Fault diagnosis for open-circuit faults in NPC inverter based on knowledge-driven and data-driven approaches

Lei Kou, Chuang Liu, Guo-wei Cai et al.

In this study, the open-circuit faults diagnosis and location issue of the neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters are analysed. A novel fault diagnosis approach based on knowledge driven and data driven was presented for the open-circuit faults in insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) of NPC inverter, and Concordia transform (knowledge driven) and random forests (RFs) technique (data driven) are employed to improve the robustness performance of the fault diagnosis classifier. First, the fault feature data of AC in either normal state or open-circuit faults states of NPC inverter are analysed and extracted. Second, the Concordia transform is used to process the fault samples, and it has been verified that the slopes of current trajectories are not affected by different loads in this study, which can help the proposed method to reduce overdependence on fault data. Moreover, then the transformed fault samples are adopted to train the RFs fault diagnosis classifier, and the fault diagnosis results show that the classification accuracy and robustness performance of the fault diagnosis classifier are improved. Finally, the diagnosis results of online fault diagnosis experiments show that the proposed classifier can locate the open-circuit fault of IGBTs in NPC inverter under the conditions of different loads.

Fault diagnosis for three-phase PWM rectifier based on deep feedforward network with transient synthetic features

Kou Lei, Liu Chuang, Cai Guo-Wei et al.

Three-phase PWM rectifiers are adopted extensively in industry because of their excellent properties and potential advantages. However, while the IGBT has an open-circuit fault, the system does not crash suddenly, the performance will be reduced for instance voltages fluctuation and current harmonics. A fault diagnosis method based on deep feedforward network with transient synthetic features is proposed to reduce the dependence on the fault mathematical models in this paper, which mainly uses the transient phase current to train the deep feedforward network classifier. Firstly, the features of fault phase current are analyzed in this paper. Secondly, the historical fault data after feature synthesis is employed to train the deep feedforward network classifier, and the average fault diagnosis accuracy can reach 97.85% for transient synthetic fault data, the classifier trained by the transient synthetic features obtained more than 1% gain in performance compared with original transient features. Finally, the online fault diagnosis experiments show that the method can accurately locate the fault IGBTs, and the final diagnosis result is determined by multiple groups results, which has the ability to increase the accuracy and reliability of the diagnosis results. Data-driven design of fault diagnosis for three-phase PWM rectifier using random forests technique with transient synthetic features

Lei Kou, Chuang Liu, Guo-wei Cai et al.

A three-phase pulse-width modulation (PWM) rectifier can usually maintain operation when open-circuit faults occur in insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), which will lead the system to be unstable and unsafe. Aiming at this problem, based on random forests with transient synthetic features, a data-driven online fault diagnosis method is proposed to locate the open-circuit faults of IGBTs timely and effectively in this study. Firstly, by analysing the open-circuit fault features of IGBTs in the three-phase PWM rectifier, it is found that the occurrence of the fault features is related to the fault location and time, and the fault features do not always appear immediately with the occurrence of the fault. Secondly, different data-driven fault diagnosis methods are compared and evaluated, the performance of random forests algorithm is better than that of support vector machine or artificial neural networks. Meanwhile, the accuracy of fault diagnosis classifier trained by transient synthetic features is higher than that trained by original features. Also, the random forests fault diagnosis classifier trained by multiplicative features is the best with fault diagnosis accuracy can reach 98.32%. Finally, the online fault diagnosis experiments are carried out and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which can accurately locate the open-circuit faults in IGBTs while ensuring system safety.

Rethinking Semantic Collaborative Integration: Why Alignment Is Not Enough

Maolin Wang, Dongze Wu, Jianing Zhou et al.

Large language models (LLMs) have become an important semantic infrastructure for modern recommender systems. A prevailing paradigm integrates LLM-derived semantic embeddings with collaborative representations via representation alignment, implicitly assuming that the two views encode a shared latent entity and that stronger alignment yields better results. We formalize this assumption as the global low-complexity alignment hypothesis and argue that it is stronger than necessary and often structurally mismatched with real-world recommendation settings. We propose a complementary perspective in which semantic and collaborative representations are treated as partially shared yet fundamentally heterogeneous views, each containing both shared and view-specific factors. Under this shared-plus-private latent structure, enforcing global geometric alignment may distort local structure, suppress view-specific signals, and reduce informational diversity. To support this perspective, we develop complementarity-aware diagnostics that quantify overlap, unique-hit contribution, and theoretical fusion upper bounds. Empirical analyses on sparse recommendation benchmarks reveal low item-level agreement between semantic and collaborative views and substantial oracle fusion gains, indicating strong complementarity. Furthermore, controlled alignment probes show that low-capacity mappings capture only shared components and fail to recover full collaborative geometry, especially under distribution shift. These findings suggest that alignment should not be treated as the default integration principle. We advocate a shift from alignment-centric modeling to complementarity fusion-centric, complementarity-aware design, where shared factors are selectively integrated while private signals are preserved. This reframing provides a principled foundation for the next generation of LLM-enhanced recommender systems.

