A Whac-A-Mole Dilemma: Shortcuts Come in Multiples Where Mitigating One Amplifies Others

Zhiheng Li, Ivan Evtimov, Albert Gordo et al. · amazon-science

Machine learning models have been found to learn shortcuts -- unintended decision rules that are unable to generalize -- undermining models' reliability. Previous works address this problem under the tenuous assumption that only a single shortcut exists in the training data. Real-world images are rife with multiple visual cues from background to texture. Key to advancing the reliability of vision systems is understanding whether existing methods can overcome multiple shortcuts or struggle in a Whac-A-Mole game, i.e., where mitigating one shortcut amplifies reliance on others. To address this shortcoming, we propose two benchmarks: 1) UrbanCars, a dataset with precisely controlled spurious cues, and 2) ImageNet-W, an evaluation set based on ImageNet for watermark, a shortcut we discovered affects nearly every modern vision model. Along with texture and background, ImageNet-W allows us to study multiple shortcuts emerging from training on natural images. We find computer vision models, including large foundation models -- regardless of training set, architecture, and supervision -- struggle when multiple shortcuts are present. Even methods explicitly designed to combat shortcuts struggle in a Whac-A-Mole dilemma. To tackle this challenge, we propose Last Layer Ensemble, a simple-yet-effective method to mitigate multiple shortcuts without Whac-A-Mole behavior. Our results surface multi-shortcut mitigation as an overlooked challenge critical to advancing the reliability of vision systems. ControlLLM: Augment Language Models with Tools by Searching on Graphs

Zhaoyang Liu, Zeqiang Lai, Zhangwei Gao et al.

We present ControlLLM, a novel framework that enables large language models (LLMs) to utilize multi-modal tools for solving complex real-world tasks. Despite the remarkable performance of LLMs, they still struggle with tool invocation due to ambiguous user prompts, inaccurate tool selection and parameterization, and inefficient tool scheduling. To overcome these challenges, our framework comprises three key components: (1) a \textit{task decomposer} that breaks down a complex task into clear subtasks with well-defined inputs and outputs; (2) a \textit{Thoughts-on-Graph (ToG) paradigm} that searches the optimal solution path on a pre-built tool graph, which specifies the parameter and dependency relations among different tools; and (3) an \textit{execution engine with a rich toolbox} that interprets the solution path and runs the tools efficiently on different computational devices. We evaluate our framework on diverse tasks involving image, audio, and video processing, demonstrating its superior accuracy, efficiency, and versatility compared to existing methods. The code is at https://github.com/OpenGVLab/ControlLLM.

Mixed Attention Network for Cross-domain Sequential Recommendation

Guanyu Lin, Chen Gao, Yu Zheng et al.

In modern recommender systems, sequential recommendation leverages chronological user behaviors to make effective next-item suggestions, which suffers from data sparsity issues, especially for new users. One promising line of work is the cross-domain recommendation, which trains models with data across multiple domains to improve the performance in data-scarce domains. Recent proposed cross-domain sequential recommendation models such as PiNet and DASL have a common drawback relying heavily on overlapped users in different domains, which limits their usage in practical recommender systems. In this paper, we propose a Mixed Attention Network (MAN) with local and global attention modules to extract the domain-specific and cross-domain information. Firstly, we propose a local/global encoding layer to capture the domain-specific/cross-domain sequential pattern. Then we propose a mixed attention layer with item similarity attention, sequence-fusion attention, and group-prototype attention to capture the local/global item similarity, fuse the local/global item sequence, and extract the user groups across different domains, respectively. Finally, we propose a local/global prediction layer to further evolve and combine the domain-specific and cross-domain interests. Experimental results on two real-world datasets (each with two domains) demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model. Further study also illustrates that our proposed method and components are model-agnostic and effective, respectively. The code and data are available at https://github.com/Guanyu-Lin/MAN.

