Classifier-guided Gradient Modulation for Enhanced Multimodal LearningZirun Guo, Tao Jin, Jingyuan Chen et al.
Multimodal learning has developed very fast in recent years. However, during the multimodal training process, the model tends to rely on only one modality based on which it could learn faster, thus leading to inadequate use of other modalities. Existing methods to balance the training process always have some limitations on the loss functions, optimizers and the number of modalities and only consider modulating the magnitude of the gradients while ignoring the directions of the gradients. To solve these problems, in this paper, we present a novel method to balance multimodal learning with Classifier-Guided Gradient Modulation (CGGM), considering both the magnitude and directions of the gradients. We conduct extensive experiments on four multimodal datasets: UPMC-Food 101, CMU-MOSI, IEMOCAP and BraTS 2021, covering classification, regression and segmentation tasks. The results show that CGGM outperforms all the baselines and other state-of-the-art methods consistently, demonstrating its effectiveness and versatility. Boosting MLLM Reasoning with Text-Debiased Hint-GRPOQihan Huang, Weilong Dai, Jinlong Liu et al.
MLLM reasoning has drawn widespread research for its excellent problem-solving capability. Current reasoning methods fall into two types: PRM, which supervises the intermediate reasoning steps, and ORM, which supervises the final results. Recently, DeepSeek-R1 has challenged the traditional view that PRM outperforms ORM, which demonstrates strong generalization performance using an ORM method (i.e., GRPO). However, current MLLM's GRPO algorithms still struggle to handle challenging and complex multimodal reasoning tasks (e.g., mathematical reasoning). In this work, we reveal two problems that impede the performance of GRPO on the MLLM: Low data utilization and Text-bias. Low data utilization refers to that GRPO cannot acquire positive rewards to update the MLLM on difficult samples, and text-bias is a phenomenon that the MLLM bypasses image condition and solely relies on text condition for generation after GRPO training. To tackle these problems, this work proposes Hint-GRPO that improves data utilization by adaptively providing hints for samples of varying difficulty, and text-bias calibration that mitigates text-bias by calibrating the token prediction logits with image condition in test-time. Experiment results on three base MLLMs across eleven datasets demonstrate that our proposed methods advance the reasoning capability of original MLLM by a large margin, exhibiting superior performance to existing MLLM reasoning methods. Dual-Modality Vehicle Anomaly Detection via Bilateral Trajectory TracingJingyuan Chen, Guanchen Ding, Yuchen Yang et al.
Traffic anomaly detection has played a crucial role in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The main challenges of this task lie in the highly diversified anomaly scenes and variational lighting conditions. Although much work has managed to identify the anomaly in homogenous weather and scene, few resolved to cope with complex ones. In this paper, we proposed a dual-modality modularized methodology for the robust detection of abnormal vehicles. We introduced an integrated anomaly detection framework comprising the following modules: background modeling, vehicle tracking with detection, mask construction, Region of Interest (ROI) backtracking, and dual-modality tracing. Concretely, we employed background modeling to filter the motion information and left the static information for later vehicle detection. For the vehicle detection and tracking module, we adopted YOLOv5 and multi-scale tracking to localize the anomalies. Besides, we utilized the frame difference and tracking results to identify the road and obtain the mask. In addition, we introduced multiple similarity estimation metrics to refine the anomaly period via backtracking. Finally, we proposed a dual-modality bilateral tracing module to refine the time further. The experiments conducted on the Track 4 testset of the NVIDIA 2021 AI City Challenge yielded a result of 0.9302 F1-Score and 3.4039 root mean square error (RMSE), indicating the effectiveness of our framework.

Real-Time Referring Expression Comprehension by Single-Stage Grounding NetworkXinpeng Chen, Lin Ma, Jingyuan Chen et al.
In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end model, namely Single-Stage Grounding network (SSG), to localize the referent given a referring expression within an image. Different from previous multi-stage models which rely on object proposals or detected regions, our proposed model aims to comprehend a referring expression through one single stage without resorting to region proposals as well as the subsequent region-wise feature extraction. Specifically, a multimodal interactor is proposed to summarize the local region features regarding the referring expression attentively. Subsequently, a grounder is proposed to localize the referring expression within the given image directly. For further improving the localization accuracy, a guided attention mechanism is proposed to enforce the grounder to focus on the central region of the referent. Moreover, by exploiting and predicting visual attribute information, the grounder can further distinguish the referent objects within an image and thereby improve the model performance. Experiments on RefCOCO, RefCOCO+, and RefCOCOg datasets demonstrate that our proposed SSG without relying on any region proposals can achieve comparable performance with other advanced models. Furthermore, our SSG outperforms the previous models and achieves the state-of-art performance on the ReferItGame dataset. More importantly, our SSG is time efficient and can ground a referring expression in a 416*416 image from the RefCOCO dataset in 25ms (40 referents per second) on average with a Nvidia Tesla P40, accomplishing more than 9* speedups over the existing multi-stage models.
