Beyond a Video Frame Interpolator: A Space Decoupled Learning Approach to Continuous Image Transition

Tao Yang, Peiran Ren, Xuansong Xie et al.

Video frame interpolation (VFI) aims to improve the temporal resolution of a video sequence. Most of the existing deep learning based VFI methods adopt off-the-shelf optical flow algorithms to estimate the bidirectional flows and interpolate the missing frames accordingly. Though having achieved a great success, these methods require much human experience to tune the bidirectional flows and often generate unpleasant results when the estimated flows are not accurate. In this work, we rethink the VFI problem and formulate it as a continuous image transition (CIT) task, whose key issue is to transition an image from one space to another space continuously. More specifically, we learn to implicitly decouple the images into a translatable flow space and a non-translatable feature space. The former depicts the translatable states between the given images, while the later aims to reconstruct the intermediate features that cannot be directly translated. In this way, we can easily perform image interpolation in the flow space and intermediate image synthesis in the feature space, obtaining a CIT model. The proposed space decoupled learning (SDL) approach is simple to implement, while it provides an effective framework to a variety of CIT problems beyond VFI, such as style transfer and image morphing. Our extensive experiments on a variety of CIT tasks demonstrate the superiority of SDL to existing methods. The source code and models can be found at \url{https://github.com/yangxy/SDL}.

OTAvatar: One-shot Talking Face Avatar with Controllable Tri-plane Rendering

Zhiyuan Ma, Xiangyu Zhu, Guojun Qi et al.

Controllability, generalizability and efficiency are the major objectives of constructing face avatars represented by neural implicit field. However, existing methods have not managed to accommodate the three requirements simultaneously. They either focus on static portraits, restricting the representation ability to a specific subject, or suffer from substantial computational cost, limiting their flexibility. In this paper, we propose One-shot Talking face Avatar (OTAvatar), which constructs face avatars by a generalized controllable tri-plane rendering solution so that each personalized avatar can be constructed from only one portrait as the reference. Specifically, OTAvatar first inverts a portrait image to a motion-free identity code. Second, the identity code and a motion code are utilized to modulate an efficient CNN to generate a tri-plane formulated volume, which encodes the subject in the desired motion. Finally, volume rendering is employed to generate an image in any view. The core of our solution is a novel decoupling-by-inverting strategy that disentangles identity and motion in the latent code via optimization-based inversion. Benefiting from the efficient tri-plane representation, we achieve controllable rendering of generalized face avatar at $35$ FPS on A100. Experiments show promising performance of cross-identity reenactment on subjects out of the training set and better 3D consistency.

Benchmark Dataset and Effective Inter-Frame Alignment for Real-World Video Super-Resolution

Ruohao Wang, Xiaohui Liu, Zhilu Zhang et al.

Video super-resolution (VSR) aiming to reconstruct a high-resolution (HR) video from its low-resolution (LR) counterpart has made tremendous progress in recent years. However, it remains challenging to deploy existing VSR methods to real-world data with complex degradations. On the one hand, there are few well-aligned real-world VSR datasets, especially with large super-resolution scale factors, which limits the development of real-world VSR tasks. On the other hand, alignment algorithms in existing VSR methods perform poorly for real-world videos, leading to unsatisfactory results. As an attempt to address the aforementioned issues, we build a real-world 4 VSR dataset, namely MVSR4$\times$, where low- and high-resolution videos are captured with different focal length lenses of a smartphone, respectively. Moreover, we propose an effective alignment method for real-world VSR, namely EAVSR. EAVSR takes the proposed multi-layer adaptive spatial transform network (MultiAdaSTN) to refine the offsets provided by the pre-trained optical flow estimation network. Experimental results on RealVSR and MVSR4$\times$ datasets show the effectiveness and practicality of our method, and we achieve state-of-the-art performance in real-world VSR task. The dataset and code will be publicly available.

Spatial-Mamba: Effective Visual State Space Models via Structure-aware State Fusion

Chaodong Xiao, Minghan Li, Zhengqiang Zhang et al.

Selective state space models (SSMs), such as Mamba, highly excel at capturing long-range dependencies in 1D sequential data, while their applications to 2D vision tasks still face challenges. Current visual SSMs often convert images into 1D sequences and employ various scanning patterns to incorporate local spatial dependencies. However, these methods are limited in effectively capturing the complex image spatial structures and the increased computational cost caused by the lengthened scanning paths. To address these limitations, we propose Spatial-Mamba, a novel approach that establishes neighborhood connectivity directly in the state space. Instead of relying solely on sequential state transitions, we introduce a structure-aware state fusion equation, which leverages dilated convolutions to capture image spatial structural dependencies, significantly enhancing the flow of visual contextual information. Spatial-Mamba proceeds in three stages: initial state computation in a unidirectional scan, spatial context acquisition through structure-aware state fusion, and final state computation using the observation equation. Our theoretical analysis shows that Spatial-Mamba unifies the original Mamba and linear attention under the same matrix multiplication framework, providing a deeper understanding of our method. Experimental results demonstrate that Spatial-Mamba, even with a single scan, attains or surpasses the state-of-the-art SSM-based models in image classification, detection and segmentation. Spatial Feature Calibration and Temporal Fusion for Effective One-stage Video Instance Segmentation

Minghan Li, Shuai Li, Lida Li et al.