Side4Video: Spatial-Temporal Side Network for Memory-Efficient Image-to-Video Transfer Learning

Huanjin Yao, Wenhao Wu, Zhiheng Li · amazon-science

Large pre-trained vision models achieve impressive success in computer vision. However, fully fine-tuning large models for downstream tasks, particularly in video understanding, can be prohibitively computationally expensive. Recent studies turn their focus towards efficient image-to-video transfer learning. Nevertheless, existing efficient fine-tuning methods lack attention to training memory usage and exploration of transferring a larger model to the video domain. In this paper, we present a novel Spatial-Temporal Side Network for memory-efficient fine-tuning large image models to video understanding, named Side4Video. Specifically, we introduce a lightweight spatial-temporal side network attached to the frozen vision model, which avoids the backpropagation through the heavy pre-trained model and utilizes multi-level spatial features from the original image model. Extremely memory-efficient architecture enables our method to reduce 75% memory usage than previous adapter-based methods. In this way, we can transfer a huge ViT-E (4.4B) for video understanding tasks which is 14x larger than ViT-L (304M). Our approach achieves remarkable performance on various video datasets across unimodal and cross-modal tasks (i.e., action recognition and text-video retrieval), especially in Something-Something V1&V2 (67.3% & 74.6%), Kinetics-400 (88.6%), MSR-VTT (52.3%), MSVD (56.1%) and VATEX (68.8%). We release our code at https://github.com/HJYao00/Side4Video.

Motion-to-Matching: A Mixed Paradigm for 3D Single Object Tracking

Zhiheng Li, Yu Lin, Yubo Cui et al.

3D single object tracking with LiDAR points is an important task in the computer vision field. Previous methods usually adopt the matching-based or motion-centric paradigms to estimate the current target status. However, the former is sensitive to the similar distractors and the sparseness of point cloud due to relying on appearance matching, while the latter usually focuses on short-term motion clues (eg. two frames) and ignores the long-term motion pattern of target. To address these issues, we propose a mixed paradigm with two stages, named MTM-Tracker, which combines motion modeling with feature matching into a single network. Specifically, in the first stage, we exploit the continuous historical boxes as motion prior and propose an encoder-decoder structure to locate target coarsely. Then, in the second stage, we introduce a feature interaction module to extract motion-aware features from consecutive point clouds and match them to refine target movement as well as regress other target states. Extensive experiments validate that our paradigm achieves competitive performance on large-scale datasets (70.9% in KITTI and 51.70% in NuScenes). The code will be open soon at https://github.com/LeoZhiheng/MTM-Tracker.git.

Discover and Mitigate Unknown Biases with Debiasing Alternate Networks

Zhiheng Li, Anthony Hoogs, Chenliang Xu · amazon-science

Deep image classifiers have been found to learn biases from datasets. To mitigate the biases, most previous methods require labels of protected attributes (e.g., age, skin tone) as full-supervision, which has two limitations: 1) it is infeasible when the labels are unavailable; 2) they are incapable of mitigating unknown biases -- biases that humans do not preconceive. To resolve those problems, we propose Debiasing Alternate Networks (DebiAN), which comprises two networks -- a Discoverer and a Classifier. By training in an alternate manner, the discoverer tries to find multiple unknown biases of the classifier without any annotations of biases, and the classifier aims at unlearning the biases identified by the discoverer. While previous works evaluate debiasing results in terms of a single bias, we create Multi-Color MNIST dataset to better benchmark mitigation of multiple biases in a multi-bias setting, which not only reveals the problems in previous methods but also demonstrates the advantage of DebiAN in identifying and mitigating multiple biases simultaneously. We further conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets, showing that the discoverer in DebiAN can identify unknown biases that may be hard to be found by humans. Regarding debiasing, DebiAN achieves strong bias mitigation performance.

You Only Need a Good Embeddings Extractor to Fix Spurious Correlations

Raghav Mehta, Vítor Albiero, Li Chen et al. · amazon-science

Spurious correlations in training data often lead to robustness issues since models learn to use them as shortcuts. For example, when predicting whether an object is a cow, a model might learn to rely on its green background, so it would do poorly on a cow on a sandy background. A standard dataset for measuring state-of-the-art on methods mitigating this problem is Waterbirds. The best method (Group Distributionally Robust Optimization - GroupDRO) currently achieves 89\% worst group accuracy and standard training from scratch on raw images only gets 72\%. GroupDRO requires training a model in an end-to-end manner with subgroup labels. In this paper, we show that we can achieve up to 90\% accuracy without using any sub-group information in the training set by simply using embeddings from a large pre-trained vision model extractor and training a linear classifier on top of it. With experiments on a wide range of pre-trained models and pre-training datasets, we show that the capacity of the pre-training model and the size of the pre-training dataset matters. Our experiments reveal that high capacity vision transformers perform better compared to high capacity convolutional neural networks, and larger pre-training dataset leads to better worst-group accuracy on the spurious correlation dataset.

Skip-Plan: Procedure Planning in Instructional Videos via Condensed Action Space Learning

Zhiheng Li, Wenjia Geng, Muheng Li et al.

