Value Sensitive Design for Fair Online Recruitment: A Conceptual Framework Informed by Job Seekers' Fairness Concerns

Changyang He, Yue Deng, Alessandro Fabris et al.

The susceptibility to biases and discrimination is a pressing issue in today's labor markets. While digital recruitment systems play an increasingly significant role in human resource management, a systematic understanding of human-centered design principles for fair online hiring remains lacking, particularly considering the gap between idealized conceptualizations of fairness in research and actual fairness concerns expressed by job seekers. To address this gap, this work explores the potential of developing a fair recruitment framework based on job seekers' fairness concerns shared in r/jobs, one of the largest online job communities. Through a grounded theory approach, we uncover four overarching themes of job seekers' fairness concerns: personal attribute discrimination beyond legally protected attributes, interaction biases, improper interpretations of qualifications, and power imbalance. Drawing on value sensitive design, we derive design implications for fair algorithms and interfaces in recruitment systems, integrating them into a conceptual framework that spans different hiring stages.

Backdoor Attacks on Dense Retrieval via Public and Unintentional Triggers

Quanyu Long, Yue Deng, LeiLei Gan et al.

Dense retrieval systems have been widely used in various NLP applications. However, their vulnerabilities to potential attacks have been underexplored. This paper investigates a novel attack scenario where the attackers aim to mislead the retrieval system into retrieving the attacker-specified contents. Those contents, injected into the retrieval corpus by attackers, can include harmful text like hate speech or spam. Unlike prior methods that rely on model weights and generate conspicuous, unnatural outputs, we propose a covert backdoor attack triggered by grammar errors. Our approach ensures that the attacked models can function normally for standard queries while covertly triggering the retrieval of the attacker's contents in response to minor linguistic mistakes. Specifically, dense retrievers are trained with contrastive loss and hard negative sampling. Surprisingly, our findings demonstrate that contrastive loss is notably sensitive to grammatical errors, and hard negative sampling can exacerbate susceptibility to backdoor attacks. Our proposed method achieves a high attack success rate with a minimal corpus poisoning rate of only 0.048\%, while preserving normal retrieval performance. This indicates that the method has negligible impact on user experience for error-free queries. Furthermore, evaluations across three real-world defense strategies reveal that the malicious passages embedded within the corpus remain highly resistant to detection and filtering, underscoring the robustness and subtlety of the proposed attack \footnote{Codes of this work are available at https://github.com/ruyue0001/Backdoor_DPR.}.

DPoser: Diffusion Model as Robust 3D Human Pose Prior

Junzhe Lu, Jing Lin, Hongkun Dou et al.

This work targets to construct a robust human pose prior. However, it remains a persistent challenge due to biomechanical constraints and diverse human movements. Traditional priors like VAEs and NDFs often exhibit shortcomings in realism and generalization, notably with unseen noisy poses. To address these issues, we introduce DPoser, a robust and versatile human pose prior built upon diffusion models. DPoser regards various pose-centric tasks as inverse problems and employs variational diffusion sampling for efficient solving. Accordingly, designed with optimization frameworks, DPoser seamlessly benefits human mesh recovery, pose generation, pose completion, and motion denoising tasks. Furthermore, due to the disparity between the articulated poses and structured images, we propose truncated timestep scheduling to enhance the effectiveness of DPoser. Our approach demonstrates considerable enhancements over common uniform scheduling used in image domains, boasting improvements of 5.4%, 17.2%, and 3.8% across human mesh recovery, pose completion, and motion denoising, respectively. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of DPoser over existing state-of-the-art pose priors across multiple tasks.

DPoser-X: Diffusion Model as Robust 3D Whole-body Human Pose Prior

Junzhe Lu, Jing Lin, Hongkun Dou et al.

We present DPoser-X, a diffusion-based prior model for 3D whole-body human poses. Building a versatile and robust full-body human pose prior remains challenging due to the inherent complexity of articulated human poses and the scarcity of high-quality whole-body pose datasets. To address these limitations, we introduce a Diffusion model as body Pose prior (DPoser) and extend it to DPoser-X for expressive whole-body human pose modeling. Our approach unifies various pose-centric tasks as inverse problems, solving them through variational diffusion sampling. To enhance performance on downstream applications, we introduce a novel truncated timestep scheduling method specifically designed for pose data characteristics. We also propose a masked training mechanism that effectively combines whole-body and part-specific datasets, enabling our model to capture interdependencies between body parts while avoiding overfitting to specific actions. Extensive experiments demonstrate DPoser-X's robustness and versatility across multiple benchmarks for body, hand, face, and full-body pose modeling. Our model consistently outperforms state-of-the-art alternatives, establishing a new benchmark for whole-body human pose prior modeling.

2K-Characters-10K-Stories: A Quality-Gated Stylized Narrative Dataset with Disentangled Control and Sequence Consistency

Xingxi Yin, Yicheng Li, Gong Yan et al.

Sequential identity consistency under precise transient attribute control remains a long-standing challenge in controllable visual storytelling. Existing datasets lack sufficient fidelity and fail to disentangle stable identities from transient attributes, limiting structured control over pose, expression, and scene composition and thus constraining reliable sequential synthesis. To address this gap, we introduce \textbf{2K-Characters-10K-Stories}, a multi-modal stylized narrative dataset of \textbf{2{,}000} uniquely stylized characters appearing across \textbf{10{,}000} illustration stories. It is the first dataset that pairs large-scale unique identities with explicit, decoupled control signals for sequential identity consistency. We introduce a \textbf{Human-in-the-Loop pipeline (HiL)} that leverages expert-verified character templates and LLM-guided narrative planning to generate highly-aligned structured data. A \textbf{decoupled control} scheme separates persistent identity from transient attributes -- pose and expression -- while a \textbf{Quality-Gated loop} integrating MMLM evaluation, Auto-Prompt Tuning, and Local Image Editing enforces pixel-level consistency. Extensive experiments demonstrate that models fine-tuned on our dataset achieves performance comparable to closed-source models in generating visual narratives.
