V2X-Sim: Multi-Agent Collaborative Perception Dataset and Benchmark for Autonomous DrivingYiming Li, Dekun Ma, Ziyan An et al.
Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication techniques enable the collaboration between vehicles and many other entities in the neighboring environment, which could fundamentally improve the perception system for autonomous driving. However, the lack of a public dataset significantly restricts the research progress of collaborative perception. To fill this gap, we present V2X-Sim, a comprehensive simulated multi-agent perception dataset for V2X-aided autonomous driving. V2X-Sim provides: (1) \hl{multi-agent} sensor recordings from the road-side unit (RSU) and multiple vehicles that enable collaborative perception, (2) multi-modality sensor streams that facilitate multi-modality perception, and (3) diverse ground truths that support various perception tasks. Meanwhile, we build an open-source testbed and provide a benchmark for the state-of-the-art collaborative perception algorithms on three tasks, including detection, tracking and segmentation. V2X-Sim seeks to stimulate collaborative perception research for autonomous driving before realistic datasets become widely available. RankSEG-RMA: An Efficient Segmentation Algorithm via Reciprocal Moment ApproximationZixun Wang, Ben Dai
Semantic segmentation labels each pixel in an image with its corresponding class, and is typically evaluated using the Intersection over Union (IoU) and Dice metrics to quantify the overlap between predicted and ground-truth segmentation masks. In the literature, most existing methods estimate pixel-wise class probabilities, then apply argmax or thresholding to obtain the final prediction. These methods have been shown to generally lead to inconsistent or suboptimal results, as they do not directly maximize segmentation metrics. To address this issue, a novel consistent segmentation framework, RankSEG, has been proposed, which includes RankDice and RankIoU specifically designed to optimize the Dice and IoU metrics, respectively. Although RankSEG almost guarantees improved performance, it suffers from two major drawbacks. First, it is its computational expense-RankDice has a complexity of O(d log d) with a substantial constant factor (where d represents the number of pixels), while RankIoU exhibits even higher complexity O(d^2), thus limiting its practical application. For instance, in LiTS, prediction with RankSEG takes 16.33 seconds compared to just 0.01 seconds with the argmax rule. Second, RankSEG is only applicable to overlapping segmentation settings, where multiple classes can occupy the same pixel, which contrasts with standard benchmarks that typically assume non-overlapping segmentation. In this paper, we overcome these two drawbacks via a reciprocal moment approximation (RMA) of RankSEG with the following contributions: (i) we improve RankSEG using RMA, namely RankSEG-RMA, reduces the complexity of both algorithms to O(d) while maintaining comparable performance; (ii) inspired by RMA, we develop a pixel-wise score function that allows efficient implementation for non-overlapping segmentation settings.

Less is More: Surgical Phase Recognition from Timestamp SupervisionXinpeng Ding, Xinjian Yan, Zixun Wang et al.
Surgical phase recognition is a fundamental task in computer-assisted surgery systems. Most existing works are under the supervision of expensive and time-consuming full annotations, which require the surgeons to repeat watching videos to find the precise start and end time for a surgical phase. In this paper, we introduce timestamp supervision for surgical phase recognition to train the models with timestamp annotations, where the surgeons are asked to identify only a single timestamp within the temporal boundary of a phase. This annotation can significantly reduce the manual annotation cost compared to the full annotations. To make full use of such timestamp supervisions, we propose a novel method called uncertainty-aware temporal diffusion (UATD) to generate trustworthy pseudo labels for training. Our proposed UATD is motivated by the property of surgical videos, i.e., the phases are long events consisting of consecutive frames. To be specific, UATD diffuses the single labelled timestamp to its corresponding high confident ( i.e., low uncertainty) neighbour frames in an iterative way. Our study uncovers unique insights of surgical phase recognition with timestamp supervisions: 1) timestamp annotation can reduce 74% annotation time compared with the full annotation, and surgeons tend to annotate those timestamps near the middle of phases; 2) extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can achieve competitive results compared with full supervision methods, while reducing manual annotation cost; 3) less is more in surgical phase recognition, i.e., less but discriminative pseudo labels outperform full but containing ambiguous frames; 4) the proposed UATD can be used as a plug and play method to clean ambiguous labels near boundaries between phases, and improve the performance of the current surgical phase recognition methods.