In this paper, we propose Skip-Plan, a condensed action space learning method for procedure planning in instructional videos. Current procedure planning methods all stick to the state-action pair prediction at every timestep and generate actions adjacently. Although it coincides with human intuition, such a methodology consistently struggles with high-dimensional state supervision and error accumulation on action sequences. In this work, we abstract the procedure planning problem as a mathematical chain model. By skipping uncertain nodes and edges in action chains, we transfer long and complex sequence functions into short but reliable ones in two ways. First, we skip all the intermediate state supervision and only focus on action predictions. Second, we decompose relatively long chains into multiple short sub-chains by skipping unreliable intermediate actions. By this means, our model explores all sorts of reliable sub-relations within an action sequence in the condensed action space. Extensive experiments show Skip-Plan achieves state-of-the-art performance on the CrossTask and COIN benchmarks for procedure planning.

Normalization Enhances Generalization in Visual Reinforcement Learning

Lu Li, Jiafei Lyu, Guozheng Ma et al.

Recent advances in visual reinforcement learning (RL) have led to impressive success in handling complex tasks. However, these methods have demonstrated limited generalization capability to visual disturbances, which poses a significant challenge for their real-world application and adaptability. Though normalization techniques have demonstrated huge success in supervised and unsupervised learning, their applications in visual RL are still scarce. In this paper, we explore the potential benefits of integrating normalization into visual RL methods with respect to generalization performance. We find that, perhaps surprisingly, incorporating suitable normalization techniques is sufficient to enhance the generalization capabilities, without any additional special design. We utilize the combination of two normalization techniques, CrossNorm and SelfNorm, for generalizable visual RL. Extensive experiments are conducted on DMControl Generalization Benchmark and CARLA to validate the effectiveness of our method. We show that our method significantly improves generalization capability while only marginally affecting sample efficiency. In particular, when integrated with DrQ-v2, our method enhances the test performance of DrQ-v2 on CARLA across various scenarios, from 14% of the training performance to 97%.

Exploiting More Information in Sparse Point Cloud for 3D Single Object Tracking

Yubo Cui, Jiayao Shan, Zuoxu Gu et al.

3D single object tracking is a key task in 3D computer vision. However, the sparsity of point clouds makes it difficult to compute the similarity and locate the object, posing big challenges to the 3D tracker. Previous works tried to solve the problem and improved the tracking performance in some common scenarios, but they usually failed in some extreme sparse scenarios, such as for tracking objects at long distances or partially occluded. To address the above problems, in this letter, we propose a sparse-to-dense and transformer-based framework for 3D single object tracking. First, we transform the 3D sparse points into 3D pillars and then compress them into 2D BEV features to have a dense representation. Then, we propose an attention-based encoder to achieve global similarity computation between template and search branches, which could alleviate the influence of sparsity. Meanwhile, the encoder applies the attention on multi-scale features to compensate for the lack of information caused by the sparsity of point cloud and the single scale of features. Finally, we use set-prediction to track the object through a two-stage decoder which also utilizes attention. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves very promising results on the KITTI and NuScenes datasets.

STTracker: Spatio-Temporal Tracker for 3D Single Object Tracking

Yubo Cui, Zhiheng Li, Zheng Fang

3D single object tracking with point clouds is a critical task in 3D computer vision. Previous methods usually input the last two frames and use the predicted box to get the template point cloud in previous frame and the search area point cloud in the current frame respectively, then use similarity-based or motion-based methods to predict the current box. Although these methods achieved good tracking performance, they ignore the historical information of the target, which is important for tracking. In this paper, compared to inputting two frames of point clouds, we input multi-frame of point clouds to encode the spatio-temporal information of the target and learn the motion information of the target implicitly, which could build the correlations among different frames to track the target in the current frame efficiently. Meanwhile, rather than directly using the point feature for feature fusion, we first crop the point cloud features into many patches and then use sparse attention mechanism to encode the patch-level similarity and finally fuse the multi-frame features. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves competitive results on challenging large-scale benchmarks (62.6% in KITTI and 49.66% in NuScenes).

Integrating Controllable Motion Skills from Demonstrations

Honghao Liao, Zhiheng Li, Ziyu Meng et al.

