Identification of Causal Relationship between Amyloid-beta Accumulation and Alzheimer's Disease Progression via Counterfactual Inference

Haixing Dai, Mengxuan Hu, Qing Li et al.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is beginning with amyloidosis, followed by neuronal loss and deterioration in structure, function, and cognition. The accumulation of amyloid-beta in the brain, measured through 18F-florbetapir (AV45) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, has been widely used for early diagnosis of AD. However, the relationship between amyloid-beta accumulation and AD pathophysiology remains unclear, and causal inference approaches are needed to uncover how amyloid-beta levels can impact AD development. In this paper, we propose a graph varying coefficient neural network (GVCNet) for estimating the individual treatment effect with continuous treatment levels using a graph convolutional neural network. We highlight the potential of causal inference approaches, including GVCNet, for measuring the regional causal connections between amyloid-beta accumulation and AD pathophysiology, which may serve as a robust tool for early diagnosis and tailored care.

Multi-branch and Multi-scale Attention Learning for Fine-Grained Visual Categorization

Fan Zhang, Meng Li, Guisheng Zhai et al.

ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC) is one of the most authoritative academic competitions in the field of Computer Vision (CV) in recent years. But applying ILSVRC's annual champion directly to fine-grained visual categorization (FGVC) tasks does not achieve good performance. To FGVC tasks, the small inter-class variations and the large intra-class variations make it a challenging problem. Our attention object location module (AOLM) can predict the position of the object and attention part proposal module (APPM) can propose informative part regions without the need of bounding-box or part annotations. The obtained object images not only contain almost the entire structure of the object, but also contains more details, part images have many different scales and more fine-grained features, and the raw images contain the complete object. The three kinds of training images are supervised by our multi-branch network. Therefore, our multi-branch and multi-scale learning network(MMAL-Net) has good classification ability and robustness for images of different scales. Our approach can be trained end-to-end, while provides short inference time. Through the comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our approach can achieves state-of-the-art results on CUB-200-2011, FGVC-Aircraft and Stanford Cars datasets. Our code will be available at https://github.com/ZF1044404254/MMAL-Net

SpikeSTAG: Spatial-Temporal Forecasting via GNN-SNN Collaboration

Bang Hu, Changze Lv, Mingjie Li et al.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs), inspired by the spiking behavior of biological neurons, offer a distinctive approach for capturing the complexities of temporal data. However, their potential for spatial modeling in multivariate time-series forecasting remains largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, we introduce a brand new SNN architecture, which is among the first to seamlessly integrate graph structural learning with spike-based temporal processing for multivariate time-series forecasting. Specifically, we first embed time features and an adaptive matrix, eliminating the need for predefined graph structures. We then further learn sequence features through the Observation (OBS) Block. Building upon this, our Multi-Scale Spike Aggregation (MSSA) hierarchically aggregates neighborhood information through spiking SAGE layers, enabling multi-hop feature extraction while eliminating the need for floating-point operations. Finally, we propose a Dual-Path Spike Fusion (DSF) Block to integrate spatial graph features and temporal dynamics via a spike-gated mechanism, combining LSTM-processed sequences with spiking self-attention outputs, effectively improve the model accuracy of long sequence datasets. Experiments show that our model surpasses the state-of-the-art SNN-based iSpikformer on all datasets and outperforms traditional temporal models at long horizons, thereby establishing a new paradigm for efficient spatial-temporal modeling.

DeepUNet: A Deep Fully Convolutional Network for Pixel-level Sea-Land Segmentation

Ruirui Li, Wenjie Liu, Lei Yang et al.

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental research in remote sensing image processing. Because of the complex maritime environment, the sea-land segmentation is a challenging task. Although the neural network has achieved excellent performance in semantic segmentation in the last years, there are a few of works using CNN for sea-land segmentation and the results could be further improved. This paper proposes a novel deep convolution neural network named DeepUNet. Like the U-Net, its structure has a contracting path and an expansive path to get high resolution output. But differently, the DeepUNet uses DownBlocks instead of convolution layers in the contracting path and uses UpBlock in the expansive path. The two novel blocks bring two new connections that are U-connection and Plus connection. They are promoted to get more precise segmentation results. To verify our network architecture, we made a new challenging sea-land dataset and compare the DeepUNet on it with the SegNet and the U-Net. Experimental results show that DeepUNet achieved good performance compared with other architectures, especially in high-resolution remote sensing imagery.
