A Concept-based Interpretable Model for the Diagnosis of Choroid Neoplasias using Multimodal DataYifan Wu, Yang Liu, Yue Yang et al.
Diagnosing rare diseases presents a common challenge in clinical practice, necessitating the expertise of specialists for accurate identification. The advent of machine learning offers a promising solution, while the development of such technologies is hindered by the scarcity of data on rare conditions and the demand for models that are both interpretable and trustworthy in a clinical context. Interpretable AI, with its capacity for human-readable outputs, can facilitate validation by clinicians and contribute to medical education. In the current work, we focus on choroid neoplasias, the most prevalent form of eye cancer in adults, albeit rare with 5.1 per million. We built the so-far largest dataset consisting of 750 patients, incorporating three distinct imaging modalities collected from 2004 to 2022. Our work introduces a concept-based interpretable model that distinguishes between three types of choroidal tumors, integrating insights from domain experts via radiological reports. Remarkably, this model not only achieves an F1 score of 0.91, rivaling that of black-box models, but also boosts the diagnostic accuracy of junior doctors by 42%. This study highlights the significant potential of interpretable machine learning in improving the diagnosis of rare diseases, laying a groundwork for future breakthroughs in medical AI that could tackle a wider array of complex health scenarios.

Musical Score Understanding Benchmark: Evaluating Large Language Models' Comprehension of Complete Musical ScoresCongren Dai, Yue Yang, Krinos Li et al.
Understanding complete musical scores entails integrated reasoning over pitch, rhythm, harmony, and large-scale structure, yet the ability of Large Language Models and Vision-Language Models to interpret full musical notation remains insufficiently examined. We introduce the Musical Score Understanding Benchmark (MSU-Bench), the first large-scale, human-curated benchmark for score-level musical understanding across textual (ABC notation) and visual (PDF) modalities. MSU-Bench contains 1,800 generative Question-Answering pairs from works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and others, organised into four levels of increasing difficulty, ranging from onset information to texture and form. Evaluations of more than fifteen state-of-the-art models, in both zero-shot and fine-tuned settings, reveal pronounced modality gaps, unstable level-wise performance, and challenges in maintaining multilevel correctness. Fine-tuning substantially improves results across modalities while preserving general knowledge, positioning MSU-Bench as a robust foundation for future research in multimodal reasoning. To facilitate further research, we publicly release MSU-Bench and all associated resources.

Real-time and Large-scale Fleet Allocation of Autonomous Taxis: A Case Study in New York Manhattan IslandYue Yang, Wencang Bao, Mohsen Ramezani et al.
Nowadays, autonomous taxis become a highly promising transportation mode, which helps relieve traffic congestion and avoid road accidents. However, it hinders the wide implementation of this service that traditional models fail to efficiently allocate the available fleet to deal with the imbalance of supply (autonomous taxis) and demand (trips), the poor cooperation of taxis, hardly satisfied resource constraints, and on-line platform's requirements. To figure out such urgent problems from a global and more farsighted view, we employ a Constrained Multi-agent Markov Decision Processes (CMMDP) to model fleet allocation decisions, which can be easily split into sub-problems formulated as a 'Dynamic assignment problem' combining both immediate rewards and future gains. We also leverage a Column Generation algorithm to guarantee the efficiency and optimality in a large scale. Through extensive experiments, the proposed approach not only achieves remarkable improvements over the state-of-the-art benchmarks in terms of the individual's efficiency (arriving at 12.40%, 6.54% rise of income and utilization, respectively) and the platform's profit (reaching 4.59% promotion) but also reveals a time-varying fleet adjustment policy to minimize the operation cost of the platform.