The expanding applications of legged robots require their mastery of versatile motion skills. Correspondingly, researchers must address the challenge of integrating multiple diverse motion skills into controllers. While existing reinforcement learning (RL)-based approaches have achieved notable success in multi-skill integration for legged robots, these methods often require intricate reward engineering or are restricted to integrating a predefined set of motion skills constrained by specific task objectives, resulting in limited flexibility. In this work, we introduce a flexible multi-skill integration framework named Controllable Skills Integration (CSI). CSI enables the integration of a diverse set of motion skills with varying styles into a single policy without the need for complex reward tuning. Furthermore, in a hierarchical control manner, the trained low-level policy can be coupled with a high-level Natural Language Inference (NLI) module to enable preliminary language-directed skill control. Our experiments demonstrate that CSI can flexibly integrate a diverse array of motion skills more comprehensively and facilitate the transitions between different skills. Additionally, CSI exhibits good scalability as the number of motion skills to be integrated increases significantly.

Enhancing Multi-view Stereo with Contrastive Matching and Weighted Focal Loss

Yikang Ding, Zhenyang Li, Dihe Huang et al.

Learning-based multi-view stereo (MVS) methods have made impressive progress and surpassed traditional methods in recent years. However, their accuracy and completeness are still struggling. In this paper, we propose a new method to enhance the performance of existing networks inspired by contrastive learning and feature matching. First, we propose a Contrast Matching Loss (CML), which treats the correct matching points in depth-dimension as positive sample and other points as negative samples, and computes the contrastive loss based on the similarity of features. We further propose a Weighted Focal Loss (WFL) for better classification capability, which weakens the contribution of low-confidence pixels in unimportant areas to the loss according to predicted confidence. Extensive experiments performed on DTU, Tanks and Temples and BlendedMVS datasets show our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and significant improvement over baseline network.

Simple Recurrent Neural Networks is all we need for clinical events predictions using EHR data

Laila Rasmy, Jie Zhu, Zhiheng Li et al.

Recently, there is great interest to investigate the application of deep learning models for the prediction of clinical events using electronic health records (EHR) data. In EHR data, a patient's history is often represented as a sequence of visits, and each visit contains multiple events. As a result, deep learning models developed for sequence modeling, like recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are common architecture for EHR-based clinical events predictive models. While a large variety of RNN models were proposed in the literature, it is unclear if complex architecture innovations will offer superior predictive performance. In order to move this field forward, a rigorous evaluation of various methods is needed. In this study, we conducted a thorough benchmark of RNN architectures in modeling EHR data. We used two prediction tasks: the risk for developing heart failure and the risk of early readmission for inpatient hospitalization. We found that simple gated RNN models, including GRUs and LSTMs, often offer competitive results when properly tuned with Bayesian Optimization, which is in line with similar to findings in the natural language processing (NLP) domain. Discover the Unknown Biased Attribute of an Image Classifier

Zhiheng Li, Chenliang Xu

Recent works find that AI algorithms learn biases from data. Therefore, it is urgent and vital to identify biases in AI algorithms. However, the previous bias identification pipeline overly relies on human experts to conjecture potential biases (e.g., gender), which may neglect other underlying biases not realized by humans. To help human experts better find the AI algorithms' biases, we study a new problem in this work -- for a classifier that predicts a target attribute of the input image, discover its unknown biased attribute. To solve this challenging problem, we use a hyperplane in the generative model's latent space to represent an image attribute; thus, the original problem is transformed to optimizing the hyperplane's normal vector and offset. We propose a novel total-variation loss within this framework as the objective function and a new orthogonalization penalty as a constraint. The latter prevents trivial solutions in which the discovered biased attribute is identical with the target or one of the known-biased attributes. Extensive experiments on both disentanglement datasets and real-world datasets show that our method can discover biased attributes and achieve better disentanglement w.r.t. target attributes. Furthermore, the qualitative results show that our method can discover unnoticeable biased attributes for various object and scene classifiers, proving our method's generalizability for detecting biased attributes in diverse domains of images. UAV-Human: A Large Benchmark for Human Behavior Understanding with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Tianjiao Li, Jun Liu, Wei Zhang et al.

Human behavior understanding with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is of great significance for a wide range of applications, which simultaneously brings an urgent demand of large, challenging, and comprehensive benchmarks for the development and evaluation of UAV-based models. However, existing benchmarks have limitations in terms of the amount of captured data, types of data modalities, categories of provided tasks, and diversities of subjects and environments. Here we propose a new benchmark - UAVHuman - for human behavior understanding with UAVs, which contains 67,428 multi-modal video sequences and 119 subjects for action recognition, 22,476 frames for pose estimation, 41,290 frames and 1,144 identities for person re-identification, and 22,263 frames for attribute recognition. Our dataset was collected by a flying UAV in multiple urban and rural districts in both daytime and nighttime over three months, hence covering extensive diversities w.r.t subjects, backgrounds, illuminations, weathers, occlusions, camera motions, and UAV flying attitudes. Such a comprehensive and challenging benchmark shall be able to promote the research of UAV-based human behavior understanding, including action recognition, pose estimation, re-identification, and attribute recognition. Mask-ControlNet: Higher-Quality Image Generation with An Additional Mask Prompt

Zhiqi Huang, Huixin Xiong, Haoyu Wang et al.

