A Real-time Faint Space Debris Detector With Learning-based LCM

Zherui Lu, Gangyi Wang, Xinguo Wei et al.

With the development of aerospace technology, the increasing population of space debris has posed a great threat to the safety of spacecraft. However, the low intensity of reflected light and high angular velocity of space debris impede the extraction. Besides, due to the limitations of the ground observation methods, small space debris can hardly be detected, making it necessary to enhance the spacecraft's capacity for space situational awareness (SSA). Considering that traditional methods have some defects in low-SNR target detection, such as low effectiveness and large time consumption, this paper proposes a method for low-SNR streak extraction based on local contrast and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), which can detect space objects with SNR 2.0 efficiently. In the proposed algorithm, local contrast will be applied for crude classifications, which will return connected components as preliminary results, and then MLE will be performed to reconstruct the connected components of targets via orientated growth, further improving the precision. The algorithm has been verified with both simulated streaks and real star tracker images, and the average centroid error of the proposed algorithm is close to the state-of-the-art method like ODCC. At the same time, the algorithm in this paper has significant advantages in efficiency compared with ODCC. In conclusion, the algorithm in this paper is of high speed and precision, which guarantees its promising applications in the extraction of high dynamic targets.

LSTC: Boosting Atomic Action Detection with Long-Short-Term Context

Yuxi Li, Boshen Zhang, Jian Li et al.

In this paper, we place the atomic action detection problem into a Long-Short Term Context (LSTC) to analyze how the temporal reliance among video signals affect the action detection results. To do this, we decompose the action recognition pipeline into short-term and long-term reliance, in terms of the hypothesis that the two kinds of context are conditionally independent given the objective action instance. Within our design, a local aggregation branch is utilized to gather dense and informative short-term cues, while a high order long-term inference branch is designed to reason the objective action class from high-order interaction between actor and other person or person pairs. Both branches independently predict the context-specific actions and the results are merged in the end. We demonstrate that both temporal grains are beneficial to atomic action recognition. On the mainstream benchmarks of atomic action detection, our design can bring significant performance gain from the existing state-of-the-art pipeline. Anti-Confusing: Region-Aware Network for Human Pose Estimation

Xuan Cao, Yanhao Ge, Ying Tai et al.

In this work, we propose a novel framework named Region-Aware Network (RANet), which learns the ability of anti-confusing in case of heavy occlusion, nearby person and symmetric appearance, for human pose estimation. Specifically, the proposed method addresses three key aspects, i.e., data augmentation, feature learning and prediction fusion, respectively. First, we propose Parsing-based Data Augmentation (PDA) to generate abundant data that synthesizes confusing textures. Second, we not only propose a Feature Pyramid Stem (FPS) to learn stronger low-level features in lower stage; but also incorporate an Effective Region Extraction (ERE) module to excavate better target-specific features. Third, we introduce Cascade Voting Fusion (CVF) to explicitly exclude the inferior predictions and fuse the rest effective predictions for the final pose estimation. Extensive experimental results on two popular benchmarks, i.e. MPII and LSP, demonstrate the effectiveness of our method against the state-of-the-art competitors. Especially on easily-confusable joints, our method makes significant improvement.
