorCP can lead to striking improvements in extremely low-data regimes. Evaluated with only 10% labeled data, TumorCP significantly boosts tumor Dice by 21.87%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first work exploring and extending the "Copy-Paste" design in medical imaging domain. Code is available at: https://github.com/YaoZhang93/TumorCP.

AttackPilot: Autonomous Inference Attacks Against ML Services With LLM-Based Agents

Yixin Wu, Rui Wen, Chi Cui et al.

Inference attacks have been widely studied and offer a systematic risk assessment of ML services; however, their implementation and the attack parameters for optimal estimation are challenging for non-experts. The emergence of advanced large language models presents a promising yet largely unexplored opportunity to develop autonomous agents as inference attack experts, helping address this challenge. In this paper, we propose AttackPilot, an autonomous agent capable of independently conducting inference attacks without human intervention. We evaluate it on 20 target services. The evaluation shows that our agent, using GPT-4o, achieves a 100.0% task completion rate and near-expert attack performance, with an average token cost of only $0.627 per run. The agent can also be powered by many other representative LLMs and can adaptively optimize its strategy under service constraints. We further perform trace analysis, demonstrating that design choices, such as a multi-agent framework and task-specific action spaces, effectively mitigate errors such as bad plans, inability to follow instructions, task context loss, and hallucinations. We anticipate that such agents could empower non-expert ML service providers, auditors, or regulators to systematically assess the risks of ML services without requiring deep domain expertise.

Learning Rich Features for Gait Recognition by Integrating Skeletons and Silhouettes

Yunjie Peng, Kang Ma, Yang Zhang et al.

Gait recognition captures gait patterns from the walking sequence of an individual for identification. Most existing gait recognition methods learn features from silhouettes or skeletons for the robustness to clothing, carrying, and other exterior factors. The combination of the two data modalities, however, is not fully exploited. Previous multimodal gait recognition methods mainly employ the skeleton to assist the local feature extraction where the intrinsic discrimination of the skeleton data is ignored. This paper proposes a simple yet effective Bimodal Fusion (BiFusion) network which mines discriminative gait patterns in skeletons and integrates with silhouette representations to learn rich features for identification. Particularly, the inherent hierarchical semantics of body joints in a skeleton is leveraged to design a novel Multi-Scale Gait Graph (MSGG) network for the feature extraction of skeletons. Extensive experiments on CASIA-B and OUMVLP demonstrate both the superiority of the proposed MSGG network in modeling skeletons and the effectiveness of the bimodal fusion for gait recognition. Under the most challenging condition of walking in different clothes on CASIA-B, our method achieves the rank-1 accuracy of 92.1%.

Semi-supervised Cardiac Image Segmentation via Label Propagation and Style Transfer

Yao Zhang, Jiawei Yang, Feng Hou et al.

Accurate segmentation of cardiac structures can assist doctors to diagnose diseases, and to improve treatment planning, which is highly demanded in the clinical practice. However, the shortage of annotation and the variance of the data among different vendors and medical centers restrict the performance of advanced deep learning methods. In this work, we present a fully automatic method to segment cardiac structures including the left (LV) and right ventricle (RV) blood pools, as well as for the left ventricular myocardium (MYO) in MRI volumes. Specifically, we design a semi-supervised learning method to leverage unlabelled MRI sequence timeframes by label propagation. Then we exploit style transfer to reduce the variance among different centers and vendors for more robust cardiac image segmentation. We evaluate our method in the M&Ms challenge 7 , ranking 2nd place among 14 competitive teams.

Improved YOLOv3 Object Classification in Intelligent Transportation System

Yang Zhang, Changhui Hu, Xiaobo Lu

The technology of vehicle and driver detection in Intelligent Transportation System(ITS) is a hot topic in recent years. In particular, the driver detection is still a challenging problem which is conductive to supervising traffic order and maintaining public safety. In this paper, an algorithm based on YOLOv3 is proposed to realize the detection and classification of vehicles, drivers, and people on the highway, so as to achieve the purpose of distinguishing driver and passenger and form a one-to-one correspondence between vehicles and drivers. The proposed model and contrast experiment are conducted on our self-build traffic driver's face database. The effectiveness of our proposed algorithm is validated by extensive experiments and verified under various complex highway conditions. Compared with other advanced vehicle and driver detection technologies, the model has a good performance and is robust to road blocking, different attitudes, and extreme lighting.

PolarNet: An Improved Grid Representation for Online LiDAR Point Clouds Semantic Segmentation

Yang Zhang, Zixiang Zhou, Philip David et al.

The need for fine-grained perception in autonomous driving systems has resulted in recently increased research on online semantic segmentation of single-scan LiDAR. Despite the emerging datasets and technological advancements, it remains challenging due to three reasons: (1) the need for near-real-time latency with limited hardware; (2) uneven or even long-tailed distribution of LiDAR points across space; and (3) an increasing number of extremely fine-grained semantic classes. In an attempt to jointly tackle all the aforementioned challenges, we propose a new LiDAR-specific, nearest-neighbor-free segmentation algorithm - PolarNet. Instead of using common spherical or bird's-eye-view projection, our polar bird's-eye-view representation balances the points across grid cells in a polar coordinate system, indirectly aligning a segmentation network's attention with the long-tailed distribution of the points along the radial axis. We find that our encoding scheme greatly increases the mIoU in three drastically different segmentation datasets of real urban LiDAR single scans while retaining near real-time throughput.

AlphaStock: A Buying-Winners-and-Selling-Losers Investment Strategy using Interpretable Deep Reinforcement Attention Networks

Jingyuan Wang, Yang Zhang, Ke Tang et al.

Recent years have witnessed the successful marriage of finance innovations and AI techniques in various finance applications including quantitative trading (QT). Despite great research efforts devoted to leveraging deep learning (DL) methods for building better QT strategies, existing studies still face serious challenges especially from the side of finance, such as the balance of risk and return, the resistance to extreme loss, and the interpretability of strategies, which limit the application of DL-based strategies in real-life financial markets. In this work, we propose AlphaStock, a novel reinforcement learning (RL) based investment strategy enhanced by interpretable deep attention networks, to address the above challenges. Our main contributions are summarized as follows: i) We integrate deep attention networks with a Sharpe ratio-oriented reinforcement learning framework to achieve a risk-return balanced investment strategy; ii) We suggest modeling interrelationships among assets to avoid selection bias and develop a cross-asset attention mechanism; iii) To our best knowledge, this work is among the first to offer an interpretable investment strategy using deep reinforcement learning models. The experiments on long-periodic U.S. and Chinese markets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of AlphaStock over diverse market states. It turns out that AlphaStock tends to select the stocks as winners with high long-term growth, low volatility, high intrinsic value, and being undervalued recently.