Text-to-image generation has witnessed great progress, especially with the recent advancements in diffusion models. Since texts cannot provide detailed conditions like object appearance, reference images are usually leveraged for the control of objects in the generated images. However, existing methods still suffer limited accuracy when the relationship between the foreground and background is complicated. To address this issue, we develop a framework termed Mask-ControlNet by introducing an additional mask prompt. Specifically, we first employ large vision models to obtain masks to segment the objects of interest in the reference image. Then, the object images are employed as additional prompts to facilitate the diffusion model to better understand the relationship between foreground and background regions during image generation. Experiments show that the mask prompts enhance the controllability of the diffusion model to maintain higher fidelity to the reference image while achieving better image quality. Comparison with previous text-to-image generation methods demonstrates our method's superior quantitative and qualitative performance on the benchmark datasets.

LayerDiffusion: Layered Controlled Image Editing with Diffusion Models

Text-guided image editing has recently experienced rapid development. However, simultaneously performing multiple editing actions on a single image, such as background replacement and specific subject attribute changes, while maintaining consistency between the subject and the background remains challenging. In this paper, we propose LayerDiffusion, a semantic-based layered controlled image editing method. Our method enables non-rigid editing and attribute modification of specific subjects while preserving their unique characteristics and seamlessly integrating them into new backgrounds. We leverage a large-scale text-to-image model and employ a layered controlled optimization strategy combined with layered diffusion training. During the diffusion process, an iterative guidance strategy is used to generate a final image that aligns with the textual description. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in generating highly coherent images that closely align with the given textual description. The edited images maintain a high similarity to the features of the input image and surpass the performance of current leading image editing methods. LayerDiffusion opens up new possibilities for controllable image editing.

MMF-Track: Multi-modal Multi-level Fusion for 3D Single Object Tracking

Zhiheng Li, Yubo Cui, Yu Lin et al.

3D single object tracking plays a crucial role in computer vision. Mainstream methods mainly rely on point clouds to achieve geometry matching between target template and search area. However, textureless and incomplete point clouds make it difficult for single-modal trackers to distinguish objects with similar structures. To overcome the limitations of geometry matching, we propose a Multi-modal Multi-level Fusion Tracker (MMF-Track), which exploits the image texture and geometry characteristic of point clouds to track 3D target. Specifically, we first propose a Space Alignment Module (SAM) to align RGB images with point clouds in 3D space, which is the prerequisite for constructing inter-modal associations. Then, in feature interaction level, we design a Feature Interaction Module (FIM) based on dual-stream structure, which enhances intra-modal features in parallel and constructs inter-modal semantic associations. Meanwhile, in order to refine each modal feature, we introduce a Coarse-to-Fine Interaction Module (CFIM) to realize the hierarchical feature interaction at different scales. Finally, in similarity fusion level, we propose a Similarity Fusion Module (SFM) to aggregate geometry and texture clues from the target. Experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on KITTI (39% Success and 42% Precision gains against previous multi-modal method) and is also competitive on NuScenes.

StyleT2I: Toward Compositional and High-Fidelity Text-to-Image Synthesis

Zhiheng Li, Martin Renqiang Min, Kai Li et al.

Although progress has been made for text-to-image synthesis, previous methods fall short of generalizing to unseen or underrepresented attribute compositions in the input text. Lacking compositionality could have severe implications for robustness and fairness, e.g., inability to synthesize the face images of underrepresented demographic groups. In this paper, we introduce a new framework, StyleT2I, to improve the compositionality of text-to-image synthesis. Specifically, we propose a CLIP-guided Contrastive Loss to better distinguish different compositions among different sentences. To further improve the compositionality, we design a novel Semantic Matching Loss and a Spatial Constraint to identify attributes' latent directions for intended spatial region manipulations, leading to better disentangled latent representations of attributes. Based on the identified latent directions of attributes, we propose Compositional Attribute Adjustment to adjust the latent code, resulting in better compositionality of image synthesis. In addition, we leverage the $\ell_2$-norm regularization of identified latent directions (norm penalty) to strike a nice balance between image-text alignment and image fidelity. In the experiments, we devise a new dataset split and an evaluation metric to evaluate the compositionality of text-to-image synthesis models. The results show that StyleT2I outperforms previous approaches in terms of the consistency between the input text and synthesized images and achieves higher fidelity.

