Flash STU: Fast Spectral Transform Units

Y. Isabel Liu, Windsor Nguyen, Yagiz Devre et al. · princeton

Recent advances in state-space model architectures have shown great promise for efficient sequence modeling, but challenges remain in balancing computational efficiency with model expressiveness. We propose the Flash STU architecture, a hybrid model that interleaves spectral state space model layers with sliding window attention, enabling scalability to billions of parameters for language modeling while maintaining a near-linear time complexity. We evaluate the Flash STU and its variants on diverse sequence prediction tasks, including linear dynamical systems, robotics control, and language modeling. We find that, given a fixed parameter budget, the Flash STU architecture consistently outperforms the Transformer and other leading state-space models such as S4 and Mamba-2.

Recover, Discover, Plan: Learning Skills and Concepts from Robot Failures

Bowen Li, Mayank Mishra, Y. Isabel Liu et al.

Intelligent robots should not only recover from failures, but also acquire the abstract knowledge needed to avoid them in the future. While reinforcement learning (RL) can learn reactive recovery behaviors, training a separate policy for every distinct failure mode is highly inefficient. We introduce Recovery-Driven Synthesis of Relational Concepts (ReSYNC), the first approach that progressively discovers and refines state abstractions (relational predicates) from failure-recovery experience to support abstract planning. Unlike purely reactive methods, ReSYNC jointly learns skills and concepts through an incremental dual-learning process. In the skill-learning phase, the robot uses RL to learn to recover from failures seen in training tasks. In the concept-learning phase, the robot discovers new relational predicates and refines its abstract planning model to explain and generalize the learned recovery behaviors. This interaction enables ReSYNC to convert local recoveries seen during training into global failure avoidance at test time. Across four simulated domains, we show that ReSYNC's ability to continually expand and refine its abstraction library allows it to solve long-horizon, previously unseen problems, outperforming strong baselines by over 50%. Additionally, we demonstrate sim-to-real transfer of ReSYNC, where it performs real-world non-prehensile manipulation skills and generalizes to unseen scenarios through abstract planning. Overall, ReSYNC represents a significant step toward robots that autonomously acquire abstractions for scalable, failure-aware planning in the physical world.

A Concept Knowledge-Driven Keywords Retrieval Framework for Sponsored Search

Yijiang Lian, Yubo Liu, Zhicong Ye et al.

In sponsored search, retrieving synonymous keywords for exact match type is important for accurately targeted advertising. Data-driven deep learning-based method has been proposed to tackle this problem. An apparent disadvantage of this method is its poor generalization performance on entity-level long-tail instances, even though they might share similar concept-level patterns with frequent instances. With the help of a large knowledge base, we find that most commercial synonymous query-keyword pairs can be abstracted into meaningful conceptual patterns through concept tagging. Based on this fact, we propose a novel knowledge-driven conceptual retrieval framework to mitigate this problem, which consists of three parts: data conceptualization, matching via conceptual patterns and concept-augmented discrimination. Both offline and online experiments show that our method is very effective. This framework has been successfully applied to Baidu's sponsored search system, which yields a significant improvement in revenue.
