Review of end-to-end speech synthesis technology based on deep learning

Zhaoxi Mu, Xinyu Yang, Yizhuo Dong

As an indispensable part of modern human-computer interaction system, speech synthesis technology helps users get the output of intelligent machine more easily and intuitively, thus has attracted more and more attention. Due to the limitations of high complexity and low efficiency of traditional speech synthesis technology, the current research focus is the deep learning-based end-to-end speech synthesis technology, which has more powerful modeling ability and a simpler pipeline. It mainly consists of three modules: text front-end, acoustic model, and vocoder. This paper reviews the research status of these three parts, and classifies and compares various methods according to their emphasis. Moreover, this paper also summarizes the open-source speech corpus of English, Chinese and other languages that can be used for speech synthesis tasks, and introduces some commonly used subjective and objective speech quality evaluation method. Finally, some attractive future research directions are pointed out.

Manipulation Mask Generator: High-Quality Image Manipulation Mask Generation Method Based on Modified Total Variation Noise Reduction

Xinyu Yang, Jizhe Zhou

In artificial intelligence, any model that wants to achieve a good result is inseparable from a large number of high-quality data. It is especially true in the field of tamper detection. This paper proposes a modified total variation noise reduction method to acquire high-quality tampered images. We automatically crawl original and tampered images from the Baidu PS Bar. Baidu PS Bar is a website where net friends post countless tampered images. Subtracting the original image with the tampered image can highlight the tampered area. However, there is also substantial noise on the final print, so these images can't be directly used in the deep learning model. Our modified total variation noise reduction method is aimed at solving this problem. Because a lot of text is slender, it is easy to lose text information after the opening and closing operation. We use MSER (Maximally Stable Extremal Regions) and NMS (Non-maximum Suppression) technology to extract text information. And then use the modified total variation noise reduction technology to process the subtracted image. Finally, we can obtain an image with little noise by adding the image and text information. And the idea also largely retains the text information. Datasets generated in this way can be used in deep learning models, and they will help the model achieve better results.

PanAf20K: A Large Video Dataset for Wild Ape Detection and Behaviour Recognition

Otto Brookes, Majid Mirmehdi, Colleen Stephens et al.

We present the PanAf20K dataset, the largest and most diverse open-access annotated video dataset of great apes in their natural environment. It comprises more than 7 million frames across ~20,000 camera trap videos of chimpanzees and gorillas collected at 14 field sites in tropical Africa as part of the Pan African Programme: The Cultured Chimpanzee. The footage is accompanied by a rich set of annotations and benchmarks making it suitable for training and testing a variety of challenging and ecologically important computer vision tasks including ape detection and behaviour recognition. Furthering AI analysis of camera trap information is critical given the International Union for Conservation of Nature now lists all species in the great ape family as either Endangered or Critically Endangered. We hope the dataset can form a solid basis for engagement of the AI community to improve performance, efficiency, and result interpretation in order to support assessments of great ape presence, abundance, distribution, and behaviour and thereby aid conservation efforts.

High-Fidelity Face Swapping with Style Blending

Xinyu Yang, Hongbo Bo

Face swapping has gained significant traction, driven by the plethora of human face synthesis facilitated by deep learning methods. However, previous face swapping methods that used generative adversarial networks (GANs) as backbones have faced challenges such as inconsistency in blending, distortions, artifacts, and issues with training stability. To address these limitations, we propose an innovative end-to-end framework for high-fidelity face swapping. First, we introduce a StyleGAN-based facial attributes encoder that extracts essential features from faces and inverts them into a latent style code, encapsulating indispensable facial attributes for successful face swapping. Second, we introduce an attention-based style blending module to effectively transfer Face IDs from source to target. To ensure accurate and quality transferring, a series of constraint measures including contrastive face ID learning, facial landmark alignment, and dual swap consistency is implemented. Finally, the blended style code is translated back to the image space via the style decoder, which is of high training stability and generative capability. Extensive experiments on the CelebA-HQ dataset highlight the superior visual quality of generated images from our face-swapping methodology when compared to other state-of-the-art methods, and the effectiveness of each proposed module. Source code and weights will be publicly available.

A Comprehensive Survey on Deep Music Generation: Multi-level Representations, Algorithms, Evaluations, and Future Directions

Shulei Ji, Jing Luo, Xinyu Yang

The utilization of deep learning techniques in generating various contents (such as image, text, etc.) has become a trend. Especially music, the topic of this paper, has attracted widespread attention of countless researchers. The whole process of producing music can be divided into three stages, corresponding to the three levels of music generation: score generation produces scores, performance generation adds performance characteristics to the scores, and audio generation converts scores with performance characteristics into audio by assigning timbre or generates music in audio format directly. Previous surveys have explored the network models employed in the field of automatic music generation. However, the development history, the model evolution, as well as the pros and cons of same music generation task have not been clearly illustrated. This paper attempts to provide an overview of various composition tasks under different music generation levels, covering most of the currently popular music generation tasks using deep learning. In addition, we summarize the datasets suitable for diverse tasks, discuss the music representations, the evaluation methods as well as the challenges under different levels, and finally point out several future directions.

Back to the Future: Cycle Encoding Prediction for Self-supervised Contrastive Video Representation Learning

Xinyu Yang, Majid Mirmehdi, Tilo Burghardt

In this paper we show that learning video feature spaces in which temporal cycles are maximally predictable benefits action classification. In particular, we propose a novel learning approach termed Cycle Encoding Prediction (CEP) that is able to effectively represent high-level spatio-temporal structure of unlabelled video content. CEP builds a latent space wherein the concept of closed forward-backward as well as backward-forward temporal loops is approximately preserved. As a self-supervision signal, CEP leverages the bi-directional temporal coherence of the video stream and applies loss functions that encourage both temporal cycle closure as well as contrastive feature separation. Architecturally, the underpinning network structure utilises a single feature encoder for all video snippets, adding two predictive modules that learn temporal forward and backward transitions. We apply our framework for pretext training of networks for action recognition tasks. We report significantly improved results for the standard datasets UCF101 and HMDB51. Detailed ablation studies support the effectiveness of the proposed components. We publish source code for the CEP components in full with this paper.

Great Ape Detection in Challenging Jungle Camera Trap Footage via Attention-Based Spatial and Temporal Feature Blending

Xinyu Yang, Majid Mirmehdi, Tilo Burghardt

We propose the first multi-frame video object detection framework trained to detect great apes. It is applicable to challenging camera trap footage in complex jungle environments and extends a traditional feature pyramid architecture by adding self-attention driven feature blending in both the spatial as well as the temporal domain. We demonstrate that this extension can detect distinctive species appearance and motion signatures despite significant partial occlusion. We evaluate the framework using 500 camera trap videos of great apes from the Pan African Programme containing 180K frames, which we manually annotated with accurate per-frame animal bounding boxes. These clips contain significant partial occlusions, challenging lighting, dynamic backgrounds, and natural camouflage effects. We show that our approach performs highly robustly and significantly outperforms frame-based detectors. We also perform detailed ablation studies and validation on the full ILSVRC 2015 VID data corpus to demonstrate wider applicability at adequate performance levels. We conclude that the framework is ready to assist human camera trap inspection efforts. We publish code, weights, and ground truth annotations with this paper.