Graph Neural Network Based Coarse-Grained Mapping Prediction

Zhiheng Li, Geemi P. Wellawatte, Maghesree Chakraborty et al.

The selection of coarse-grained (CG) mapping operators is a critical step for CG molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It is still an open question about what is optimal for this choice and there is a need for theory. The current state-of-the art method is mapping operators manually selected by experts. In this work, we demonstrate an automated approach by viewing this problem as supervised learning where we seek to reproduce the mapping operators produced by experts. We present a graph neural network based CG mapping predictor called DEEP SUPERVISED GRAPH PARTITIONING MODEL(DSGPM) that treats mapping operators as a graph segmentation problem. DSGPM is trained on a novel dataset, Human-annotated Mappings (HAM), consisting of 1,206 molecules with expert annotated mapping operators. HAM can be used to facilitate further research in this area. Our model uses a novel metric learning objective to produce high-quality atomic features that are used in spectral clustering. The results show that the DSGPM outperforms state-of-the-art methods in the field of graph segmentation. Finally, we find that predicted CG mapping operators indeed result in good CG MD models when used in simulation.

Learning a Weakly-Supervised Video Actor-Action Segmentation Model with a Wise Selection

Jie Chen, Zhiheng Li, Jiebo Luo et al.

We address weakly-supervised video actor-action segmentation (VAAS), which extends general video object segmentation (VOS) to additionally consider action labels of the actors. The most successful methods on VOS synthesize a pool of pseudo-annotations (PAs) and then refine them iteratively. However, they face challenges as to how to select from a massive amount of PAs high-quality ones, how to set an appropriate stop condition for weakly-supervised training, and how to initialize PAs pertaining to VAAS. To overcome these challenges, we propose a general Weakly-Supervised framework with a Wise Selection of training samples and model evaluation criterion (WS^2). Instead of blindly trusting quality-inconsistent PAs, WS^2 employs a learning-based selection to select effective PAs and a novel region integrity criterion as a stopping condition for weakly-supervised training. In addition, a 3D-Conv GCAM is devised to adapt to the VAAS task. Extensive experiments show that WS^2 achieves state-of-the-art performance on both weakly-supervised VOS and VAAS tasks and is on par with the best fully-supervised method on VAAS.

Deep Grouping Model for Unified Perceptual Parsing

Zhiheng Li, Wenxuan Bao, Jiayang Zheng et al.

The perceptual-based grouping process produces a hierarchical and compositional image representation that helps both human and machine vision systems recognize heterogeneous visual concepts. Examples can be found in the classical hierarchical superpixel segmentation or image parsing works. However, the grouping process is largely overlooked in modern CNN-based image segmentation networks due to many challenges, including the inherent incompatibility between the grid-shaped CNN feature map and the irregular-shaped perceptual grouping hierarchy. Overcoming these challenges, we propose a deep grouping model (DGM) that tightly marries the two types of representations and defines a bottom-up and a top-down process for feature exchanging. When evaluating the model on the recent Broden+ dataset for the unified perceptual parsing task, it achieves state-of-the-art results while having a small computational overhead compared to other contextual-based segmentation models. Furthermore, the DGM has better interpretability compared with modern CNN methods.

Cross-modality generation is an emerging topic that aims to synthesize data in one modality based on information in a different modality. In this paper, we consider a task of such: given an arbitrary audio speech and one lip image of arbitrary target identity, generate synthesized lip movements of the target identity saying the speech. To perform well in this task, it inevitably requires a model to not only consider the retention of target identity, photo-realistic of synthesized images, consistency and smoothness of lip images in a sequence, but more importantly, learn the correlations between audio speech and lip movements. To solve the collective problems, we explore the best modeling of the audio-visual correlations in building and training a lip-movement generator network. Specifically, we devise a method to fuse audio and image embeddings to generate multiple lip images at once and propose a novel correlation loss to synchronize lip changes and speech changes. Our final model utilizes a combination of four losses for a comprehensive consideration in generating lip movements; it is trained in an end-to-end fashion and is robust to lip shapes, view angles and different facial characteristics. Thoughtful experiments on three datasets ranging from lab-recorded to lips in-the-wild show that our model significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art methods extended to this task.