Modern one-stage video instance segmentation networks suffer from two limitations. First, convolutional features are neither aligned with anchor boxes nor with ground-truth bounding boxes, reducing the mask sensitivity to spatial location. Second, a video is directly divided into individual frames for frame-level instance segmentation, ignoring the temporal correlation between adjacent frames. To address these issues, we propose a simple yet effective one-stage video instance segmentation framework by spatial calibration and temporal fusion, namely STMask. To ensure spatial feature calibration with ground-truth bounding boxes, we first predict regressed bounding boxes around ground-truth bounding boxes, and extract features from them for frame-level instance segmentation. To further explore temporal correlation among video frames, we aggregate a temporal fusion module to infer instance masks from each frame to its adjacent frames, which helps our framework to handle challenging videos such as motion blur, partial occlusion and unusual object-to-camera poses. Experiments on the YouTube-VIS valid set show that the proposed STMask with ResNet-50/-101 backbone obtains 33.5 % / 36.8 % mask AP, while achieving 28.6 / 23.4 FPS on video instance segmentation. The code is released online https://github.com/MinghanLi/STMask.

Optical Flow Representation Alignment Mamba Diffusion Model for Medical Video Generation

Zhenbin Wang, Lei Zhang, Lituan Wang et al.

Medical video generation models are expected to have a profound impact on the healthcare industry, including but not limited to medical education and training, surgical planning, and simulation. Current video diffusion models typically build on image diffusion architecture by incorporating temporal operations (such as 3D convolution and temporal attention). Although this approach is effective, its oversimplification limits spatio-temporal performance and consumes substantial computational resources. To counter this, we propose Medical Simulation Video Generator (MedSora), which incorporates three key elements: i) a video diffusion framework integrates the advantages of attention and Mamba, balancing low computational load with high-quality video generation, ii) an optical flow representation alignment method that implicitly enhances attention to inter-frame pixels, and iii) a video variational autoencoder (VAE) with frequency compensation addresses the information loss of medical features that occurs when transforming pixel space into latent features and then back to pixel frames. Extensive experiments and applications demonstrate that MedSora exhibits superior visual quality in generating medical videos, outperforming the most advanced baseline methods. Ctrl123: Consistent Novel View Synthesis via Closed-Loop Transcription

Hongxiang Zhao, Xili Dai, Jianan Wang et al.

Large image diffusion models have demonstrated zero-shot capability in novel view synthesis (NVS). However, existing diffusion-based NVS methods struggle to generate novel views that are accurately consistent with the corresponding ground truth poses and appearances, even on the training set. This consequently limits the performance of downstream tasks, such as image-to-multiview generation and 3D reconstruction. We realize that such inconsistency is largely due to the fact that it is difficult to enforce accurate pose and appearance alignment directly in the diffusion training, as mostly done by existing methods such as Zero123. To remedy this problem, we propose Ctrl123, a closed-loop transcription-based NVS diffusion method that enforces alignment between the generated view and ground truth in a pose-sensitive feature space. Our extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of Ctrl123 on the tasks of NVS and 3D reconstruction, achieving significant improvements in both multiview-consistency and pose-consistency over existing methods.

RTR-GS: 3D Gaussian Splatting for Inverse Rendering with Radiance Transfer and Reflection

Yongyang Zhou, Fang-Lue Zhang, Zichen Wang et al.

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has demonstrated impressive capabilities in novel view synthesis. However, rendering reflective objects remains a significant challenge, particularly in inverse rendering and relighting. We introduce RTR-GS, a novel inverse rendering framework capable of robustly rendering objects with arbitrary reflectance properties, decomposing BRDF and lighting, and delivering credible relighting results. Given a collection of multi-view images, our method effectively recovers geometric structure through a hybrid rendering model that combines forward rendering for radiance transfer with deferred rendering for reflections. This approach successfully separates high-frequency and low-frequency appearances, mitigating floating artifacts caused by spherical harmonic overfitting when handling high-frequency details. We further refine BRDF and lighting decomposition using an additional physically-based deferred rendering branch. Experimental results show that our method enhances novel view synthesis, normal estimation, decomposition, and relighting while maintaining efficient training inference process.

Aug3D-RPN: Improving Monocular 3D Object Detection by Synthetic Images with Virtual Depth

Chenhang He, Jianqiang Huang, Xian-Sheng Hua et al.

Current geometry-based monocular 3D object detection models can efficiently detect objects by leveraging perspective geometry, but their performance is limited due to the absence of accurate depth information. Though this issue can be alleviated in a depth-based model where a depth estimation module is plugged to predict depth information before 3D box reasoning, the introduction of such module dramatically reduces the detection speed. Instead of training a costly depth estimator, we propose a rendering module to augment the training data by synthesizing images with virtual-depths. The rendering module takes as input the RGB image and its corresponding sparse depth image, outputs a variety of photo-realistic synthetic images, from which the detection model can learn more discriminative features to adapt to the depth changes of the objects. Besides, we introduce an auxiliary module to improve the detection model by jointly optimizing it through a depth estimation task. Both modules are working in the training time and no extra computation will be introduced to the detection model. Experiments show that by working with our proposed modules, a geometry-based model can represent the leading accuracy on the KITTI 3D detection benchmark.

S&CNet: Monocular Depth Completion for Autonomous Systems and 3D Reconstruction

Lei Zhang, Weihai Chen, Chao Hu et al.

Dense depth completion is essential for autonomous systems and 3D reconstruction. In this paper, a lightweight yet efficient network (S\&CNet) is proposed to obtain a good trade-off between efficiency and accuracy for the dense depth completion. A dual-stream attention module (S\&C enhancer) is introduced to measure both spatial-wise and the channel-wise global-range relationship of extracted features so as to improve the performance. A coarse-to-fine network is designed and the proposed S\&C enhancer is plugged into the coarse estimation network between its encoder and decoder network. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves competitive performance with existing works on KITTI dataset but almost four times faster. The proposed S\&C enhancer can be plugged into other existing works and boost their performance significantly with a negligible additional computational cost.