IEKG: A Commonsense Knowledge Graph for Idiomatic Expressions

Ziheng Zeng, Kellen Tan Cheng, Srihari Venkat Nanniyur et al.

Idiomatic expression (IE) processing and comprehension have challenged pre-trained language models (PTLMs) because their meanings are non-compositional. Unlike prior works that enable IE comprehension through fine-tuning PTLMs with sentences containing IEs, in this work, we construct IEKG, a commonsense knowledge graph for figurative interpretations of IEs. This extends the established ATOMIC2020 graph, converting PTLMs into knowledge models (KMs) that encode and infer commonsense knowledge related to IE use. Experiments show that various PTLMs can be converted into KMs with IEKG. We verify the quality of IEKG and the ability of the trained KMs with automatic and human evaluation. Through applications in natural language understanding, we show that a PTLM injected with knowledge from IEKG exhibits improved IE comprehension ability and can generalize to IEs unseen during training.

Idiomatic Expression Paraphrasing without Strong Supervision

Jianing Zhou, Ziheng Zeng, Hongyu Gong et al.

Idiomatic expressions (IEs) play an essential role in natural language. In this paper, we study the task of idiomatic sentence paraphrasing (ISP), which aims to paraphrase a sentence with an IE by replacing the IE with its literal paraphrase. The lack of large-scale corpora with idiomatic-literal parallel sentences is a primary challenge for this task, for which we consider two separate solutions. First, we propose an unsupervised approach to ISP, which leverages an IE's contextual information and definition and does not require a parallel sentence training set. Second, we propose a weakly supervised approach using back-translation to jointly perform paraphrasing and generation of sentences with IEs to enlarge the small-scale parallel sentence training dataset. Other significant derivatives of the study include a model that replaces a literal phrase in a sentence with an IE to generate an idiomatic expression and a large scale parallel dataset with idiomatic/literal sentence pairs. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions compared to competitive baselines is seen in the relative gains of over 5.16 points in BLEU, over 8.75 points in METEOR, and over 19.57 points in SARI when the generated sentences are empirically validated on a parallel dataset using automatic and manual evaluations. We demonstrate the practical utility of ISP as a preprocessing step in En-De machine translation.

From Solving a Problem Boldly to Cutting the Gordian Knot: Idiomatic Text Generation

Jianing Zhou, Hongyu Gong, Srihari Nanniyur et al.

We study a new application for text generation -- idiomatic sentence generation -- which aims to transfer literal phrases in sentences into their idiomatic counterparts. Inspired by psycholinguistic theories of idiom use in one's native language, we propose a novel approach for this task, which retrieves the appropriate idiom for a given literal sentence, extracts the span of the sentence to be replaced by the idiom, and generates the idiomatic sentence by using a neural model to combine the retrieved idiom and the remainder of the sentence. Experiments on a novel dataset created for this task show that our model is able to effectively transfer literal sentences into idiomatic ones. Furthermore, automatic and human evaluations show that for this task, the proposed model outperforms a series of competitive baseline models for text generation.

Multiple Character Embeddings for Chinese Word Segmentation

Jingkang Wang, Jianing Zhou, Jie Zhou et al.

Chinese word segmentation (CWS) is often regarded as a character-based sequence labeling task in most current works which have achieved great success with the help of powerful neural networks. However, these works neglect an important clue: Chinese characters incorporate both semantic and phonetic meanings. In this paper, we introduce multiple character embeddings including Pinyin Romanization and Wubi Input, both of which are easily accessible and effective in depicting semantics of characters. We propose a novel shared Bi-LSTM-CRF model to fuse linguistic features efficiently by sharing the LSTM network during the training procedure. Extensive experiments on five corpora show that extra embeddings help obtain a significant improvement in labeling accuracy. Specifically, we achieve the state-of-the-art performance in AS and CityU corpora with F1 scores of 96.9 and 97.3, respectively without leveraging any external lexical resources.
